I thought Jon Stewart was always discussed as a possible new host...

Tucker Carlson?

i miss craig...

Tom Green is the second best late night guy right behind Conan.

2004-10-18 10:40:45 PM
I loved Kilborn when he was on ESPN. A very funny and entertaining guy to do the sports. When he jumped shipped and went to Comedy Central to do The Daily Show, he was still funny, but not as entertaining. After that, I never followed his many career moves as I figured he was on a sinking ship and I didn't want to watch him go down with it.

How many people remember when he was on ESPN or that he was the original host of The Daily Show?

2004-10-18 10:48:51 PM
Kilborn just isn't that funny. Jon Stewart and Conan kick his ass.

2004-10-18 10:54:50 PM
Kilborn had models on every and night and would just talk about something stupid that happend to them on a photo shoot. While it may have been fun for Kilborn it was painful to listen to his interviews.

2004-10-18 10:55:04 PM
Howard Stern said that permanent replacement is Michael Ian Black. I think that's cool. I wouldn't have minded Amy Sedaris either. Oh well, I don't watch talk shows.

2004-10-18 11:40:39 PM
Anyone else is better then Craig . Except Michael Ian Black , he's the one person I could come up with that would be even worse then "craiggers". I've seen him do stand up, I didn't even have occasion to smile during it.

/In the cone zone

2004-10-18 11:41:47 PM
Michael Ian Black???!!!! Right on!

Sadly, I doubt it. He's too good for the majority to like him.

Amy Sedaris? Was she up for that spot? I like her but can't see her as a talk-show host, having such a malleable personality. Huh.

2004-10-18 11:56:45 PM
I haven't seen these, but I have a soft spot for Michael Ian Black and anyone else from The State. Whether or not he'd do any good as an interviewer I have no clue.

Old and Busted - Craig Kilborn. New Hotness -- anybody else

2004-10-19 04:52:41 AM
he sucked on cbs, he should have stayed on CC or ESPN. i never watched his show completely through.

2004-10-19 04:59:22 AM
the late late show is garbage anyway, why does anyone care. At that hour you should be either, sleeping, watching pr0n, or sleeping.

Michael Ian Black hosting a talk show?
"HELLO! DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I'M BARRY LUTZ!"

It could work, but there's just something that makes me think Kevin Allison would be better.

I sense a pattern.

Craig does show
Craig leaves show
Show does better.

Hell, it worked for the Daily Show.

Am I the only one who'd think Adam Corralla would be great? I still listen to loveline and he still cracks me up. Though I don't get tv so I didn't see him perform.

Ahh, farkers who remember The State are the bestest farkers. I wanna dip my balls in it!

Top secret documents?! I wanna dip my balls in it!

Though, I challenge anybody on who saw the short lived Dana Carvey Show. Oh my god...that was one of the FUNNIEST shows on TV, even if it only lasted for four episodes.

2004-10-19 05:18:07 AM
And two other The State alumni are on Reno 911.

2004-10-19 05:18:50 AM
I used to love Jon Stewart's bit, but he's gotten waaay too political. If he could actually do a comedy show instead of a 30 minutes hate on somebody I don't care about I'd be delighted for him to replace that hack killborn. I think Craig should, in what passes for a joke on his show, Quit!(look at a different cammera), Quit!(look at a different cammera), Quit!!! and never be on tv or in movies again

/I don't know if killborn's been in anything but old school, but he even sucked in that
//not relevent, but Jon's been hillarious even in bit parts in "half baked", and "The Faculty"
///why the hell are you "on" tv, but "in" a movie?

