Hits like that happen in the NHL all the time, yeah they do. But they are called, and either result in a major penalty or at least a minor, especially when it happens right in front of the farking net with the ref looking right at him. Good for gretzky showing some ballz and calling it like it was: a cowardly hit. Also, Roy was asked and he said no, he wanted to play for the avalanche because they're in trouble. I hope Canada gets another crack at the czechs.

Go Canada Go!

If you think Canada winning is a foregone conclusion you need to think again. Why didn't they win in 98? They had the same status of the best team.

The reason - Canada is the best team, but the others in the big 6 (US, Russia, Czech Rep, Finland, Sweden) are close behind. If Canada played 100 games against those teams, they'd probably win 65. But in this format, they only have to lose one to be out of it. And on any given day, any of those 5 teams (3 of which Canada will have to beat to win gold) can beat them.

Is Canada more likely to win gold than any other team? Yes.

Is Canada a sure thing? Far from it.

So this hockey sport thing is actually a big deal in Canadia?? I don't understand it, I can't tell which one is the quarterback or which one is the shortstop. As far as I can tell, they don't use a ball at all. Did we win the Olympics yet?

Stop picking all the farking "stars" and pick a farking team.

Sweden kicked Canada's arse because they had a team. Germany gave Canada a ride because they were playing as a team...see a trend? The Czech's did, and they almost won that game.

Too many farking Captains on that team. You pick the best TEAM, not the best players.

Where are: Vincent Damphousse, Alex Tanguay, Jason Allison, Joe Thorton, John Madden, Jon Klemm, Jose Theodore, Todd Bertuzzi, Brendan Witt and Scotty Bowman?

They may not be "stars" but they'll win you farking games by playing as a team and being hungry.

Eric Lindros and Pat Quinn have no business being there.

Canada's going to go down in a blaze of finger pointing and accusations and until somebody has the cojones to stand up and toss aside the political b.s. and public sentiment and pick a farking TEAM. Otherwise, it's gonna be another 50 years.

Smoother101,

I didn't mean to offend any of your mullett wearing countrymen. I would be a little upset too if my national team had not won the gold medal in our national sport for over 50 years. I would also be a little upset if I was from Canada....a pathetic excuse for a country.

God bless the USA....ruler of the world.

Cdawg, you're a dork. Write again when you have something interesting to say. Otherwise, go find a thread with Fb- and WorldCitizen; I'm sure they'll be more than happy to respond to your senseless drivel.

Gma - I agree about cherrypicking not being a good thing, but it seems to me that the two-line rule allows the defensemen to play at their opponent's blue line. If they had to guard against the cherrypicking breakaway, they'd have to play further back which would make the offense more interesting. Just my humbly ignorant opinion.

I say fUk commercials, the shorter time between the whistle and puck drop is a good thing. Let the sponsors put an add on the side of the zambonie, we want to watch hockey.

Der_Jackal - well said; Alex Tanguay should be captain.

GO USA!!

there's a reason he has been known as Whine Gretzky for 25 years. Canada got hammered by Sweden cuz Sweden played better. end of story. yesterday was the first decent game these guys played.

Fleury is a little rat-bastard, players are encouraed to hurt him. much like Jammy Jagr.

Go Canada Go!

Actually, it's Dave Semenko and Dave Lumley.

McSorley is Dave Semenko's Biatch.

Canada is starting to gel and on Wednesday they are going to kick some Finnish a s s. It was just a matter of time until they got used to the different game and the different rules and we are going to see a much better team in the next game. They are hungry now and their confidence is much better. But I do agree, Lindros is a friggin Mary for sure. Thornton would have been a much better choice.

No advertising = no hockey on tv.

As far as defensemen playing farther back... if you play behind your opponent's blue line, you're out of the offense, as soon as you get the puck your whole team has to come back out and reset to avoid the offsides (and if you think offsides needs to go, you're completely missing the beauty of hockey).

2002-02-19 01:14:18 PM
Gma, good point about clearing the zone - I don't know what I was thinking. Of course offsides is a good rule.

