This should have an "obvious" tag.

I don't know why but I am thinking this is a repeat.

2002-02-08 08:39:26 AM
It all depends on who you sin with.
2002-02-08 08:43:23 AM
I thought the sin=sickness gig belonged to the Christian Scientists.
On a related note, what heinous crime against God earned the Pope his Parkinson's disease?
2002-02-08 08:43:26 AM
wanking is a sin and it makes you blind
2002-02-08 08:44:49 AM
I claim religion causes illness. Just ask any of those 50.000.000 Africans who didn't use a condom cuz the pope said so.

The Pope... he makes Hitler and Stalin look like amateurs.

*cough* *cough* *ugh*

Well hell, no wonder.....
2002-02-08 08:56:53 AM
I'm one sick little monkey.
2002-02-08 09:01:46 AM
Does sin cause impotence too?
2002-02-08 09:02:14 AM
Ah, the old joke...

"People who don't sin live, longer."
"Serve's them right."
2002-02-08 09:03:33 AM
I wonder how he explains that nuns have the highest rates of breast cancer then?
2002-02-08 09:03:53 AM
Hmmm, I've been really sick for the last week. I wonder what I did wrong?
Oh yea, does "spilling the seed" count? No wonder.
2002-02-08 09:09:42 AM
When did the Catholic church merge with Scientology?
2002-02-08 09:09:54 AM
It's not "the Vatican" as an entity that made this claim, just this archbishop Cordes. Note that the article cites two other priests who disagreed with him.
2002-02-08 09:13:37 AM
Mani The majority of Africans are Muslim....

A bunch of deluded old geezers arguing about fairy tale based nonsense.
2002-02-08 09:26:08 AM
I think the Vatican needs to be [image from too old to be available]
2002-02-08 09:30:10 AM
These farking morons drive me nuts. THe church has a long history of this type of bullshiat.

They used to tell people that both the plague and smallpox were the result of sin. Just go to church and everything will be allright. And no, of course the fact that your sewage runs into your water supply has absolutely nothing to do with it.

These people dserve to be darwinised out of existence...
2002-02-08 09:33:08 AM
Those wacky, nutty, zany Catholics!
2002-02-08 09:35:38 AM
I wonder if they go see doctors...

In any case, since I don't believe in god, and therefore cannot sin (since it's all fabricated silliness) then I should never get sick!

yeah, that makes sense.
2002-02-08 09:50:23 AM
This is BS, the Pope is in and out of the hospital all the time, is he a sinner?
2002-02-08 09:52:05 AM
So according to Catholic mythos, babies are born sick(original sin)?
2002-02-08 09:57:39 AM
So much for the germ theory of disease. Now if we could just start printing calendars that read the year 1500, maybe we can make these silly religious people happy.
2002-02-08 10:23:40 AM
"Jesus heals sickness and banishes sin," he said. "He therefore teaches us that there is a link between sin and illness.

Ahh the old 'confusing cause and effect' fallacy. I have coffee every morning. People die of cancer every morning. Ergo, my drinking coffee causes people to die of cancer. Those wacky christians.
2002-02-08 10:35:32 AM
On the other hand, there are certainly links between Sloth, Gluttony, and Wrath to quite a number of sicknesses.
Frankly, the original statement looks to me like a horrible misstatement. Christianity has always held a connection between sin (in the big, grand, sense - all of the sin throughout history) and all kinds of corruptions - of the body, of society, even of the natural world. It's a wholistic view that our actions affect our world.
I find it difficult to believe that anyone who held the position "refraining from all sin can keep you healthy" could reach a high position even in this conservative Vatican.
2002-02-08 10:53:22 AM
Christians are idiots.

If God knows EVERYTHING. As in EVERYTHING that will happen, and everything that has happened..

Why did he create Hitler, Genghis, Ceasar, Laden, and Bush?

He knew they would fark shiat up. If he knows EVERYTHING, why would he create someone knowing that they will spend an eternity in burning damnation after they die? I thought he was a loving God.

You blind, dumb-founded bible-thumpers.
2002-02-08 10:54:10 AM
The catholic church "would" be the ones to know about sickness.

The sick farkers......
2002-02-08 11:31:10 AM
oh, you and your stories. Sin causes illness. Beer kills brain cells. Now lets go to that.. building thingie.. where our beds.. and tv is.
2002-02-08 11:49:02 AM
Whollychao: Looks like you've stumbled across the cure for cancer. No more coffee for you...
2002-02-08 12:23:48 PM
Which came first the sin or the sickness? Most sins in the Old Testament seem only to exist to prevent illness. Cut the foreskin off (before modern cleansing habits it would commonly get infected), don't eat pork (gives you trichinosis). Then look at all the things that would make a person unclean and how those things are connected to the spread of disease.

