Who is Chris Chelios?

2004-10-15 11:16:04 AM
Good. Maybe when the CBA is resolved, he'll stay his ass in Greece. One less Redwing makes real NHL fans rejoice!

2004-10-15 11:31:03 AM
Chris Chelios is just following in the footsteps of other Red Wings who have had interesting and different hobbies - such as Larianov and his chess.

kre8iv_gal - real NHL fans come from places where it snows in winter. And Red Wing fans are REAL hockey fans. They don't call it Hockeytown for nothing.

NHL Hockey is dead. *sob*

Time to start watching the smaller leagues. $30 for front row tickets sure beats the hell out of $230 for the same seat at an NHL game.

/why couldn't they lock out baseball again?

2004-10-15 11:37:24 AM
Greeks do bobsleding? I thought they would be more the two man luge type.

2004-10-15 11:48:26 AM
Greek bobsledding? Is that what they're calling it these days?

Amen!

Don't forget Uwe Krupp and the sled dog racing fiasco. Opa!

Chris Chelios is the best example of all that is wrong with the league. That piece of trash needs to retire already, take Messier with him, and stop ruining the NHL for the young players.

THIS IS THE NHL STORY THAT GETS THE GREEN LIGHT?!?!?! WTF???

I'd say this isn't as weird as you might think.

Have any of you actually seen a hockey players legs? Holy crap. Those things are absolutely amazing. I was on a golf course with Cam Neely one summer about 2 years after he retired, and his legs were STILL unbelieveable. They looked like tree trunks.

I'm sure Chelly, even at 40+, could put a pretty good push on a bobsled.

There's a good joke about Konstintinov in there but I'm now trying to stay out of hell.

He should start with Bettman and Goodenow.

Bah, let the NHL burn in hell. The millionaire players vs. the billionaire owners. Let me find some sympathy for them...Or not.

BOTH parties are to blame for this whole farking mess.

Go Leafs go.

How on earth is this greenlighted? The only hockey post since Bertuzzi, and this is it?

Do 1/2 of these farkers even know who Chelios is? And for the half that do, do we care what this old man is doing with his spare time?

Here's a good article though, where Chelios gets something right. This article is the future, gentelmen. read it well.

99 would make a great commisioner, and there would be the added benefit of taking him away from Pres. of Team Canada. Better for me, at least. Go USA.

2004-10-15 04:29:18 PM
Or he'll come back to Chicago and play for the Wolves. Which he is also considering.

2004-10-15 04:30:45 PM
Go Wings !

/got nuthing

2004-10-15 04:32:05 PM
I would agree that Gretz would probably make a good commish. Bettman expanded the league far too quickly to markets that simply can't handle it.

I'm a huge Lightning fan. I've loved 'em since I was a little kid and they were first brought here. I believe that the Tampa market can sustain a hockey team, and has quite well, even a few years before they won the Southeast for the first time. Tampa has turned out to be a decent market, but it still isn't a move that I would have made.

IMO, Bettman was an idiot for moving to Carolina, and creating teams in Nashville and Miami. They're three markets that will never be able to sustain a long term fan base for a hockey team. It was even a foolish move to go to Tampa at the time, but in the end, it's worked out quite well.

If Bettman hadn't expanded so greatly, and so quickly, you wouldn't see some of the problems that the NHL has right now. However, when a sport is unable to market itself in the country where the majority of its teams are, then salaries cannot climb out of control like they have, and it needs to be stopped.

I like Bettman for having the balls to create the lockout until a solution is reached, but I hate him for letting it get to this point, when it should have been resolved in 1994.

/long rant
//needs hockey
///I'll even take the AHL

Gretz as commisioner? His first act..every roughing penalty now carries a 3 game suspension.

2004-10-15 04:39:17 PM
I miss my Flames, especially after that incredible six-week party the city had during the playoffs. That was a great time. But $16 fo rinkside seats to the Hitmen (WHL) is okay, too.

2004-10-15 04:45:22 PM
At least you have some minor league hockey near you. The closest thing to me is the Orlando Seals of the SPHL (Southern Professional Hockey League) and they lost their lease to the TD Waterhouse Center in Orlando. It'd be an hour and a half drive, but it would have been worth it to see a little hockey.

Bradenton, about an hour south of here is getting an ECHL team next season, but that doesn't help me out too much.

