The decreasing popularity of American brands can be explained with growing anti-American sentiments in Europe, presumably caused with the US foreign policy.

RTFA before opening your trap.

Cult American brands such as Marlboro, Coca-Cola, MsDonald's, Ford and others are currently experiencing a decline on the European market, particularly in Germany in France.

Germany is in France!?!?

Ahhh...the first signs of the death of globalization (which died on September 11, 2001) are beginning to be seen. Eventually GATT and WTO will wither and die as regional trade blocs develop and countries retrench.

The whole brand name load of crap pisses me off.
Around Michigan we have a soda company called Faygo that has more flavors and charges 80c for a 20oz compared to around 1.30 for the brand names. It's all just carbonated sugar water yet people are more than willing to spend more for a different label on the front.

a friend of mine went to ireland recently, and told me when they visited an irish pub, everyone was drinking coors light.

Jebus. Talk about people who don't know how good they have it at home. Are you sure they weren't just using the Coors to rinse out the glasses at the bar?

Your 'London' picture features 8 corpoaret logos. Only three of those companies are American. (Coke, Burger King and McDonalds). The rest are Japanese, Korean, Belgian and German companies.

Ford produces "Ford" branded cars in Europe.
GM produces "Opel" branded cars in Europe.
DaimlerChrysler produces some (very few) "Chrysler" branded cars, along with Mercedes-Benz and Smart cars.

While in Europe-

Go to any decent-sized city and try not to find a Marriott, Sheraton, Hilton, etc.

Then walk by a local movie theater and look at the posters.

After that, go to a bar/club and listen to the music, and look at what (at least some) folks are drinking.

/hilarious.

I believe Russia is a bigger exporter of death than the US.

What is the weapon of choice in 3rd world countries.

The M-16? Then of course you could discuss Chechnya, but this is Prada so really you can't.

Companies rise and fall. So do sales.

Making spurious connections of the new buzz word "anti-Americanism" with allegedly slumping sales of three or four US based companies is a stretch.

Shoot, I don't buy American stuff (mostly) and neither does anyone else. Food is grown in Mexico, everything else is made in China except for autos, and I bought a Toyota 7 years ago so I won't need another car for another 7 years.

America doesn't manufacture anything anymore. It's part of how we're more secure

Just curious, do you think the Brits make their own plastic toys or grow all of the food they consume? How about the Swedes or Fins? The Dutch?

Nope, it isn't just America that has moved manufacturing, it is the whole industrialized (post industrialized?) world that has.

Yep. But the unfortunate part of your logic is that most ak-47's aren't manufactured in the "soviet union". China is the biggest exporter of ak-47's.

Ain't nothing wrong with any of that. Texas is a rocking state. I've been there many times, America and Americans are some of the nicest, kindest fun shiats I've ever met in my life. Its the whole Darth vader and Grand Moff Cheney turning your country into a warmongering totalitarian police state that sucks.

Bottom line, death is not a purly American product. Not even recently. Its just much cooler to point out when the US kills.

2004-10-28 03:54:34 PM
Speaking as a european: That is BullSheat.

European consumers are driven by the same thing as you yanks when we go shopping, greed... I spend my money on the products that gives me the most for my buck in relationship to the cost.

But some things makes me wonder: What the hell is sweet potatoes, and how is it differnt from ordinary potatoes?
Root beer? Never seen it anywhere here in Sweden.
Oreos? (sp?) some sort of cookies?

These are products I've never seen here in Sweden even though I hear about them all the time in american movies and tv shows.

2004-10-28 03:55:10 PM
hhmmmmm

most americans avoid huge crappy brands too....

does this mean i should be shocked when europeans avoid it?

actually im kinda surprised. most europeans look like they bought theyre clothes at mcdonalds while smoking horrible cigarettes from cocacola.

/not shocked
/doesnt care

That I agree with. :)

In Russia, McDonald's is a classy place. You go there because you are sick of pelmini and borsch and see business men with their briefcases open discussing company issues as they eat their fries. Ketchup PACKETS cost seven rubles each ($.25) while the entire meal is like 90 rubles ($3.25). Cigarettes, on the other hand, are usually like fifty cents a pack and people don't even bother finishing them. They will see their bus coming, light up, take one drag, and then toss it on the ground when they get on the bus.

I doubt there is little political connection. The overwhelming feeling I get from those in Russia and Europe that I speak with don't give a rats ass about America. Asking a Russian what they think about Bush, you get the same response as if you ask an American what they think of Putin. Most people just don't care.

But you can't escape America. The first thing I heard when I stepped into the Moscow airport was Britney Spears on VH1. Sweden, Finland, Latvia, Estonia, Czech Republic... all likewise.

Don't put Ireland and the UK in there with the rest of Europe, we love American stuff, infact if the germans and french don't like American products ship them our way, we'll buy it, we've got an obesity epidemic to maintain.

And in other news, nobody in America gives a fark.

Did you RTA? Thats a lot of money. You cannot tell me that doesnt hurt. And yes, a lot of people "give a fark" because some of us like to travel. I know you are happy sitting in Oklahoma having sex with your sister, but I prefer swedish women over family members every day.

Dear world: We are sorry for the inbreds, we hate them here too.

That's hillarious. I laughed at that image endlessly when I was in Cairo too... There's a reason they only take pictures of the pyramids and sphinx from one direction.

Sweet potatoes are also known as "yams." They are tubers with orange insides, as opposed to potatoes, which have white insides. Very popular for making sweet dessert-like casseroles.
