I like the SI headline better: "Skate America ends when Russian falls on head."

2004-10-24 03:59:46 PM
Damn.. when am I gonna get my turn to hit it???

Owww.... :-/

This is why Figure Skating is a "sport" and not a "game" even though the men dress like effeminate pirates. Ice is dangerous stuff.

Oops! This isn't the Paris Hilton thread!!

Being a licensed first aider, I would recomend putting ice on it.

Again.

2004-10-24 04:02:30 PM
And I thought only skateboarders had to worry about faceplanting on a rock hard surface.

Now that I consider it, figure skating and skateboarding have a lot in common...

2004-10-24 04:02:56 PM
I think i'd recommend a cervical collar and a spineboard, but that's just me...

No comment from Fidel Castro.

Mmmm...gaudy figure skating outfits...when are we gonna have another Boobies link?

2004-10-24 04:08:41 PM
Thats just awful. Poor thing. I can't even make a joke about it.

But I can point out a much funnier skating maneuver called the Bucktoothed Right Forward Single Nippleslip.
NOT Safe For Work

/I hope she's okay

2004-10-24 04:09:01 PM
I was a figure skater way back when, and the thought of this happening to me is what kept me away from pairs. These men tend to be pretty big, 6 feet tall or thereabouts, plus their armspan, and they're holding you up by one hand turning. No thanks, I have no desire to bounce off ice.

2004-10-24 04:13:34 PM
Double lutz? Sounds like single Klutz to me. OW.

2004-10-24 04:13:50 PM
dayum, Imbri
if you still were a figure skater I might not be so quick to skip over skating every time it comes on tv.

BearToy
Not so much bucktoothed as possessed of an enormous gap. But hey, I did ask for boobies, and got them. I guess I have to grudgingly thank you for that.

2004-10-24 04:15:20 PM
I'm sorry I called you a gap-toothed ho. It's not your fault you so gap-toothed.

2004-10-24 04:15:47 PM
Game over. Lovesandwich wins.

2004-10-24 04:16:27 PM
That Fark headline is wayyyyy more funny than the pic in the article. Yeesh, a heap of sequins on the ice, that is not pretty.

Straight From ATL
Thanks. Honestly, these days I skip over skating a lot myself unless there's someone in a skimpy dress who happens to be of legal age. Seems the young ones are taking over though.

As for the NSFW pic above, that happens all the time. Thank goodness for double sided tape.

2004-10-24 04:28:13 PM
No video?

2004-10-24 04:29:18 PM
Double sided tape, Imbri?

Jesus. I can almost smell the pain of that. Turn too fast and your nipple will be ripped off.

2004-10-24 04:35:15 PM
Yeah, the tape can hurt, but it's better than flashing an arena full of people.

Skaters are taught not to stop unless they're at risk of getting hurt, from a lace loose or something. I remember one competition a friend of mine fell out of her top about 30 seconds into a 4 minute program and skated the rest of it with everything hanging out. She got one heck of a round of applause.

She beat me, too.

2004-10-24 04:36:32 PM
'At's gonna leave a mark!

But seriously, that head position on the female skater looks a bit, um, wrong. Hate to see stuff like that. Reminds me of that gymnast from, was it China, during warm-ups at the Atlanta Olympics.

Any woman willing to be hoisted eight feet above ICE has my respect! She's far braver than I!

I second that! Imbri is a hottie.

Anyone else notice the lightish brown presence that seems to be hovering over the skater? Maybe it's just the pic.

Weaklingrecords
Aww shucks, thanks.

thunder
Now that you've mentioned it I see something, it's probably just something on the ice or the camera.

2004-10-24 04:55:13 PM
Skateboarders wear pads and helmets.
Hockey players wear pads and helmets.

If figure-skaters started wearing pads and helmets, they could probably get away with trying riskier moves.

2004-10-24 04:59:54 PM
i have a ton of gruesome skating stories. I also was a competitive figure skater for a long time. this poor pair was first after short, too. bummer.

imbri what level did you get up to?

And because they're russian, they still won the Gold medal

/still miffed about the olympics!

bluesxgirl

I was nationally competitive here in Canada, then I ended up married and pregnant in no particular order. I was skating senior level. And yourself?

2004-10-24 05:14:09 PM
imbri congratulations! it's quite an accomplishment to get so far. I was intermediate, about to test to junior (usfsa) when i quit cos i was 16 and fed up with being told i was too tall all the time. (i'm 5'10", don't know how i ended up that far to begin with. skating is not for the tall girls). i was always more into ice dancing anyway, i was silver/pre-gold level there, and if i could have found a partner tall enough i probably would have gotten further. but i just didn't have the drive. i would coach, but where i live now there's no ice rink.

always neat to find a fellow figure skater :)

2004-10-24 05:22:37 PM
Thanks. I liked dance too, I have no idea how the US/Canada levels compare but I had my gold test, working on my diamonds when I quit, so I was doing Yankee Polka and Rhumba and such.

I coached for a couple years, all little kids, but my kids got to be too much responsibility and I haven't done it for about 3 years now. Maybe one day...

2004-10-24 05:27:38 PM
Faceplant, huh? I expected a picture of some skater with his face planted in some girl's crotch. That's the usual kind of skating faceplant picture you see.

2004-10-24 05:31:17 PM
They actually were in the lead and were the last skaters on the ice. I've seen lots of posts elsewhere from people at Skate America who were all absolutely freaked out by how violently the girl hit...because of the way the lift was done, she had no chance to get her hands out and literally went in headfirst. Her partner was going to check on her but there were dozens of people yelling at him not to touch her. The medics put her in the cervical collar and strapped her to a backboard, and she ended up in a Level 1 trauma center. I'm sure most people guessed she'd have a broken neck, but so far, it seems like she's OK. At least, relatively speaking.

2004-10-24 05:41:31 PM
I teach skating now, as I gave it up last past season because of financial issues. I competed up to Junior, and made nationals internationals and such. Anyways, you kinda have to imagine that any sport has a large ammount of risk in it. I mean sure the falls on these lifts happens when your learning um nut even like the jumps they become kinda like a second nature to you and the risk gets minimized greatly, but its like a freak accident, almost like a pitcher in baseball getting hit by a line drive. Anyways it sucks she got hurt and all but it happens, such is the risk of world class and/or professional sports.

2.4 musta been from the russian judge! Although they arent very good russian judge if there skater bombs and only give 2.4... a good cheating russian judge still throws in the 5.9 =P

I bet the estate of Christopher Reeve is calling her family right now with a sweet deal on complete set of used quadriplegic medical equipment.

Anybody that thinks this is funny is the worst kind of asshat.

These kids had hopes and dreams and now one of them is in the hospital.

They got my sympathy.

She'll be OK and had been released from the hospital with a concussion & broken ribs:

That was speedy indeed, resume comedy now. :)