2004-10-19 05:19:42 AM
Kilborn on TDS: funny
Stewart on TDS: funnier x 1000000
Kilborn on CBS: incredibly not funny
Anyone else on CBS: funnier x 1000000000000000000000000

(mostly I just liked 5 questions, not Kilborn)

re: the state

they need to release a dvd of the state. I would buy it. others would too. Capitalism at work, i tells ya! The "I want to sleep with the state" contest (concept) was one of the funniest things I have ever seen on tv.

re: Craiggers, Adam Carolla et al.... Craiggers can be funny here and there... or at least he would be the last time i watched him 2 years ago... but there's many reasons i stopped watching him. Adam Carolla would be a great replacement. I too still listen to loveline, and probably will for ages.

/wishes it were 1995 for SO many different reasons

2004-10-19 05:24:05 AM
The only reason EVER to watch the Late Late show with Kilborn is because of the insanely hot women that would always show up. It's good for commercial breaks during Conan.

For an unfunny man, he must get some high-quality trim.

2004-10-19 05:26:36 AM

2004-10-19 05:28:15 AM

One of my least favorite State sketches that became my favorite: The Bearded Men of Space Station Eleven. For some reason, it just got funnier the more I watched it.

Best State sketches: James Dixon--Power Jedi Talent Agent, "Tacos", and the one were Kevin and Kerri are driving across country, Death Fight 5000, Prom Night, and Origami (if only for the dialogue).
"Steve, I'm really a guy in drag..."
"I know that... I've always known that..."

Bring Tom Snyder back...

Better yet, let Tom Snyder & Howard Stern host the show together... That'd be entertaining.

2004-10-19 05:31:20 AM
Michael Ian Black is an annoying twat. I can't even watch VH1 anymore because his stupid tired deadpan is always on I love the '20s or some crap. Not that it was watchable anyway.

Christopher Walken--The Talk Show: They could call it, "Walken & Talkin'"

Maybe Harlan Ellison could host a talk show, that'd be fun to watch every night. Orlando Jones seems like he could pull off being a talk show host.

I get points! I tell people about the Dana Carvey Show and I get blank stares...it tanked after about 4 shows but damn it was funny. And really pushed the envelope, too. I seem to remember ABC(?) pulled the plug because the sponsors were afraid of offending middle-class America.

Best (and maybe only) bit I remember--Oliver Stone's WASHINGTON. Antonio Banderas as George Washington...as a coke fiend. Great stuff, it was.

2004-10-19 06:47:36 AM
I went to a Kilborn show couple years back. Even got a t-shirt cause I cheered obnoxiously loud. I had never seen an entire episode of Kilborn, but he was so boring. The prep comedian was way funnier. I actually laughed at his jokes. Keifer Sutherland, just starting out with 24, some chick who did some weird thing with her arms, and a country guy i think.

We also did the Thanksgiving episode. They told us Anna Kournikova was gonna be there, they lied and it wasnt even a funny clip...

Oh, come on. "What up?" was the funniest segment on late night TV.

2004-10-19 08:24:53 AM
OK. A few things.

First off: taco mail. Enough said.

The State is supposedly coming on DVD very soon. MTV agreed to it.

Kilborn was great on ESPN.

Adam Carrola is not only not funny, but he's nowhere near interesting enough to host that show. Also, with Kimmel on at the same time, it's giving WAY too much cred to The Man Show, which is about as funny as a farting contest.

Now, if I were making the call, I would keep the guest hosts forever. It's entertaning like that, it keeps people interested, and it's a great way to get exposure to a lot of great talent.

Jon Stewart fans, think about it. The Daily Show isn't funny because of Jon, it's funny because of EVERYONE BUT JON, who simply plays the straight man to the REAL comedians.

See? Variety is funny. Variety is good. CBS should keep with variety.

I completely disagree. You need someone who is capable of delivering the fake news in a way that makes you laugh, and if the pre-written joke bombs, he/she is likeable enough that they can squeek a laugh out about how bad the joke was. For example Colin Quinn used to do the fake news for SNL and it just sucked. The writing wasn't all that different, but that ass couldn't deliver a line to save his life. I'm still trying to figure out how he became famous.

Hey, if the bar for late night talk is set at Kilborn, anybody can do it.