I think they should nationalize the tv stations and the government should run them. Then we wouldn't need commercials and we'd be able to watch the whole game interrupted...oh wait, then I'd be a socialist. Nevermind.

Still, it seems like there's enough time for commercials with two, fifteen minute intermissions.

2002-02-19 01:17:09 PM
I feel that this is some of the best hockey I've ever seen. It's really anybody's tournament.

2002-02-19 01:18:14 PM
Gorange: As a Devil's fan since they moved here from Colorado, I'll never forgive Greztky for that comment.

So the Great One gets no love here. Got a problem with lack of respect? Solve it on the ice. They'll get their chance against Finland. If they lose, I don't want to hear from that mullet headed jerkoff again.

And to think I was rooting for those guys (Brodeur being the reason) yesterday.

2002-02-19 01:21:34 PM
Question fro you farkers-

Why was there a preliminary round for Germany and Belarus to qualify to go into the groups the Big 6 are in? Isn't that a little unfair to have 8 teams vie for 2 spots, while the other 6 teams automatically get to go into the next round? I'm not complaining. I'm all for unfair playoff formats, but my question is why do they do it that way?

2002-02-19 01:35:38 PM
Greatness on the ice apparently does not translate to intelligence off of it.

All of the news stories about Canadian team problems and unrest have come from Canadian sources.

Shaddup and play Wayne. You look pretty stoopid with that hockey stick hanging outa yer shorts.

2002-02-19 01:41:48 PM
let's not pass judgement until the gold medal game has been played and the winner known. the prelim round is just for seeding, remember, and the canadians could well stand up under the pressure of the elimination round. just because the US has their pretty boys shoot from everywhere and take advantage of the shiatty belarus team doesn't mean it'll be the sequel to the miracle on ice this year. let's wait and see who the real pussies are.

Advertisers don't want the ad space in intermission - people channel surf. They want midgame spots where people are glued to the TV. You can run 15 minutes of nonstop commercials during intermission, but nobody'd pay more than $1.50 for a 30 second spot about 10 minutes in.

2002-02-19 01:43:30 PM
Perhaps, if he'd been a bit savvier, he would've named Canada's best active goaltender, Patrick Roy, to his original eight selections, instead of irritating Roy by snubbing him and creating a difficult situation.

I like this part. Patty has a big head as well. You know Roy has been playing his best hockey right now, just to spite Wayne.

2002-02-19 01:52:42 PM
I think the initial seeding (putting the big 6 in the 2nd round automatically) comes from recent performance in the World Championships? Although I wouldn't be surprised if there was some NHL influence in getting it set up this way, because it had to take some bargaining to get them to give up valuable time and risk injury to their stars.

2002-02-19 01:55:54 PM
Sweden is going to crush Team Canada. Their PP sucks, Brodeur is always out of position, and a doped up Lemuex can only play that good for so long.

Too many chiefs, not enough indians!!

2002-02-19 01:57:43 PM
My biggest complaint is that that NBC has so much pull on when the games are being played. Before the final preliminary round standings were decided yesterday (every position except Belarus, Germany and Sweden was undecided), they posted the match-ups and times for the quarterfinals and semifinals (with place holders like C1 vs D4). Well, wouldn't you know it, when the US ended up getting the #1 spot because Russia lost to Finland, they suddenly made a couple of switches to the game times. All of a sudden, instead of the US playing at 1:00pm on Wednesday, they are suddenly playing at 6:00pm. And if they win that game, they are guaranteed to play at 6:00pm instead of 2:00pm on Friday. If they had left the game time/matchups the same as at the start of the tournament, the US would have had ZERO medal round games in prime time.

Can't let that happen! I complain (as we Canadians are wont to do) because if Canada beats Finland, our semi-final game against Sweden is on at 2pm on Friday. Farking NBC!

Canada where they eat sleep and breathe Hockey (and Beer)from about 2 years old until they die. You'd think they'd be a shoe-in for the Gold. Then they start whining. Guess they think whinning will get them the Gold. Like those ice skaters.

