If they're short of funds, couldn't they just sell the naming rights: St. MetLife Rescue Dogs?

No no no: St. Pfizer Rescue Dogs™

i didn't think they were still being used.
thought they stopped ages ago.

its kinda sad when things you never knew still existed stop existing

Has anyone seen those big sea rescue dogs? They freaking rock. They're about the size of bears and drag babies out of sinking ships and stuff. But I don't think they have brandy barrels.

And to think that every time my rottweiler tackled me and then laid on top of me, I was thinking she was just forcing me to pet her. She actually was trying to save my life!!

Those monks need a paypal "Support Us" link.

ferro_man,

Dude, you so missed Switzerland's Bicycle corps then.

Zennix - I tend to agree with you. This is one of those causes that I would support in a heartbeat.

A barrel a day keeps the search parties away. Or at least keeps us drunk. Yay drunk monkage.

2004-10-06 07:28:14 AM
I was surprised to read that they never actually carried the little barrels under their chins... it was just an 19th Century artists' add-on/interpretation.

2004-10-06 07:30:23 AM
I would definately support that. I remember that stuff from when I was little and when I heard it on the radio last night I was like...well that sucks, but so it is, the old makes way for the new - and pretty soon we'll have nanocarpets to do the lifesaving in the dangerous mountainous terrain. (hopes I'm not the only one who remembers them...)

/vague reference I hope not

Wonder how long until a 'representative' from the Chinese Embassy offers these Monks' dogs 'a good home?'

How many dogs did the Monastary still have?

When I was a child, I was infuriated when these dogs would arrive at the stranded mountaineer, only to make themselves a cocktail, complete with garnish, and then leave the scene.

Now, I find it hilareous.

I was kind of bummed when I found out the Swiss eat dogs. The barrel must be the special sauce.

2004-10-06 08:28:40 AM
The Swiss do not eat dogs, where did you get that from?

2004-10-06 08:32:10 AM
And where were you when the Chinese needed you, IdeasGuy?

"they would instinctively lie on top of them and lick them to keep them warm."
and also used friction to warm their legs.

Sheesh, it's separate, not seperate. The grandfather of Internet spelling mistakes!

/explodes in a nazi-filled ball of grammar

I visited Switzerland with my family many moons ago, and our friends that lived there had a St. Bernard. Drooling/Spittle aside, they are great dogs.

I visited the Grande St. Bernard Pass a few years ago, and actually had a chance to see the dogs there. They have a pretty cool museum there too. One warning, even in July it is fricking cold up there in the pass. It's above the snow line too. If you get the chance to visit, do so.

Since nobody else here seems to have one, here's a shot of my 6-month old Saint, Koby. Link to photo album with more.

He's pretty upset about the news above.

"The dogs never carried small barrels of brandy to revive climbers; 19th-century artists added that picturesque touch."

That's just like finding out that there is no Santa Claus. :(

Yes Ripside... you certainly do

2004-10-06 11:44:53 AM
This is indeed [Sad]! Before the was nutsack squirrel, there were St. Bernards with brandy casks. Before there was Admiral Akbar, there were St. Bernards with brandy casks. Another visual cliche in danger of falling into disuse. I hope someone comes up with a plan to rescue the rescuers.

[Note to submitter: there is a rat in Separate.]

My Puppy.

That's sad. And only four monks left too. I guess nobody says "I want to be a monk when I grow up" anymore.
