Will it once again be as useless and ineffective to the Ethiopians it purported to help then as it will be today?

I blame Gaylord Perry for this...

What? No Blue Oyster Cult?

It just isn't Christmas without more cowbell!

The cover of this song by Barenaked Ladies, Guster, and Dido, was very good.

/dasWiggy sings the old IRY theme song...

"We arm the world!
We arm the children!
We arm the ones who make the evening news,
So let's start killing!
There's a choice we're making,
to arm Iranians!
It's true, we'll make a bloody world,
Just you and MEEEEEE!!!!"

Why? Please spare us the agony of hearing that lame song over and over again.

I don't mean to sound "out of it" but the first recording had some huge names on it.
Who are these new people?

Lunchbox-eB, well done! He was fantastic on Letterman last night.

World On Fire is the new Band Aid record. -- Watch the video, then read what they spent the money on instead of filming a slick music video

Will Bono say "1, 2, 3, 14" in this song too?

liverleef - It warms my heart when a group of self-rightous, egocentric rock stars with millions of dollars sing songs about how middle class folk should be more charitable.

exactly like that crappy post-9/11 concert. Not one 'artist' donated any money. Funnily enough Rosie O' Donell was asked to host it and she said she would only do it if everyone coughed up $1M. Nobody dipped their hand in their pocket so she told them to fark themselves and then donated $2M anyway...

Weird, it previewed OK then tossed the pic. :^(

It was the SNL guys... "I wish it was Christmast today... I wish it was Christmas todayyy...."

Original song sucked a$$. The remake will be even worse. Don't these "stars" have enough money already? How much will actually go to charity? This whole concept really pi$$es me off.

2004-10-20 08:39:52 PM
Of course, thanks to Politcal Correctness and faux-cultural-sensitivity (both which have been displayed in surprising amounts in this thread. No wait, not "surprising", the other thing. "Predicable".) the song will have to be re-titled and rewritten as "Do They Know it's Hannukah/Ramadan/Kwanzaa/Christmas/Tet/Winter Solstice/Startica/December 25th/any-and-all-other-seasonal-religious-or-cultural-observations-(regardless - of-governmental-or-societal-sanction)-which-have-been-omitted-not-because-of-b ias-or-perceived-value-but-simply-to-save-space-on-the-CD At All?" Which will result in a much longer, much more lyrically-stilted song. And is that what we all really want? Really?

Hey, who remembers "Hands Across America"?

What is wrong with you people? Giving toys to sick kids as organized by Penny Arcade ppl is great, super, etc, but someone trying to raise money to get food to hungry kids is stupid? I am all for Child's Play, but I thought anyone agreeing a kid needs to play would surely agree a kid needs three meals a day, too. And if this atrocious song can help to raise the money to get them, I'm all for it.

davel23: You nailed it with the PC aspect.

/still laughing at "Hannukah/Ramadan/Kwanzaa...

On the one hand, it's great that they'll never have to remake "(I ain't gonna play) Sun City." On the other hand, damn it was a good piece of music compared to this schlock.

What's with all these 80's remakes? Are the people who grew up during the 80's already getting nostalgic?

2004-10-20 09:12:20 PM
Omis: What up. The 80's sucked.

2004-10-20 09:13:53 PM
Are the people who grew up during the 80's already getting nostalgic?

Nothing unusual, based on the nostalgia waves of previous decades it appears to be right on time.

A little off-topic: At least it's not that Michael Jackson "We Are the World." There's not a single line in that song that makes any sense. But everyone just sang along like a bunch of fools.

Example: "As God has shown us, by turning stone to bread.." (FACT: Jesus, not God, was tempted by Satan to do so and refused)
Example: "It's a choice we're making, we're saving our own lives..." (FACT: What choice? Your lives are already saved, right? You're saving someone else's lives)

And so on. And the embarassment of everyone singing along to "we are the children" with Jacko. Yuck.