Meanwhile in this country. Loser inner city punks eat sleep and breathe Basketball (and pot and cocaine and Magnum 40's) and kick ass in the Olympics.

(I still hate Basketball, and love Canada though)

SLAYERSWINE;

*ROFLMAO* Yeah, he'd be hopped up on Nyquil and then pitching a biatch about gettin' no love, then'd he just decide to leave for a few days w/o telling anybody.

He's the prima of prima-donna's. More of an ego than Patty Roy, Ken Dryden, Wayne Gretzky, Eric Lindros and Chris Pronger combined...

WTF, More whiney canadians, guess when they loose the olympic commitee will give them another gold medal to shut them the fuk up.

2002-02-19 02:57:39 PM
i watched the game- you practically had to eviscerate someone to get a penalty- and that applied to both teams. I say we give them both the gold.

Sorry... had to.

You are a stinky puss CaptMorgan. No one heard the US crying 4 years ago when they lost 3 of 4 games in Hockey. Why would any other country cheer for Canada's hockey team, if their country was in contention for the gold. Gretz-SHUT UP!

2002-02-19 03:27:38 PM
I can understand Gretzky being a little pussy since he's 5-10, 160 pounds soaking wet. But Lemieux is a TOTAL PUSSY. 6-4, 230 pounds, he should destroy the opposition. He's got all that size and he plays a wimpy finesse game. Screw him.

I think we could all take a lesson from Dale Hunter. He was 5-10, scored a bunch, was a great team player, and still beat everyone up. Dale Hunter's a poor man's Gordie Howe, but that's saying a lot.

2002-02-19 03:53:05 PM
Too bad when the Canadian Hockey team gets less than a Gold Medal or no medal, that they won't have a French judge to blame it all on this time around. Maybe they'll blame it on a conspiracy between their hockey sticks, the puck, the net, and the boards.

2002-02-19 03:59:06 PM
I think Team Canada is suffering the underestimation blues now... Sure they'll get back.

The hockey tournament is just sooooo great. My only complaint is that the matches are in the middle of the farking night. Our (Sweden's) game was on at 3 am this morning.

/me is sleepy at work

Heja Sverige!

2002-02-19 04:05:30 PM
If you want to know exactly what the Great One was up to yesterday, all you have to do is watch SlapShot for the scene where Reg (Paul Newman) tells his opponent that his contract was dropped. Dave "Killer" Carlson goes nuts and goons the guy. So Reg turns it around and goes ballistic in the dressing room, claiming the other team jumped Dave and THEY were a bunch of goons.

Gretzky is making his team believe that the world is out to beat them down. So now they will be on a real mission to show how good they are, blah blah blah. Basic coach psychology shiat... Mark my words, they will come out firing bullets on Wednesday. And dear God, I hope they get to play the Czechs again!!!

2002-02-19 04:14:18 PM
The seedings of 1-6 were determined by the World Championships. Still the NHL selectively enforced the rules that didn't allow many Slovakians from playing with their national team.

In 2006, don't expect to see the NHLers back on the ice.

2002-02-19 04:56:43 PM
Der_jackal,
He is on Canada's roster, right?
I thought he was with Cujo & Brodeur.
Am I wrong ?

2002-02-19 05:09:58 PM
SLAYERSWINE,

He's about as much on the roster as being "named" to it. He's the #3, and not even expected to see the inside of the dressing room, much less the ice.

It was a bone thrown out to appease the masses again.

Why don't you guys actually read or listen to what Gretzky actually said. He never blames US propaganda for team Canada playing like crap, he's only pissed off about what some people in the American media have said about team Canada. He's not here (in Canada) so he's not aware of all the crap the Canadian media is saying about team Canada. Gretzky is a proud Canadian and he is simply defending our game from the degrading remarks made about it by European and American sources (mainly American sources). No one makes fun of the American style of hockey because they play the Canadian style, they always have and they always will because it's the best style. Plus, I don't think Grez was quite as serious as people think he was. He was simply tring to create the "its us vs the world" view for the players in order to fire them up.
