I'm confused about something...

As I understand it, it is possible for labs to synthesize (or extract, perhaps) tetrahydracannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana. While I'm sure that the "hit" from a pill is less potent and has a slower onset, surely it would be as efficacious as smoking a joint and have fewer side effects?

Can somebody shed some light on this matter?

Actually, the complaints of people using Marinol are mostly about them being 'too stoned'. The nice thing about smoked or vaporized pot is that one can meter the dosage as it's being 'administered'.

Oh, did I mention the situation is a crock of shiat? I remember this happening on DC a few years back. The vote was 60% or so in favor of med-mj but the vote was nullified. Farking US politicians. Glad I live in Canada. But then again, the medical approval process is as much a crock of shiat. The last thing I need is a politician telling me the evils of a drug that saves my life every day. Morons.

Washington, D.C. - Taxation Without Representation. There was a movement to have that put on the license plates. It's completely wrong, and I'd love to see the citizens circle the Capitol and refuse to allow Congress to leave until this is changed.

Timothy: There is a marijuana 'pill' made from synthetic THC. It's called Marinol (generic: dronabinol) and is given to cancer patients and similar, for nausea and pain relief, just like medical marijuana. There are some serious problems with Marinol compared to smoked marijuana, though. Chief among these is the fundamental problem with giving someone a _pill_ for severe nausea. It takes 2 to 3 hours for the pill to kick in.. and if you can keep a pill down for 2 to 3 hours, then you probably don't have severe nausea.

Second problem is that compared to smoked THC, it packs a PUNCH. (This is just what I've read, I've never seen it) Patients report being so high they're incapacitated for upwards of 24 hours. Stoners know that if you're that high, it's rather unpleasant.. imagine how that would be for someone who's more interested in the medicinal effects than the high. This has led some paranoid (heh) medical marijuana advocates to accuse the government of 'poisoning the well' by giving THC a bad name with Marinol. At any rate, it's not widely prescribed or used (or abused!).

our government is so hypocritical . . . politicians are afraid to legalize pot because so many of them smoke it. if pot was legal and they started smoking it in public, it would totally embaress and belittle the government.

It's supposed to be humorous. (I thought it quite amusing when I first heard it!) The idea is that, to a large extent, it seems that Libertarians have a largely conservative bent, less taxes, less government spending, but unlike Republicans proper, they are vigorously in favor of applying laisez faire principles not just to business entities, but to individuals as well. Up to and including such things as letting individuals make their own choices about recreational drug use, prostitution, etc.
Not sure if you really didn't get it, or you take exception.

This guy depresses me a lot. Lincoln was a complete teetotaller, yet vehemently opposed prohibition. Why? Because he was not letting his personal biases dictate his public policy making. AT NO POINT in this guy's thinking does he sit down and say to himself "hang on a minute, I am actually about to stop people from voting" when the issue at hand is his personal opinion that marijuana is bad.
