"Im George Bush and I skipped my flu shot this year so you, the sickly American can get one. Did you hear that? I sacrificed for America! Don't forget about Poland!"

2004-10-20 09:41:17 AM
Ok, I admit it...that headline was pretty damn clever.

2004-10-20 09:43:57 AM
I heard on the radio today that in NJ they are holding lotteries to see who will even get a flu shot.

Kerry commented on it by saying something to the effect of "George Bush's healthcare for America, you better get lucky!"

Even GWB's comment in the last debate was something along the lines of "If you're healthy, you don't need one."

But gee, I guess healthy people NEVER get the flu.

I've got a flu shot coming, and I'm not going to get it. Anybody want it?

I wonder what I could get for a flu shot on Ebay?

2004-10-20 04:21:00 PM
Obviously a tactical error. Somebody should have told Bush that flu vaccines are made from petroleum. We'd have more serum than we'd know what to do with.

2004-10-20 04:21:10 PM
"Federal health officials said Tuesday that 2.6 million additional doses of flu vaccine will be available in January.." Isn't that when flu season is basically over?

Does anyone else find it strange how serious they make this shortage sound? Its a farking flu shot! People did without this thing for years and years. Its not like we're short antibiotics or the blood supply is running out. Got the flu? Stay in bed, keep warm, drink lots of fluids, maybe take a tylenol or something. Good grief.

2004-10-20 04:23:01 PM
Help is on the way

If you need a flu shot you are a big pussy. That is all.

2004-10-20 04:24:19 PM
Ok... this is just silly.

How is a British company's screw up Bush's fault? I assume the hurricanes were Bush's fault too?

2004-10-20 04:24:24 PM
Great headline.

I see this as a good thing. Maybe some of the *deadwood* will get cleaned out this Winter.

Less seniors = less Social Security checks
Less flu shots = less seniors
Therefore, less flu shots = Social Security system saved!

Conservative compassionatism in action.

I agree with themadmonk - we've managed to live this long without flu shots, me thinks the human race will survive.

deege -

in case you are talking to me.. that was sarcasm - I agree totally.

I also agree, it's a farking flu shot.

/never got one - probabaly never will - useless.

I wonder what kind of problems they had with the vaccine that they had to through out everything that came from that plant? Must have been pretty serious.

2004-10-20 04:27:30 PM
This whole hype over the flu vaccines is just infuriating. To listen to the media, it's amazing the human race survived at all before the flu vaccine came out.

2004-10-20 04:27:59 PM

I think this flu-shot thing is just a status symbol. "Hey Joe, I just got my flu shot. Did you get yours ?"

"No."

"Get away from me, commoner !!"

The elite Gramaton Clerics have been sent in to restore shipments of the drug by shooting everyone in an extremely gay way.

God, what a stupid movie.

The Other
you are right. This is Bush's secret plan to save Social Security. I am on board.

2004-10-20 04:28:33 PM
lionelhutz, themadmonk-

If you roll the numbers, this year's flu vaccine shortage translates to an additional 8000 deaths, roughly 3 x 9/11 in terms of bodycount.

2004-10-20 04:29:35 PM
Word is we will be sending south some of surplus. Damn Canadian drugs....

Flu shots just seem to be a way to make people feel safer and feel good about themselves. The truth is, even with a shot, you are likely to get the flu. The shot merely prepares your body for what is to come.

"Less seniors = less Social Security checks
Less flu shots = less seniors
Therefore, less flu shots = Social Security system saved!

Conservative compassionatism in action."

That was awesome!!! I was always wondering how they were going to solve the social security problem.

Who The Fark Cares? !!!

1. The shots they distribute are for last year's strain
2. The Pharms are controlling the distribution to smaller practices (the ones we use) and bilking them for it (hence to you and me) They have to preorder MONTHS in advance and no guarantee for additional supplies.
3. The Pharms are making a HUGE profit by hiring RNs to work at Drugstores (aka Eckerd, CVS, RiteAid...) to distribute flushots to elderly and ... drugstore customers. Why distribute to doctors when you can make money direct?
4. The strain they finalize doens't necessarily mean its going to work
5. Your body developes an immunity AFTER you get the flu.
6. Lastly, The travel season starts around Thankgiving holidays and guess what? Most people get the flu then till February. So, a flushot in Jan is a waste.

True, elderly, IDpatients (Immune-deficient), and children should be immunized but heck, skipping a year won't hurt.

/Scam and we are the cash cows...

2004-10-20 04:30:24 PM
Then again, guys, little babies have tiny little immune systems. It would be nice if there were at least enough to vaccinate all the babies.

And even for healthy people, a bad bout of the flu could do some shiat to a company's productivity for a few weeks, if a lot of employees get it. Bad for the economy, bad for the country. Which is probably why my old job gave flu vaccines for free two years ago. Back when there was flu vaccine to be had.

I'm just saying, is all.

2004-10-20 04:31:13 PM
Too little, too late indeed.
The CDC recommends getting vaccinated in October or November, BEFORE flu season starts, not at the peak of it in January. Also it takes 2 weeks to become effective once you get vaccinated. For some people that will be February and flu season will almost be over. Don't worry though, prisoners and Congress will all get their flu shots on time and with no waiting.

Here is a funny cartoon I found about the New Jersey "flu lottery"

2004-10-20 04:31:28 PM
Here is another way that Bush is saving the country by ignoring an issue: Global Warming. Every year in Chicago and NYC you hear about the old people dying because it is too hot. Again, old people dying (especially poor old people who can't afford AC) = more Social Security $$$.

Brilliant!

2004-10-20 04:32:02 PM
Me thinks Lionel Hutz is a smart man. paradroid don't know that movie man, its good stuff.

Yes the Hurricanes are Bush's fault! It's God's way of destroying Florida to keep us from farking up the election again.

/Still digging through the rumble of Ivan.

We need to pass a law against naming Hurricanes with names like Ivan (the terrible). Only names like Biff, Skippy, Dave, Percy, Goober, ect.

2004-10-20 04:34:21 PM
The point is that one of the few nice things that the company I work for would do for their employees is provide a free flu shot every winter. And with that came a lollipop. Now that Bush has screwed the economy AND the flu shots, I won't even get the lollipop. What the hell am I going to feed my family this winter?! If Kerry dioesn't win we're screwed!

2004-10-20 04:36:15 PM
Just as a note the flu can be really bad. See the "Spanish Flu" of 1918

Seriously. The big concern is for `at-risk` people - the very old, the very young, people with resperatory illnesses. While we're missing 48 million potential doses of the flu vaccine, saying that 20% of our live population is at risk of imminent death is ludicrous.

If memory serves me, last year we had a "FLU OUTBREAK" because the flu shot was of the wrong strain of Flu..
Calm down folks... you got the flu, you got a few days off... enjoy!

2004-10-20 04:37:00 PM
I haven't had a flu shot in 6 years.

Government androids haven't sent secret messages to my head in 6 years.

Coincidence?

Every year in Chicago and NYC you hear about the old people dying because it is too hot.

And every year in Chicago and NYC you hear about the old people dying because it is too cold.

This whole hype over the flu vaccines is just infuriating. To listen to the media, it's amazing the human race survived at all before the flu vaccine came out.

In 1918-1919 20-40 million people worldwide died from the flu. It's estimated that 675,000 died in this country alone.