I suppose I'm relegated to getting my sorry ass up to the rink to play pickup games, and maybe watch a junior hockey game while I'm there.

2004-10-15 04:56:39 PM
I'm a huge Lightning fan. I've loved 'em since I was a little kid and they were first brought here.

How old are you now -- 12? Fact remains your so-called Stanley Cup parade was a farce compared to those in Detroit. Can't wait for the season to start so I can see Detroit kick some ass this year.

and yes, they need to contract. You should not have half your teams in cities where ice does not occur naturally. Carolina? Phoenix? Please STOP!

2004-10-15 05:01:59 PM
Of course the parade was a farce compared to those in Detroit, it's not like this city isn't a bandwagon town to begin with. It's sickening to see the 'new' fans around here, but hey...if it makes Davidson money, it keeps him happy. If Davidson is happy, Feaster is happy.

/can't wait to go see a few games in Albany
/gonna miss his Bruins.

kre8iv_gal - real NHL fans come from places where it snows in winter

Yeah, you are not allowed to like a sport due to the consequence of where you were born. most asinine thing I have read all day.

killershark, while we are at it should we do the same with football?

Were you people raised near an open nuclear reactor?

2004-10-15 05:14:20 PM
Didn't Chelios trash a Japanese hotel room the last time he was at the Olympics?

2004-10-15 05:21:26 PM
Melt
Or he'll come back to Chicago and play for the Wolves. Which he is also considering.

Yeah, but that brings up the following interesting story about Lonny Bohonos, a former NHLer, who has spent recent years playing well in Europe, but lost his job... when locked-out NHLers came and took his place in Switzerland!

Snipet from the article:
It seems the same players who are fighting for their rights and unaccepting of controls over here are acting like hockey bandits in Europe. Every time a Dany Heatley or a Daniel Briere or a Patrice Brisebois sign to play -- they were the three latest to agree to terms yesterday -- they are ostensibly taking advantage of the free-market system they themselves oppose.

Just Ask Bohonos About Lockout

2004-10-15 05:23:52 PM
So what happens to the Stanley Cup? Does the last player from the Lightning to have a day with it get to keep it?

/next in line...

2004-10-15 05:24:46 PM

Chris Chelios is a GENIUS because he is saying exactly what I have said from the beginning, Wayne Gretzky should be running the show. He'd come up with a great plan to solve the lockout, and knowing Wayne, he'd probably do it from behind the net ;)

2004-10-15 05:28:35 PM
Can we all just compromise and agree that teams themed after Disney movies shouldn't exist?

2004-10-15 05:38:32 PM
caitech, I'll give you that one.

2004-10-15 05:40:40 PM
Chelios should just STFU. Flashman73's point is right on the money. How would all these players react if the owners brought up some minor leaguers for some tryouts? Or even players from the European leagues?(whose positions are being filled by locked out NHLers.)Maybe a year or two of lockout will kill a couple of these cities that dont support thier teams.
People seem to forget that there's a third party to be blamed for all of this financial crap.

-The agents for telling the players they're worth millions
-The players for believing it
-The owners for paying it

/go flames!

2004-10-15 05:56:15 PM
Wow, I'd like to see what kind of dives Chelios can do in a bobsled. He could still jam a stick between a guys legs though...

The only thing I respect about him is that he was never a Maple Leaf.

/Go Vancouver Giants (Western Hockey League for you yanks)

2004-10-15 06:13:26 PM
One: Leafs suck
Two: Go Giants
Three: I/we miss hockey.

so that's why Chelios is such a big supporter!

For those of you upset about the lockout, there is more than one league. Go see an AHL, ECHL, etc. game. Seeing a game in person is vastly different than watching one on TV.

/Off to watch the raising of the AHL championship banner.
//Still basking in the glow of my 2nd greenlighted submission

theborishone wins!

/Chelios is a jerk

2004-10-15 07:51:05 PM
When Chris Chelios played for Chicago we here in Detroit hated him.
Of course now that we see him play on our team and see the influence he has amongst the younger defensive players now on the Red Wings we respect him a whole lot more.
One other thing to remember is that Chelios at age 38? (not sure) was runner up defensive player of the year. The only reason he lost out was because his team mate Nick Lindstrom won it.

Go Chris hope it works out for you.

/Shameless plug: Chris' resturant Cheli's Chili makes a great bowl of chili.
