God what an idiot...that excuse is similar to the Bush administration claiming that drugs from Canada aren't being nationally endorsed only for our "safety"...

I don't know how anyone can support either of the candidates in this election to the point of putting up signs on your lawn or bumper stickes on your car.

1 Flame War coming up.

I live in South Florida, which is mostly democratic. I was in east Boca Raton today right by the GOP volunteer office, which you can imagine was literally surrounded for blocks with Bush/Cheney signs everywhere. There was one Kerry sign in the middle of the street, and I saw one of the volunteers put a republican sign in front AND back of the one Kerry sign on the whole street so no one could see it. What a scumbag.

I've also seen many Kerry/Edwards signs and stickers defaced, such as being splattered with paint or damaged to the point where it's completely impossible to read them.

Flame on.

Here's the article:

Woman accused of stealing Bush signs says it's not political
an ABC Action News report 10/25/04

CLEARWATER - A Clearwater woman is accused of stealing her neighbor's political signs after a homemade sting.

Homeowner Michael Pinson set up a hidden camera to catch the culprit after several of his Bush and Cheney election signs disappeared from his yard. Sunday afternoon, the camera caught his neighbor taking a sign and then tearing it up.

ABC Action News confronted the woman in the video, who said that the snatched signs had nothing to do with politics.

"I am trying to help him alleviate a $50-a-day fine, which is what they charge you in this homeowners association," explained Nancy Rapp.

Pinson has filed a complaint with police claiming his neighbor is trying to stifle his freedom of speech.

I don't doubt that her motivations were purely altruistic.

And no doubt, she tore up the sign to make sure he wouldn't make the same mistake again.

2004-10-26 09:10:07 PM
Nothing is as funny as after watching the debates and seeing people trying to block a Bush or Kerry sign with their own...it cracked me up every time.

2004-10-26 09:14:25 PM
I was going to vote for Kerry, but then I drove by a sign in some guy's yard, and he had placed his Bush/Cheney sign just so perfectly that I couldn't help but change my mind.

Wonder what kind of fine can she get for "destruction of personal property", and possibly (the article didn't say) littering?

2004-10-26 09:18:21 PM
It's good she stole the signs and then lied about it...

...because you know we all have to do our part to stop the stifling of free speech and lack of integrity.

My favorite sign defacement, here in Denver, was the swastika painted over a Coors sign.

/pete coors is running for offfice here
//yes that coors

2004-10-26 09:25:05 PM
I HATE the "for your own good" arguement. If a guy was willing to pay the 50 dollar a day fine, she had no right to come onto his land and take his private property. Maybe a week or two in jail will make her think twice about destruction of private property again.

That's just silly. I would have painted Fat Tire over it.

sneaky biatch

2004-10-26 09:29:02 PM
Not only that, but it's obvious that the excuse is a lie. If she bothered to tear it up, rather than just trashing it, I think it's a very safe bet she's anti-bush.

As someone who doesn't like Bush, I would rather see one of his fans pay loads of money to keep up a sign than to exert that absolutely miniscule amount of influence over others. I mean really, what are the odds that a sign in your yard on a national election will saw even one vote? One in a billion?

2004-10-26 09:30:29 PM
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale...

2004-10-26 09:31:13 PM
Bah, I meant "and exert that absolutely..." in that sentence. If they're willing to pay $50 to try to buy votes then fine.

2004-10-26 09:35:34 PM
Orlando: On my way to work, I saw a huge (5' x 8', approximately) Kerry and Edwards "A Stronger America" sign that had been defaced. Some Bushiate had spray painted "FAG" in letters as big as the sign, and "Go Bush" down the right side. I wish I had called the news because it occurred to me the next day that it was right across the street from Kaley Elementary. Moran.

2004-10-26 09:36:21 PM
Culkhambladulahn but he said Coors is running in Denver, and Fat Tire is based out of Colorado (Fort Collins). Sierra Nevada is based out of California...

2004-10-26 09:37:00 PM
I'd hope they're less than one in a billion, Sidi - if that's true then, assuming a population of 300 million or so, every 3rd or 4th campaign sign in a yard will change a vote. Let's hope it's something like one in a quadrillion.

Sidi:

I know, just commenting on what is going down my throat pretty smoothly at this point of the evening.

I had a John Kerry sign taped to my door about a month ago. Someone stole it within a week. I put up a new one yesterday, and I wrote "Only Fascists steal campaign signs." on the back of it.

2004-10-26 09:50:44 PM
my two dirty pennies:

1. she was stealing signs
2. if she was so concerned about his pocket book, she would have told him face to face, and maybe found a different method for him to display it, i.e. in his front window or something.
3. i am kerry supporter, but i would fight to support your right to support whomever you wish.
4. saying that, my wife wants us to start yanking bush/cheney campaign signs.
5. so if you are missing any signs in va beach area, blame my wife.

I had a campaign sign for a Libertarian candidate stolen from my yard three times a few years ago before I gave up. Libertarians don't have the funds to continually replace signs. :p

2004-10-26 09:52:46 PM
What an incredibly unnewsworthy story! The only good thing about it is that we'll have the pleasure of hearing Republicans say "A Democrat stole a Bush campaign sign! That's proof that Kerry's unfit to command!" for the next 18 hours in this thread.

I'm busy rereading Paul Johnson's excellent "History of America" and boy, today's campaign low blows are NUTHIN' compared to what was going on in this country 150 years ago. The only difference is that when people came to blows over John Tyler or James Polk, it really was inconsequential, unlike this election which truly will have wide and long-lasting repercussions.

In case she, or people who do the same thing, or think its a good idea ...

*Ahem*

Liar.

If your neighborhood assn won't let you put up a sign to support a candidate of your choosing, you can sue them. The US Constitution has the 1st ammendment, and that trumps any other laws in the land. So this woman has no reason to steal signs.

I'd kick her in the box, then shove her.

I'm the president of my HOA (boo bird line starts to the right), and I think this is Fark'd up, no matter who his signs are for.

I'd be one thing if she knocked on his door, and said, 'hey, you're gonna get fined', being a nice neighbor. Instead, she takes them down and rips them up?

Yeah, like I really believe she was doing this for his own good.

Let him live with the consequences, if that was really her intention. Somehow, I doubt his HOA carried, if they hadn't said anything to him yet. (And frankly, as others pointed out, he probably didn't care about the fine either).

That's why I joined my HOA...it was a farking joke, and someone had to set them straight (3 of us joined up at the latest elections to stop stupid crap like this, and form a nice little voting bloc)
