In Orlando, a lawsuit was filed against a rental car company by the estate of a woman who was killed in a car crash by an Irish drunk driver. The suit alleges that the rental car company should be liable for the woman's death because the company "either knew or should have known about the unique cultural and ethnic customs in Ireland which involve the regular consumption of alcohol at pubs as a major component to Irish social life."

This one is rich.

A Virginia inmate sued himself for $5 million because he got drunk and violated his religious beliefs causing him to commit a crime. Of course the inmate didn't have $5 million so he wanted the state to pick up the tab

Jesus. Can't blame a guy for trying can you?

2002-02-09 03:48:29 AM
I say, give that $1.5 mil to the guy who broke his dick in a toilet just so long as he can never reproduce.

Even I am embarassed by that story (penis and toilet), but as a canadian, not as a person with a penis. TMI?
At the time, it was farking funny.

*brain implodes*
Oh america, *shakes head*, for SHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME!

The legal system won't change itself, they all want to keep their jobs, the more lawsuits the better. But will the Gov ever have the balls to change things before it gets so out of control that your economy collapses?

I doubt it, but making the loser pay the court costs would be a start.

I should be mentioned that frivolous suits like this get thrown out immediately. I know there are anecdotes about bad ones that succeed, but I would say there often extenuating circumstances you don't know about that can't be explained in a one paragraph summary. Take any of these cases at face value (the on about Yemen owning Mars) and they are obviously ridiculous and get nowhere. Lawyers who file patently frivolous lawsuits get disbarred. People who make a habit of filing their own frivilous claims can be refused from filing more without judicial approval, so the lunatics can't just keep doing it everyday.

I think a good start would to make it illegal for lawyers to advertise on TV. How farking great would that be!

Before I get flamed, I agree that pople file stupid lawsuits for stupid reasons far too regularly. The courts are set up to mediate legitimate disputes, not to make people rich if they don't like their concert tickets. In that case, though th notion of punitive damages is legitimate in that it gives an incentive for the perpetrator not to do it again, it would be better served as a class action for the millions who have been ripped off by Ticketmaster. But for that to b the suit, she shouldn't sue for bad seats, but instead their unfair practices such as a monopoly.

Sam-I-Am, The headline is fine: the US Gross National product for 2000 was about $10,000,000,000,000. The National Debt was about half that. I just thought it would be better to go with the highest recognizable figure.

By the way: First...Post...Ever!

Didn't Al Bundy once try to sue someone for $6 Gazillion dollars?

2002-02-09 09:14:09 AM
People that sue for no reason (like the morons on this link)deserve to have the shiat kicked out of them.
I was an insurance adjuster and people were going to sue me all the time. Let me tell you. The insurance companies don't give a shiat if you get a lawyer. It actually makes it easier on the adjuster cause he just waits on the lawyer to get his shiat together.

They then went on to sue the lawyer that helped them with their lawsuit for obvious sterotyping and racism.

Not only that, it's larger than the entire net worth of America. Probably larger than the entire net worth of the world.