A ham sandwich would get better ratings than Kilborn. He makes Jimmy Kimmel seem like a comedy genius in comparison.

Craig is a dick. He was a dick on the Daily Show, he was a dick as a sportscaster. He will always be a dick.

Craig, no one will think your self referential anti humor is as funny as you do. Except for Letterman, who perhaps is the lamest unfunny 'funnyman' in the known universe.

Craig was a douchebag in High School too. Hastings, MN has produced far better..... Like Jim "Rosey" (an alias, because I think he might be a judge now), who once got hit in the back with a baseball bat so hard he pooped his pants. Rosey still stood up and kicked the crap out of his assailant.

While no one will argue with you that Colin Quinn is a blight on television, the true stars of The Daily Show have always been the correspondants...it was like that with Craig, and it's still that way with Jon...they just play straight-man. I'm not saying Jon isn't funny. He's pretty good. But for an example, Mo Rocca kicks Jon's ass in funny.

Maybe Harlan Ellison could host a talk show

I second, but only if it's live. Any show where the host could flip out at any moment and start screaming at audience members would be a great show.

(Saw him speak once - the P.A. was bad, a woman in the audience says "we can't hear you," and he screams at her, "well, why don't I come out there and sit in your lap, you c*nt!?!" Mind you, this is within 10 seconds of him taking the stage.)

Craig Kilborn - Unfunny
John Stewart - Unfunny (unless your balls haven't dropped yet)
Letterman - Painfully unfunny. Makes babies cry.
Leno - Old and busted
Conan - Lost his luster (R.I.P. Carl "Oldie" Olsen)
Jimmie Kimmel - See 'John Stewart'
Dave Chappel - Funniest dude EVAR!
Norm MacDonald - Sometimes funny, but wouldn't make it.
Colin Quinn - About as funny as kicked in the head
Dennis Miller - See 'Colin Quinn'
Michael Savage - Funny but preachy

Ok, this is a really stupid post and I'm bored.

2004-10-19 10:09:10 AM
I'm not sure it has anything to do with Kilborne. Probably because people are wondering which guest host could become permanent. Then they will all stop watching again.

2004-10-19 10:17:20 AM
Craig was the best host of the Daily Show, I thought he was EXCELLENT there.. Jon Stewart is a tool (remember him as the unemployed loser that hung around MTV for like a DECADE??).. and with Kilby on the Late Show - it's just not funny enough...

Kilborn was offered a fat multi-year contract to stay with the show, but chose to turn it down, because he was bored with the job.

So, just to set the record straight:

Not fired from ESPN
Not fired from The Daily Show
Not fired from The Late Late Show

He's filthy rich and has supermodels feeding him peeled grapes these days, so he simply has no interest in doing a talk show any more.

Now how much do you hate him?

2004-10-19 10:41:32 AM
Dana Carvey Show & the state kicked ass.
I watched all the very few episodes of the dana carvey show made. I remember Grandma the clown, and the skin heads from Maine. That was some funny shiat.

/don't care much for them queers.

2004-10-19 10:42:45 AM
Michael Ian Black is half of the reason I can't watch those "I love the ___" shows. The nostalgia part is great but the painfully unfunny comments from him and Hal Sparks totally ruin it for me.

Craig Kilborn annoyed me on Sport Center. Craig Kilborn annoyed me on The Daily Show. His current show is very easy to ignore. It's almost as though he no longer exists. It's perfect. If they replace him, the replacement will be just as easy to ignore. I'm hoping it's MIB.

John Stewart is very sharp and has great timing. The Daily Show is always entertaining.

2004-10-19 10:56:54 AM
I had a room mate at one point that Ellison punched in the face. Surprisingly for pretty much no reason at all.

Yeah, he would be an entertaining live host.

I hate Kilborne. I thought 5 Questions was fun on TDS, but Stewart certainly was an incredible pick for that show. Michael Ian Black? Meh. I'd have to watch a couple times to decide.

