was it for Battle Field Earth?....
2002-02-12 04:44:16 PM
Don't forget to take her in the back and strip search her.
Ya know, procedural exercise.
2002-02-12 04:45:15 PM
The libertarian party is kind of retarded with these puns all over their articles.
2002-02-12 04:45:15 PM
Nah, it was for renting Gladiator, Jurassic Park 3, and simular shiatty movies.
2002-02-12 04:47:33 PM
This George Getz dude should shut the FARK up with those crappy puns. If the Libertarian Party ever wants to be taken seriously, they need to fire his ass immediately!

Call him stupid, but don't call him late for dinner! HAR HAR!
2002-02-12 04:48:20 PM
That's just sad. Talk about an abuse of power.
2002-02-12 04:49:02 PM
Being late wasn't the problem.

She forgot to REWIND!!!!! Now she is looking at 5-10 years.
2002-02-12 04:49:10 PM
Whoa!! I am in deep shiat then, I better return those pornos I forgot to give back.

Wait, will I get three square meals and use of the exercise equipment in prison? If so, nevermind, come get me
2002-02-12 04:49:17 PM
Didn't I read this story somewhere else like a month ago? And in that story, didn't it happen down south somewhere? So is this story some Urban Legend/FOAF tale?
2002-02-12 04:49:59 PM
Why are they trying to be so funny with the puns and movie references? Good Lord, get a clue.
Didn't we see this a few weeks ago? This is a press release from Washington DC about a New Hampshire woman.

Yet another valid reason why the powers that be are corrupt. Shall we begin the revolution?
2002-02-12 04:50:48 PM
What? No public caning? Sheesh.
2002-02-12 04:52:02 PM
I heard this happened to some woman last Thanksgiving and she ended up spending a few days in jail because she couldn't go to court (duh it was Thanksgiving). I think this is just another Urban Legend.
2002-02-12 04:53:12 PM
"You don't return a video on time and you get treated like Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs, and end up starring in Girls in Prison -- what kind of sense does that make?" asked George Getz, the party's press secretary.

The only thing worse than those horrible references/puns, is the reference to Girls in Prison. Or maybe he's talking about Prison Girls: "Six female prisoners are given a weekend furlough to prepare them for their upcoming parole. While out, they all have miscellaneous sexual experiences, some good, some bad." Yeah, that's probably it.

"Yes, it's easy to make jokes"

Not for you, apparently.

The saga of America's Most Wanted Video Criminal started on Thursday...

2002-02-12 04:53:26 PM
Does anyone read the Onion? That guy reminds me of the gossip columnist, Jackie Harvey ...

Man - how can you take that guy seriously ... well, I guess he's just catering to yahoos anyway.
2002-02-12 04:54:19 PM
This is sad, too bad nobody gives a shiat, people only care when stuff like this happens to them or a family member.

Yet another valid reason why the powers that be are corrupt. Shall we begin the revolution?

If stuff like this keeps happening, then I give the American people another 20 -30 years before the next revolution.
2002-02-12 04:55:56 PM
This article struck me as being written by that kid in high school who though he was funny by making bad puns all the time, but wasn't.
2002-02-12 04:59:48 PM
That's a paddlin'...
2002-02-12 05:01:33 PM
I'm not really gay, but I play a homosexual in overdue video rental stings.
2002-02-12 05:02:44 PM
Crime is crime. McGruff would be so proud of this arrest, just one small step against terrorism, because movies not available for renting make angry Blockbuster customers turn to terrorism. Also drugs fund terrorism. Maybe also buying cereal. Skip breakfast, save America !!!
2002-02-12 05:02:57 PM
Daryash-Koh and MunzoMan: I checked, usually the best for debunking legend, and there's nothing like that there.
2002-02-12 05:03:14 PM
Whoa, she should move to the People's Republic of San Francisco, where we tolerate EVERYTHING public, including pee, poo, shoving needles in arms, petty theft, hustling the law-abiding folks on sidewalks and just being a real farkin nuisance. 'Late rental? HAWHAWHAW!
2002-02-12 05:04:49 PM
Was it just me, or was anyone else annoyed beyond description at some of George Getz's quotes?

"But now, the law has been dumbed down so much that if you forget to return American Pie 2 on time, you need to start plotting your Escape from Alcatraz."

Homsar, that's exactly it! That's why it annoys the fark out of me.

