Live free or die?

I say it is time for a change of motto.

How about "Live free as long as it's OK with everyone else"

Can someone please explain the irrational fear of an inanimate object (a gun) to me? I've never understood it

Libertarianism is a conservative alternative, in the sense that conservative means LESS government.

In today's political spectrum, conservative has lost that meaning. When is the last time a conservative has reduced the size of the gov?

For all you liberal bashers coming out of the woodwork, get a grip. This kind of shiat isn't the work of the left. The ACLU was the first group on the kid's side. This is the work of the soccer mom mentality. Newsflash folks. Soccer moms don't vote democrat.

So called "soccer moms" (in the derogatory sense) belong to no political party. Both Democrats and Republicans need to stop trying to shove their undesirables into the other party's camp

He could have been pictured in a pool, automobile, motorcycle, bathtub or many other items that claim many more lives than a shotgun does every year. Strange isn't it. Shotguns are just tools for sport.

Having gone to a Highschool that actually forced you three times a week to lug around a '03 Springfield, I say , let the kid pose with his scatter gun.

I bet if he was holding an aborted fetus they'd let his picture stay.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people...

Those who are offended by this obviously didn't grow up learning anything about the proper use of guns.

I agree. Ignorance is the main issue here. People fear what they can't understand.

The words conservative and liberal are meaningless nowadays.

Conservative about what?
Liberal about what?

I'll repeat what others have tried to point out:

They didn't ban the farking photo from the yearbook.

They just moved it to a different section, or as LittleBarOfSoap would say, to the back of the bus.

Jeebus!

A "real" AK is a gun that uses the Kalshinikov action originaly used in the AK-47. A Saiga, VEPR, AK-74 whatever you call it, it is technicly an AK. Full-auto or not.

West Virginia is a big gun state and i can can say that more people die from obesity related illness there from all the free food the government provides (welfare), than do from guns. Can't say the same for the deer.

BTW.. Bambi is delicious (and healthy) =o)

What assholes. They gonna ban the Tennis team holding their rackets too? Sheesh, it's a sport he participates in, what's the big deal? I could see if it were a gang banger with a handgun, but that kid looks like the "all american" kid of the 50's.

New Hampshire's old motto:

"Live Free or Die"

Politically correct, aka 'modern' or 'progressive' version:

"Live Free as long as you don't offend anyone in any way"

2004-10-13 11:34:29 AM
They said that he could pose with his sports related equipment but not the gun.

I say that he should kill a deer, and send in a picture of him gutting the animal and up to his elbows in blood. No gun right?

See them squirm on that one.

...In today's political spectrum, conservative has lost that meaning. When is the last time a conservative has reduced the size of the gov?

Sadly, I have to agree. It's a matter of lesser of evils - meaning Libertarianism is the best. Repubs however tend to "spend" money either cutting taxes (which to the left is considered spending) or in one-time expenses like projects or computer/weapon systems and such. It can be argued (and proven) that cutting taxes eventually produces MORE revenue but it's hard to exactly predict and even the attempt at discussing it causes crippling emphalactic shock amongst liberals, making the whole issue unexplorable. Projects eventually expire and are paid off as opposed to liberal favorites such as entitlement programs which HAVE to grow each and every year and NEVER end. They're much more expensive and destructive.

If you take the "tax cut" numbers out of the "spending" column, then democrats just kill republicans in spending.

And anyways, since 9/11 we've had to create an entire new layer of government called Homeland Security. Now, I have ALWAYS been first in line against expanding government size but I am reluctantly accepting it as a realization of the times we live in. It sucks but there you go. If you think the democrats would lighten up on HS if they were in power, even THEY are not that stupid. Not gonna happen.

You can get away with the conflicting goals of cutting taxes and growing government only for so long. Sooner or later one has to give. I don't ever see the repubs giving into abandoning their opposition to taxes - they'd be eliminated from the political map.

