This guy is an asshat. Google DS is NOT meant for use on multi-user machines, because it DOES ITS JOB of indexing EVERYTHING. Meaning that it indexes files from other user caches/profiles. If this idiot did 10 minutes of research, he would have figured that out. This is a non-issue.

2004-10-16 09:44:40 AM
It searches thru AOL/AIM chat records on your machine? It seaches your IE history?

I am afraid Google desktop would be bored on my machine because I dont have either of those...

I paid for X1 a while ago. It kicks @ss, views a heck of a lot more types of files, too.

Until now, AIM conversations with your buddies disappeared from your computer the moment you closed the discussion window.

Hello. Welcome to the Internets. Please be aware that everything you do here is logged somewhere. Did this guy just get his first Prodigy account or something?

Beyond the poorly-informed writing, I will say that its a bit strange that Google Desktop keeps its OWN copy of documents. First of all, that seems like a silly resource hog. If it kept some set of calculated "pointers" to certain things (like when a database is optimized), I'd see that.

It don't like my anonymising software. Given a choice between the anonymising software and Google desktop? No contest, anonymising software wins.

I, for one, welcome our Google everything overlords.

fredcat - although you might've checked this already, are you sure that it doesn't work with it as opposed to just having trouble installing? It refuses to install if you have some stuff installed, but if you uninstall them, install Goog, then reinstall the other proggy, they work fine...

The thing is, this article has a great point to make, they just direct it at the wrong target. It is important to realize how much data on your computer is easily available (expecially on multi-user machines), but it's not something you should biatch at google about, it's something about Windows and multi-user machines in general that one has to learn about. The reason stupid articles like this get written is that people have this belief about security, and Google's thing happens to be the first to make it easy to do what has been possible all along - to quickly and easily find other user's, or your own, files that aren't properly protected.

You know what else is valuable but creepy?
Letting your neighbor watch you sleep for 50 bucks.

I am still waiting for Google to make their own web browser. Heck, Google OS...

2004-10-16 07:44:31 PM
GoogOS?

Googux?

I don't know why we have the Library of Congress any more now that we've got Google.

One day I watched an entire DVD I downloaded out of a Google cache. It was "Starsky and Hutch". It sucked.

What would you do if you Googled yourself and saw something inaccurate? It might be easier to change your life to match Google than to try and change Google's cache about your life.

2004-10-17 02:08:15 AM
I'm confused... Why are there two of these?

2004-10-17 02:08:32 AM
Googux? ...Apple has beat them to the punch ... a powerful and friendly *nix ...look for the next move to be apple to get AMD to make the next gen of 64-bit procs ... then Mac OS is cross-compiled to Wintel machines and Microsoft skates quietly out of monopoly

From the horses mouth:
We realize that many of our users use Mozilla Firefox as their primary browser, and we may consider adding increased Firefox support in a future version of Desktop Search.

Kind of disapointing.

It lasted on my system for 3 days. I experienced several system "hangs" that weren't occuring before I installed it, and haven't since I deleted it. And it doesn't find enough file types for my taste, either.

yeah, keep dreaming about that cross-over mac OS.

The whole company is based on being exclusive, and they make plenty of money off of it.

Anyway, google reinvented the internet searching wheel, but there are only so many wheels they can reinvent before they run dry. We never expected google in the first place, but it's great. Why do we always expect the next big thing to come from someone we already know?

2004-10-17 02:21:23 AM
Instant repeat?

Is this meant to simulate the caching behavior?

Perhaps the mods are really artistic geniuses and not asleep at the wheel!

The marketing for gmail, such as it is, is genius. While it is nice as far as free web-based e-mail goes, making anything scarce, to just about any degree, creates demand . . . for something that is free. Gdiguy hit it on the head--whatever you look at or put on any of the internets is fair game.

yeah, keep dreaming about that cross-over mac OS.

I don't believe that the world is going to go mac ... I am just saying that they doubled their audience ... mac OS is now an attractive OS for geeks as well as your traditional elitist, snobby, non-computer literate Mac user :):) ... a step beyond that if they compile against the AMD 64-bit procs in next gen ... then we all of the sudden have about 20-25% market share for apple ... and the rest of the sheep will still enjoy their blue screens ...

GRANTED these are big ifs

I disabled the AIM indexing.. not because I don't want it logging my chats, just because it conflicts with my AIM chat logging software i already use =P

I've been logging since may of 2002 i think. (and off&on for years, but never with a program).. my AIM log folder is 80,583,094 bytes

I did that same thing too digidorm, and this is what I got. I think it's kinda creepy. The house looks like it has a huge mouth.

I'm mainly using Google DS to search my email.. I still have all my emails from 1996 until now.. searching used to take hours, and if i didnt type the exact phrase i was looking for, it usually wouldnt find any results

When gmail came out, i liked it because of the indexed search feature (who needs 1gig, just give me a fast indexed search feature that doesnt need exact phrases to actually find something), but gmail doesnt help me with my 20 or so pop3 accounts or my 9 years of emails.

But with Google DS, i can finally search all those emails instantly.. thank you GOD (Google)!

GODAMNIT. I wrote up a big long post for this thread, couldn't post it because this one had been de-greenlighted, so I moved it over to the other one and posted successfully... Then THAT one was de-greenlighted and now it's lost to all but the TFers!

I wanna be a Fark mod ... that way instead of it being 3 o'clock in the morning and being drunk and TRYING to be funny I can have 3 o'clock in the morning and try to maintain continuity in chaos. That would be WAY more fun.

/Hats off to the mods ... y'all are way braver than I am

Hmm...now where did I see a search function like that? Oh, yes - OS X.

Note also that you can specify some directories that you don't want Google Desktop to look in. I would suggest blocking out your porn directories so that when you have family over and you're searching for information on the exports of Brazil, the directory in which you've stored all the pics of the "Brazilian Women's Soccer Team" shoot doesn't show up.

/just sayin'

Google DS is NOT meant for use on multi-user machines, because it DOES ITS JOB of indexing EVERYTHING.

That's a HUGE problem to keep in mind when checking one's mail on internet cafe computers when you're away from home. Creepy indeed.