2004-10-19 11:15:32 AM

I have no stance on Craig Kilborne's amusement factor. I didn't think he was all that funny on The Daily Show, but I haven't seem him anywhere else. I didn't realize he was still on TV.

Oh, and The State was pretty good, but for my MTV sketch comedy dollar, I most miss The Idiot Box. It had Alex Winter in it (The Other Guy from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure), and from my hazy recollection was downright psychotic.

/Damn These Eyes!

As for "The State", God Bless Michael Patrick Jann. That is all.

I heard Harlan Ellison is pretty sick-maybe all that bile catches up with you

models or no-models(a semi-name bore in showbiz can get "models"?!, Garsh, Mickey!)Kilborn just sucks, don't waste my time

2004-10-19 12:03:10 PM
The State was pure comedy gold. Sadly, few people I run with now have ever even heard of it. I made the "I want to dip my balls in it" comment a few months back and got nothing but blank stares.

As for Kilborn, I liked his brand of comedy, but the weak part of his show was always his interviews. In part because his guests were many times fairly borish.

Although, if anybody saw the Ian McClellan interview, his 5 questions was maybe the coolest.

2004-10-19 12:04:39 PM
I just want to add something though. You don't like Kilborn, that's cool. I like his humor. I don't care much for Jon Stewart's. That's cool too. Why should we have only one comic mouth in the media? A little variety is the spice of life. I don't want to see Stewart's face everywhere. Just like I'm tired of Janeane Garofalo doing a cameo in every movie, writing a forward on every book and being at every PR event in Hollywood. I used to like her a lot then got too much of her. So mix it up a little.

In conclusion, stay outa my booze.

2004-10-19 12:09:29 PM
Kilborn's show was brilliant. It's a shame that he left CBS, though I respect his decision. Conan's show is just so trite that it's hilarity is undermined by it's stupidity. Every night, he'd come out, say the same shiat over and over and everybody eats it up. If jumping walking out, pointing to a band, and jumping up and down infront of a camera is funny, then we're dumber than I thought.

2004-10-19 12:09:41 PM
Shrugging Atlas: "Sadly, few people I run with now have ever even heard of it."

"People you run with"?? Do you "run with a crew"?? lol :-)

2004-10-19 12:10:46 PM
Michael Ian Black huh?
I wonder if the kraft service table serves muppet.

2004-10-19 12:15:29 PM
They were gonna make a nice DVD box set of The State, but apparently it's in legal wrangles (probably for music rights, etc). Hopefully it will be upon us soon. Anyways, I say give Black the show. Occasionally have it be hosted by Barry and Levon, complete with $240 worth of puddin'. He can also host it as Captain Monterey Jack. Louie definitely needs to be his sidekick, always offering his balls to guests. Actually, they should just hire every State alum who isn't already on Reno 911.

2004-10-19 12:19:25 PM
Bringing in a State alum to replace Kilborn is what I call sweet, delicious justice.

"240 dollars...worth of pudding."

maybe this is where all Stewart's viewers went

(yes, yes, i know it's not the same slot).

Harlan Ellison, Lewis Black, and George Carlin in a cranky three-man tag-team talk show format. Somebody is gonna cry, I guarantee it.

I've been watching the Daily show from its first season. The writers are what makes it funny. I like John because he's funny in his own rite as well. The only thing I didn't like about Kilborn on TDS was his constant complaining about being on a cable show. I bet he regrets his move to CBS looking back at how big that "cable show" is now.

Smartassshanna:

I think Louis Black is AWESOmE, but if you saw his election coverage in last few years he really awful interviewer. I think when Andy Rooney kicks off Louis would be perfect for the job. He's funny, sharp, angry and wouldn't be doing a bad impression of Andy Rooney, unlike the asshats they have had on 62 minutes.

two other The State alumni are on Reno 911.

If by "two" you mean "four", yes.