But all of that baggage aside, this truly deserves the asinine tag. In 40 years, I hope I'm not sent to federal "pound me in the ass" prison for neglecting to return the game manual from some lame NES game when I was 10.
2002-02-12 05:04:53 PM
Isn't staring spelled with one r? YOU DON"T GET MY VOTE
2002-02-12 05:14:59 PM
I cut up my Blockbuster card right in front of the 18yr old manager at blockbuster when I was fined for my rental being 10 days late. (fifth fine in a row)I was out of town for a week and had returned it before I left, the day after i rented it. What killed me was he said that store was particularly bad about "it".
2002-02-12 05:16:33 PM
This isn't a urban legend. I've seen it happen 2 diffrent times first hand.
2002-02-12 05:18:12 PM
I hate blockbuster (doesn't everyone?) Right now their biggest threat is, which i love. No late fees. ahhh yeah.
2002-02-12 05:21:32 PM
I was anal probed once for not rewinding.

have'nt rented much lately.
2002-02-12 05:21:39 PM
"Please be kind and rewind"?
Why do they put those stickers on DVD's? and Games?
2002-02-12 05:22:47 PM
cane the beeeatch, film it, produce vidio of it....i'll rent it at the vidiostore. and bring it back on time.
2002-02-12 05:25:42 PM
Normally, I think police brutality should be answered by cops with a few gunshots, but if they ever tried to arrest me for not returning a movie, I'd go nuts on those cops.

The thought of some cop telling me to get out of the car because I'm under arrest for abusing rental property or whatever it was makes me shiver with violence.

"What? The land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy."
2002-02-12 05:26:08 PM
I like prison movies.

"So, Jimmy, ever been in a Turkish prison?"
2002-02-12 05:26:24 PM
I'm so proud of my tax dollars right now (note, about 1/3 my paycheck) I could burst.
2002-02-12 05:26:47 PM
Because God hates you.

In my opinion, anything on the Libertarian website is automatically suspect. Not that I have anything against liberals, just against extremists.
2002-02-12 05:29:31 PM
Speaking as a Hastings Drone (Rental Store) on behalf of the Hastings Hive (Located somewhere in Texas), some of these late rental above the law cock jockeys need to be learned how rental works in the REAL WORLD. You late and you get the hot porno jail lovin'. This isn't no elementary school library so shut up and take it like a b!tch.
2002-02-12 05:34:35 PM
One of the more pretentious political descriptions is "Libertarian". People think it puts them above the fray. It sounds fashionable and, to the uninitiated, fairly dangerous.

Actually, it's just one more bullshiat political philosophy

Thanks, George
2002-02-12 05:34:52 PM
TacticalCandy: Good one. I used to work at BBVideo and I can't say how much I'd love to see this.

"M'aam this video is late, you need to pay the fee"

"No, I turned it in on time"

*begins pounding her with nightstick*
2002-02-12 05:38:12 PM
A similarly excessive example was offered in the Austin paper yesterday:

Deputy Accused of Brutal Arrests (their headline, not mine)
2002-02-12 05:43:09 PM
"Rich Phillips said he approached Taylor to ask why Watkins was being arrested and was shoved to the ground himself by the deputy. He said Taylor handcuffed him and sprayed mace in his face."

Reminds me of that scene in Little Nicky.

2002-02-12 05:50:23 PM
It was better back in the early 90s when there were more mom & pop video rental places. Back in those days---if you racked up too many late fees you just got a card to a different place. Nowadays you can only choose between Hollywood Video & Blockbuster and they're all connected with their newfangled computers.

Damn the man! Damn him!
2002-02-12 05:58:14 PM
Seems some people are still having a hard time understanding the Libertarian philosophy. Of course, some of it is too extreme for the masses, (just like the Reps and Dems) but the majority of it is EXACTLY what our Founding Fathers had in mind when they wrote the Constitution. Further explanations are available should anyone need one.

BTW--I think this arrest was bullshiat. Come on now...
2002-02-12 06:09:10 PM
So they arrest a woman for late videos, but let OJ Simpson go? How odd.

Jessie Cohen, (603) 422-0486, 139 Raleigh Way, Portsmouth, NH 03801

Give her a call, and tell her how much you love her. ;)
2002-02-12 06:53:01 PM
Will she be my Valentine?
2002-02-12 06:58:02 PM
The other article must have been on obscure store, (fark has a search engine, and I am not finding it.)

The woman involved in the previous article was wrongly accused of having an overdue video and is probably on the way to owning a video store if she aquired a good lawyer.
2002-02-12 07:23:01 PM
come on... this is stupid... she wasn't arrested for stealing a tape per se, she had a warrant for her arrest. Now the fact that she managed to get a warrant for not returning the tape is the real issue, and that's really farkin stupid.

speaking of warrants, why does everyone in Watsonville and Hollister drive like they have one? oh wait... ;)
2002-02-12 07:27:32 PM
"Not that I have anything against liberals, just against extremists."

Liberterians are not liberals and they are not conservatives either. They fall left on societal issues and right on economic issues (very pro free-market, laissez-faire, etc.) Check out their web site for their explanation.
2002-02-12 07:34:27 PM
Actually. Sleepers was a new release in 1997. And it wasn't available for sale right off the bat. I belive it was worth around $80-100 Canadian back in 1997 when it came out. But still. That's a wee bit screwy..
2002-02-12 07:47:55 PM
But she rented "Sleepers". Lock her up.