/I would like to see that Live Aid performance by Bob Dylan, Keith Richards and Ron Wood again, if anybody has a link. I read they were having a pretty high ol' time backstage right before that.

There was once this brilliant advert on UK TV:

"In 1984, group Black lace released the song Agadoo, which went straight to number 2 in the charts. Then, in 1998, it was re-released and once again entered the top ten.

Recycling rubbish WORKS."

again, business as usual on fark.com, a few human, intelligent remarks among the "oh, i'm oh so witty and let me show the world" quips. hey, it's to make money for those who really need the help. that's funny?

2004-10-20 09:34:02 PM
If anyone can post a link to a page that lists who sings what lyric at what time in the original "Do They Know," please post it, and you'll get a cookie.

Thanks.

Strangely, the only U2 joke I know involves "Do They Know it's Christmas"

You even indicate you know what the comments will be like, so why bother? Did you expect everyone here to pat them on the back and gush over how the children are the future and caring popstars deserve our respect? You came to the wrong place, and you seem to know it. So what's the problem?

Erm.

I have no idea what this is.

We're Sending Our Love Down The Well

Sung by: Troy McClure, Scott Christian, The Channel 6 weather girl (Kent Brockman's girlfriend), Bleeding Gums Murphy, Diamond Joe Quimby, Krusty the Klown, Princess Cashmere, Sting, Sideshow Mel, Rainier Wolfcastle (McBain), Dr. Marvin Monroe, Captain Lance Murdoch, The Capital City Goofball, and an unknown man

Sting:
There's a hole in my heart
As deep as a well
For that poor little boy,
Who's stuck halfway to hell...

Sideshow Mel:
Though we can't get him out,
We'll do the next best thing...

McBain:
We go on TV
And sing, sing, sing!

All:
And we're sending our love down the well...
Krusty:
All the way down!
All:
We're sending our love down the well...
Krusty:
Down that well

Midge Ure was in Visage who did one of my favorite 80s tunes "Fade to Grey".

A rehash of DTKIC might work, but would doubtfully be as good as the original...where my favorite line sung by Sting was "the bitter sting of tears".
HAH!

First off, Bob Geldof and anything he does sucks. As some of you may know, He was once married to that lady that would have been Michael Hutchence's (Lead singer of INXS)wife. But, Michael killed himself (supposedly) because of the custody of the lady's daughter (who michael adopted)...Bob geldof was being a dick about not wanting to let the lady have full custody of the child. After michael's death, bob got blamed for being a factor. I think it was like 2 or 3 years later before the lady finally killed herself. And now, poor tiger-lilly (their child) has no mom and no adopted dad. Thanks (possibly) to bob geldof. So yeah, the guy is a dick. For those of you whom know a better version of this story (rather than my scratched up one), feel free to correct me.

Oh yeah, and Bill Nighy ROCKS!

What about the remake of "I'm not going play Sun City"?

I was a 13 year old thinking I was saving the world by watching Live Aid and buying $40 T shirt. Then I found out what % the charities take out for it. The cynicism of my life had begun.

A crisp $1 if anyone can tell me what band opened Live Aid in Philidelphia.

How many times am I going to have to live through the '80's?

That was/is still one of the great songs of the holidays. Even though every one of those persons they were trying to save have been dead for a long time now. Most of those bands were pretty cool as far athe '80's were concerned.

I remember a joke from that time:

What is the fastest animal in Africa?
Answer: A chicken in Ethiopia.

I love how much "USA for Africa" failed. Why no 'VH1 Behind the Music' on this one. We, the USA sucked to the extreme on this; and it was so obvious the very minute they thought of the project. It was so obviously a copycat situation.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still an American who believes we must crush our enemies, until we hear the lamentations of the women as they are dragged before us.

CRUSH TERROR.

Sure, why not? If it raises awareness its worth it. I just read Cause Celeb.

Think people will download it instead of buying it? I hope not.

I still have the origional 45 somewhere.
