I used to be able to pick tumbler type bike locks, but was too chicken to steal anything.

It was only a matter of time... first laptop locks, then bicycle locks, then the world. Good thing I don't like tubular locks and don't have anything that uses them.

/Oh noes! Someone killed the Bic man! Fatality!

He seems to be really scared about his kids getting his guns.

Guess he better start talking nicer to 'em real quick like.

Where does it say anything about Coke machines? Misleading link.

Disk brake locks on motorcycles too...

2004-09-25 11:10:06 AM
Who else is going out to buy dozens of these pens before they're recalled?

2004-09-25 11:10:16 AM
The guy should calm down, if the kids were going to kill
him, they would have choked him to death by now, or put
some dirt in his toothpaste.

When I was in Germany in the 80's, all the locks that were used on storage on base could all be bypassed with a paper clip--apparently a "safety" feature in case of real emergency, or the lack of the proper key/NCOIC. In high school, I learned a trick to tumble MasterLock combination locks with a piece of wire. Nothing new here, just another in ceaseless evolution of design versus environment. Soon enough, when the problem gets fixed, another enterprising person will come along and learn how to bust that...and hopefully be hired on by a firm to use their powers of intrusion for good.

anybody tried this with steering lock or brake pedal lock in a car?

...

Im guessing well be seeing Bic pens sticking out of vending machines, pay phones and file cabinets all over the place, he said.

Admittedly, "Coke" and "vending" aren't identical, but as "Coke" is a subset of "vending", I think it's close enough to discount the "misleading" tag.

2004-09-25 11:25:37 AM
dang..now im gonna have to try it. What lock to pick first hmmm

2004-09-25 11:26:07 AM
It's actually true, read it in another article somewhere last week. Anything with a cylindrical key is vulnerable. Bike locks, pop machines, gun cabinets...let your imagination run wild!

Well, since the article was about a gun safe and not a vending machine, I still think it's miselading, even if they all use tubular locks.

Personally, I find the ability to unlock a gun safe much more disturbing than unlocking a vending machine.

From the article: "The man asked that only his first name, Mark, be used in this article, fearing that publishing his identity and the fact that he has guns in his home could invite trouble."

I thought guns make you safer?

Ah, just kidding. Got nothing against guns, and think it's good that this guy is putting a lot of effort in keeping them out of his kids' hands.

And because no one has said it yet...

"If you outlaw bic pens, only outlaws will have bic pens."

Colonel "Bat" Guano still prefers his M1-Carbine method.

Bhruic. Okay, I'm a dumbass, always read all the way to the bottom of the article.

Still, I would have played up the gun safe story before the vending machine if I were the submitter.

... at least my coin-op washing machine lid, payphone coin release mechanism and reverse postage hacks are still safe... =P

Ironically, you can also use a gun to open a pen cabinet.

Be back in 15 mins. Went to OfficeMax to get... uh... supplies. Also will be getting some soda for the office, free guns and bicycles on the way back.

I thought I was going to learn how to break into a Coke machine.

Misleading headlines make me a very sad panda.

2004-09-25 12:10:50 PM
why break into them... just spit water through a straw into the dollar bill collector and it'll short out.... giving you masses of coke... plus change back.

2004-09-25 12:12:34 PM
vegasj

That stopped working years ago, and it was saltwater.

2004-09-25 12:13:11 PM
hmmm... regular water worked a few times.... so , er,.... I heard

2004-09-25 12:13:54 PM
...but yeah, that was years ago... like over 7

2004-09-25 12:16:43 PM
It was good times while it worked though, I remember snack machines that used to have bad springs in the little flap the folds up when you reach in for your candy, so you could force it back down and reach the bottom two rows of crap. Grab the springs and they popped right out, raining down goodies.

2004-09-25 12:20:29 PM
Oh.......crap!

/don't ask why.

2004-09-25 12:22:10 PM
I love picking locks. My roommate locked his keys in his room the other day and was freaking out. I had his room unlocked in about 5 minutes. Now he doesn't bother locking the door cause he figures if I did care enough it wouldn't stop me.

2004-09-25 12:23:11 PM
This is why almost all vending machines have an additional hinge installed with a padlock on the side. I don't know why this is news - I was doing this 15 years ago to play games on a 286 at school when they would lock the computers after class.

2004-09-25 12:28:28 PM
Given how many vending machinecompanies are mob run, well, I'd be real careful about breaking into them. Just sayin

To see how the pen in the lock works go to link(NSFW)!!!

The headline is a little misleading, most vending machines require the tumbler to be rotated 270degrees and require all the pins to remain at their split points for the entiretity of the rotation. These types of locks are designed for a resisting all but the most determined thieves and vandals....

2004-09-25 01:13:43 PM
I used three different kinds of pens, he said. I need to be thorough. Ive got three kids living in my house.

Does this mean I can't use any pens as I do not have any kids living in my house?

/where's my wife? we need to start making kids so I can start protecting myself... from... them...

2004-09-25 01:15:07 PM
This story has 2 endings: People won't be buying barrel locks and pic will be selling more pens.

2004-09-25 01:30:58 PM
time to raise the price on Bic pens, methinks.

Bic [tm], the Swiss Army Pen

2004-09-25 01:32:15 PM
I've tried it on a coke machine. It doesn't work because the barrel rotates many, MANY times which prevents the pen from doing anything.

2004-09-25 01:40:59 PM
What? You mean locks can be picked? Ahhhhhhhhh!!

2004-09-25 01:44:43 PM

Has anyone tried picking their Chastity Belt locks (safe?) yet?