Yes it is skeet shooting, but how many high schoolers today know what that is? They would see a gun and think this kid was crazy. ever since columbine, high schoolers are always thinking that their school is next, and having a picture of a kid with a gun would probably freak them out.

2004-10-13 11:40:35 AM
Of course, this passes the "global test" of the yearbook staff....

Good. Maybe it will shock them enough to actually think about something before forming an opinion about it.

What? How many highschoolers do you know? "Always thinking that their school is next"... not really. If that were true, you know why that is? Your thought process. Which is put the kids in a safety bubble and don't let any images or sounds come near them that could be perceived as dangerous. And just to be sure, make sure you constantly remind them that they have to be afraid of everything.

I'm glad you're wrong. Kids are actually a little smarter than that.

Again....

those who are afraid of guns are obviously not educated on them. As in all they know of guns comes from news and TV violence.

It is a PARENT'S job to put it into context. (parenting and shielding kids from everything bad in the world is another issue)

"Blasted liberals!"

Eh, not all liberals. In fact, I'd guess not most. I'm pretty damn liberal and I think this is really moronic. The kid is holding the gun in the least threatening way possible, even. I'm pretty sure we had a gun picture or two in my yearbook and I went to a high school in a really, really blue area.

My guess? The schoolboard doesn't want to be sued by some crazy ass soccer mom. Maybe I'm just more rational than most liberals, but I doubt it.

"For my senior art class, I did a still life painting with a .30-.30 Winchester in it...At the end of each class I just had to turn it over to my instructor who kept it locked up in the front office."

USPMadness, that is just so sad on multiple levels.

What's next? Are we to become some kind of Voodoo society, where you can terrorize people just by waving pictures, tokens, icons at people?

Mark12A -- Well, I got the impression that USP meant that *the gun* had to be locked up in the front office, not the painting. I would assume USP was working on the still life in their senior art class, which means the gun had to be in the school, which accounts for the safety procedures, which make complete sense.

2004-10-13 11:52:33 AM
We had a dumbass pose with his dirt bike and another with his bike ala Greg LeMond. One kid wore a pimp outfit and close to half had cowboy hats on. You are free to look like a dumbass in your senior photo, so your kids can laugh at you in 20 years.

The guys also bought their guns to school if they went hunting in the moring before class. You just had ot notify the office and lock it in your locker. Things sure have changed since 1992.

I'm not a hick but I lived near a bunch of them.

FL8ME? Hehe, is that "flame" or "fellate me"?

I have a yearbook with a picture of a kid sitting in the lobby of the school with his hunting rifle. I can just imagine the problems he would have now getting on the
school bus with the rifle. Of course my school also would excuse all the guys for the first week of hunting which never seemed too fair for those of us that didn't have
families that took week long hunting trips. Boy do the 70's seem like a dark ages.

Personally, I think the school was just trying to one-up him in lameness.
"Oh, you think you are going to pose for some dorky shot with your stupid shotgun?"
"Derrrrr....Yeah."
"Oh yeah? Well, we're gonna ban your picture from the yearbook as a zero tolerance policy"
"Noooooooooo!!!!! It's true the lameness of a school administrator is unstoppable."

I mean, it's not like he's holding up an AK-47, with a picture of George Bush with a hole in his head with a caption that read "ALLAH ACKBAR!!!!"

He's just showing off how he fools his parents into letting him go out into the woods to have the ghey sex with his friends.

The best part about Fark is the people who jump to ridiculous conclusions.

"He is probably 7' 0" tall, which means he needs to be kneeling down and needs the gun to hold him up."

If you cannot come up wtih an opinion without making up facts that aren't there, do not post. It is as simple as that!

Apparently, the ACLU lawyers tripped over each other rushing to defend the kid. If only he'd been wearing a controversial T-shirt.

The Supreme Court has already ruled that schools can censor school publication in Hazelwood and other cases. Nice try, but take that "lol wheres the ACLU" somewhere else.