Chris Rock did a sketch on this. It goes something along the lines that before refrigeration a pork chop could kill you. So to stop people from eating pork, you tell them God doesn't want them eating pork. Problem solved.

Other than that their is no connection between Santa Clause's decreed sins and illness...

Whoops! I mean god's decreed sins and illness.
2002-02-08 12:28:13 PM
Why do they always post this stuff about Catholics anyway. So the pope is against sin...surprise - surprise.
2002-02-08 12:39:56 PM
We shake our fists and say "Good golly we're mad" that God kills children with our very own hands.
I'm not aware of a single human-perpetrated evil that coudl not have been prevented by any number of other humans who had the ability and information needed to act. Don't blame (or dismiss) God for letting Hitler be. Blame Chamberlain and Petain.
Frankly, I've never found reason to conclude 2 billion people were all idiots just because they look at the world in a different way than me. Guess I'm just not as smart as you.
2002-02-08 12:44:10 PM
Holy shiat what a new and original disproof of God! My faith is waning as I type this...
2002-02-08 01:45:38 PM

I'll take "things I didn't need to know" for $500.
2002-02-08 02:27:29 PM
Based on the Christian bible, God knows what will happen. God is omnipotent and omnicient.

So he KNEW that the most beautiful angel, Lucifer, would turn on him. He KNEW that the serpent would persaude Eve into devouring the forbidden fruit, causing millions of good humans "not saved my the lord jesus christ" to burn in an eternity of hell fire.

So he knew hitler would kill millions of Jews.. What a GREAT WONDERFUL GOD!!

Your God is a hateful, vengeful God.
2002-02-08 02:41:15 PM
The vatican makes me ill.
2002-02-08 02:42:57 PM
It is one thing to disagree with people, but I notice something in these threads that surprises me. There are many who simply hate christians. They hate them intensely. They hate them more than a difference of opinion would warrant. They have a perspective that seems to indicate that chrisitianity is responsible for the world's problems. I suspect that these people are also the ones who hate western civ. generally. I find it odd that of all the evils in the world that christians would be the thing that gets there blood boiling. I am not jewish or muslim or communist, but I don't hate these people. It says something about there personalities, I am just not sure what.
2002-02-08 02:52:46 PM

You omit one salient feature of God: He also made man (and the angels) in His "image and likeness," that is, with FREEWILL. He also created the dynamism within which living beings MUST work out their individual choices: a MORAL universe/habitat.

Choices therefore have consequences.

Lucifer, Eve, Hitler CHOSE their fate out of FREEWILL.

Your assumption that God is somehow "evil" because HE made things the way they are admits to the fact that you would have had God make robots instead of beings with freewill. BUT ... there's a catch there if He had done so: there would be NO opportunity for Love which is entirely a matter and function of FREEWILL. Also, without FREEWILL, there would be NO risk of vice and NO chance for virtue.

But, of course, maybe you'd rather have been created a robot!

Louisville Slugger,
I am a supporter and enjoyer of western civilization. I was also once a christian. I don't necessarily hate a person because they are a christian or catholic, what I do hate is their churches, and any member of their congregation that acts in one or more ways I find dispicable (many of which would be associated with what some call "fundies"). Once they commit one of those acts, I do hate them, though. These acts do include baptising of children and training them to believe in their house of cards before they are an adult and can choose for themselves, which unfortunately includes most of the congregation members that have children.
2002-02-08 02:58:32 PM
Oh, boy, the bigoted anti-Catholic scum is out in force today!
2002-02-08 03:02:55 PM
i'm a devout Christian but I hate Falwell, Chick, Roberson, etc. They're all a bunch of morons who give Christianity a bad name. Notice how most misinformed Christian-bashers on here assume that most of us are teh pompous, ignorant zealots. Hell, I don't even go to church and I think I'm a better Christian for it. When I went, it was more of a chore than anything. Now that I'm on my own I've made my own choices and have found and studied the religion in my own way; meaning I actually understand it and myself. Which is unlike the inbred fundie farkers.

Hell, fundies are probably minions of Satan anyway. THey turn off more people than they convert.
2002-02-08 03:08:53 PM
There's nothing bigotted about hating those who dispense fear and depravity on other humans and seek advancement by psychological attacks.
2002-02-08 03:14:42 PM
Does the hate that you all feel extend to those like Mother Teresa or Martin Luther King? Surely Mother Teresa believed in raising children "in the faith" as did MLK. In fact, that would include Lincoln, et al. Despite allegations otherwise, many christians lead sober, productive and relatively happy lives. My observation is that many cynics do not.
2002-02-08 03:15:12 PM
God is impotent? poor guy.
2002-02-08 03:16:54 PM
Natax, BTW, does that position extend to those who use those tactics to extend PC? No flame intended....It is just an all to common tactic for any position advanced
