Do you know what ground beef is?

The carcass is hung from a hook and powerwashed. What falls onto the floor is a gray slurry of meat, gristle, spinal tissue, etc. This slurry is then dyed red.

If you don't believe me, go to the butcher at your local Safeway. Ask him if eats ground beef. $100 says he doesn't.

Incidentally, Dr. Spock was against babies drinking COW'S MILK because they haven't built up antibodies and enzymes to break it down properly, not because it would necessarily give them osteoperosis later. But then, you should be careful of anything babies eat, animal related or not.

That explains the meat grinder I always see back there.

You post that assuming anyone here cares. I eat hotdogs for crying out loud.

And only some ground beef is prepared that way. A real butcher from a real butcher shop (from whom I buy all my meat)uses grade A chuck and grinds it in front of you. The little bit of extra money I spend there manifests as juicy meat flavor.

Do you know your vegetables are grown in shiat? No, you don't. Meh.

I think Dr. Spock also said to be careful of anything that eats babies. I might have read that incorrectly.

I vaguely recall an article connecting consumer spending on more processed foods to the sudden surge in "organic" sales. Does this sound at all familiar to anyone out there in Fark land?

Lloyd Dobler might have had a premonition: I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.

SuperCrackMonkey: I don't believe a word you wrote, but I still think industrial meat processing is pretty gross. That's why I buy all my meat from a neighbourhood butcher who uses scraps trimmed from all the other cuts and will grind it right in front of my eyes. I don't buy factory sausages, either.

I'm a very happy omnivore. I think animal flesh is a healthy, natural food that my body evolved to benefit from. So why would I cheat myself by buying the cheap stuff?

Butcher: It should, it was just ground this morning.

Ground Meat 101

Ground Chuck is in fact ground chuck
Ground Sirlion is in fact ground sirlion
Ground Hamburger is made from TRIM that means there's some chuck, some sirloin, some filet mignon etc, etc.

Ask the butcher which one he/she eats and it's ground hamburger.

At least they will take your order if you sign. I was at a Red Robin in Pennsylvania where they simply WOULD NOT cook a burger any lower than medium. The stupidest part was that they explained that they wouldn't serve rare or medium rare meat due to MAD COW. Idiots! Cooking cannot destroy prions.

/ on topic

There are hardly any liberals in America. Liberals want to try out new ideas, while conservatives want to preserve tradition. In this country, we have two conservative parties: the conservatives who like guns and hate gays, and the conservatives who like abortion and hate racial profiling. The true liberals will be voting for Nader or the Green Party guy.

See you next time. Try the veal.

Question for the meat-eaters... So I understand buying good-quality meat that you trust when you are shopping. How about restaurants then? I guess the really good ones use nice meat, but what about the cheap-to-chain ones? Does that affect your meat-buying preferences?

I never ate sausages/hamburger/hot dogs/mystery meat when i was a kid because i hated not knowing what it was. But then, my grandpa DID work at a sausage factory and scarred me for life at an early age with tales of "girlie, do you want ta know what parts of the pig are in that thing?"

I could ask you the same questions about how comfortable you are eating vegetables you don't pick and prepare yourself. There really is no difference. If the restaurante appears dirty I wouldn't eat the burgers or salad. If you are referring to fast food, I only eat it maybe three times a year.

I can see how your grandpa's stories would scar you though, kids are impressionable. I think my preference for meat comes from being forced to eat brussel sprouts as a child.

this isn't an uncommon practice at all. I study Hotel and restaurant management in texas. This really is no different than the egg warning or the shellfish warning/waiver of a similar nature

I know a couple who won't eat beef at restaurants but will at home if they can buy grain-fed beef (Angus).

2004-09-29 04:30:22 PM
This is nothing new, restaurants have done this for a long time, primarily when serving dishes that call for uncooked eggs, shellfish, or raw meat.

Stuff like a Caesar salad. A real Caesar salad calls for raw eggs in its dressing. Many times when you go to a restaurant and they're serving a real Caesar salad, they'll ask you to sign something to signify that you know what you're ordering and you know it's uncooked.

ok, erase the second "up".

2004-09-29 04:47:52 PM
I don't know, I think they have a point. If you order meat rare, you're taking a chance that it's not going to be thoroughly cooked, thus increasing the probability of food poisoning. That way, they absolve themselves of any blame if you do that.

I think the lack of non-pill nutrients is doing a number on your deductive capaciy, vinaysb. We're supposed to assume your word is meaningless unless you say "I promise," or "simon says?"

Everything you eat has the possibility of killing you... period. Veggies, meat, fruit... all have the potential of making you die.

SO chow down! Can't do anything about it now, so why live in misery? If I want a rare steak, GIVE IT TO ME!!!

2004-09-29 06:34:42 PM
And meat contains fresh feces when it is processed. The inside of a slaughterhouse is not a pleasant place.

Yeah, you do. And your bathroom has airbore shiat in it, too. A lot of it, considering. You ingest more fecal bacteria brushing your damned teeth every morning than I do eating a steak.

It's all farking PETA lies and propaganda...

2004-09-29 07:05:22 PM
The only thing I think I can possibly add to this debate is that in the event you consume an animal that contains the prion for mad cow, you will not die happy (well, unless the prion screws up that part of your brain). Cooking, washing, etc, none of it will rid the meat of that contamination. So, in essence, meat is technically more 'dangerous'. Now, I'm not writing to preach the virtues of vegetarinaism or what not, even though I am one, but facts rule the day.

Here in Ontario, they're going to make sushi restaurants pre-freeze all of their fish. (Much of it used to be flash-frozen, but a few types are still prepared fresh.) I'd rather sign a waiver and take my chances.

That is so wrong, so evil so... Liberal!
But then I really don't mind at the moment since:
a) I've never had really good sushi in the GTA
b) I'm currently in Tokyo where good sushi is everywhere (including supermarkets)
c) When I finally do make it back home I doubt I'll be eating sushiathere anyway.

I feel the same about raw milk cheeses, which (thanks to the insistence of my French countrymen) are still legal in Canada and require no lawyers.
Oh definitely. Some unpasturised cheeses are simply wonderful.

Bacteria and fecal matter live on the outside of meat muscles.

If you eat a steak, then the inside is bacteria-free so it's safe to have it underdone, as long as the surface is cooked enough.

If you eat a beefburger made from GROUND beef, then all the bacteria and fecal matter have been mushed up throughout the burger. So it's not safe to eat it underdone.