SineSwiper:

I'll do you one better: I've got all the Dana Carvey episodes on tape somewhere.

That show was the most original show that will ever see its face on network TV again. I'm sure all the network suits thought "Dana Carvey? That non-threatening guy from SNL? I love the Church Lady." -- without listening to any of his stand-up or researching the writers on the show. Which they should have done, especially before making it one of the first direct advertiser-sponsored shows ever. (And what a great cocksmack they gave Mountain Dew.)

The writers, by the way, were most of the original writing staff from Conan's Late Night
run, including Robert Smigel (aka Triumph, the SuperFans, Lookwell, TV Funhouse (the shorts and the show), etc. etc. etc.)

Mountain Dew..

It looks just like liquid sunshine.

I thought they were going to try out Amy Sedaris? Maybe she's too busy making "Strangers With Candy" the movie. I would love to see her on a nightly basis, she's funny, smart and lovely! (Plus her sweaty tube top scene in "Maid In Manhattan" was hot)

Was Craig ever funny???
I'm thinking no.....

Dustin Diamond for host of the Late Late Show!

JewelsMC,

then how in the blue hell did the daily show ever make it?

The writers.

Kilborn was great on ESPN, good on the Daily Show, crappy now.

And yes, Stewart has gotten too "preachy" for me too-- his ego is through the roof. Was great at first, but stopped watching a year ago.

Outlaw2097:

I was referring to Craig on the Late Late Show. He was never funny there. He was OK on the Daily Show. The Daily Show was better with Jon Stewart, but he's becoming to preachy.

Can someone tell me who the hell this Harlan Ellison guy is? I am afraid that I haven't heard of him....

Yeah, Lewis is a bit over-the-top angry...and I haven't seen him do an interview yet, Mikey.

Maybe Colin Quinn could take Craig's place? Naw...wait, maybe that Patrice O'neal guy that Colin always has on there...(Tough Crowd).

I guess I'm the only one who thought he was funny. I liked his smarmy prick persona over all the other kiss ass talk show hosts.

I'm with you, but I think we're alone. You take right, I'll take left?

Have to agree with you. Also, check the goth thread from yesterday, I have a couple presents for you there.

This washing machine would get better ratings than Kilborn.

Oh, and The State was pretty good, but for my MTV sketch comedy dollar, I most miss The Idiot Box.

Yeah, that's another MTV series I miss. "Burrowing Bishop" and the "Rock Accountant" were funny.

kilborn's way too whitey. of course, everyone else is whitey as well, but ol' craigers played up the country club aspect of it waaayy too much.

but he was a basketball fan, and i do respect that.

I liked Kilborn on TBS much better than Jon Stewart too. I never thought I'd see anyone else, anywhere, say that. The correspondants Craig had were also funnier than the current crop.

Kilborn was great on ESPN, and great on The Daily show (I liked him better than Stewart as well); however, he was out of his league in Late Night. I don't think I watched a single show.

top five questions were funny, at first.

but the "play that music whiteboy" intro was stellar...

SineSwiper:I'll do you one better: I've got all the Dana Carvey episodes on tape somewhere.

I don't know whether to be impressed or concerned. Both, actually.

I saw all of them too. I really looked forward to that show every week for a month. I think the Clinton "Suckling president" ended any network prime-time future instantly.

A personal fave: "Celebrity Bloopers and Dark Sides." Not sure how many people realize the Casey Kasem bit is VERY closely based on a famous studio meltdown (try and get the tape, it's out there.)

"The British...are killing me!" (Banderas as Washington)

I'm glad to hear other people are baffled by Colin Quinn's continued presence in any medium. Thud, thud, thud.

As for Ellison--a very bright man, but the angry young man maybe, just maybe, worked about 30-40 years ago. When he was a young man.

(Actually, though I like a lot of his writing, I didn't like the act too much. I speak from both second- and first-hand experience.)

if you are going to reference someone in your name and list his career in your bio, get the college right.
