Pathetic.

2004-09-08 12:24:33 PM
Oopsie!

2004-09-08 12:24:43 PM
What the hell is NASA's problem lately? When did they become a bunch of bumbling idiots?

2004-09-08 12:24:50 PM
that sux, oh well back to work

2004-09-08 12:24:58 PM
el low el.

2004-09-08 12:25:12 PM
Awesome headline! :)

Anyway, the spacecraft was flying in outer space for three years, and spent most of its time being bombarded with extreme heat and radiation. So, something not working upon its return is a very likely event.

Also, NASA is not a big waste of our tax dollars. Without the developments and discoveries of NASA astronauts and engineers over the last 50 years, we would be nowhere near the level of technological sophistication that we are at right now.

"Proving ground" indeed.

2004-09-08 12:25:21 PM
Your scientific, particle-gathering space pod asplode!

2004-09-08 12:25:24 PM
Please stop complaining that this is the same as the other thread.

That thread is about the webcast, which turned into a thread about watching it crash.

This thread is about the news item that was born when it crashed.

Was the guy who packed the parachute named pancake?

2004-09-08 12:26:06 PM
Pfft. Big deal. Everyone KNOWS that the only way to get accurate information about space is with vigorous, frequent anal probing.

At least that's what Astronomy professor, Father Flanagan, taught me.

Is a live spacecraft anything like ordinance?

2004-09-08 12:26:08 PM
Holy crap! Drew!!11!oen!11!purple!

D'oh!

2004-09-08 12:26:29 PM
But did it land on Kenny Loggins?
/mst3k the movie

2004-09-08 12:26:34 PM
Man, I miss the days when NASA used to get things right.

Free tradjectory return around the moon is childsplay compared to this.

And um...remember the mars rovers?

2004-09-08 12:26:49 PM
Priceless. Can we get a real space agency now?

2004-09-08 12:26:56 PM
Is it just me, or does that look like the same piece of land where they filmed the "moon landings"?

/tinfoil hat on, 'cos they already have black helicopters out there

But did it land on Kenny Loggins?

Service Engine Soon? I wonder what that's all about?

2004-09-08 12:27:32 PM
Big bada boom.

2004-09-08 12:27:39 PM
I told you so!

Is that an audioedit contest I hear?

2004-09-08 12:28:27 PM
"This is Russian space program type stuff. "

Dude, you got it backwards. When it comes to space, the russians are the only ones that have a clue.

The rest of the world is blowing up and crashing all over the place.

2004-09-08 12:28:35 PM
Another 256 mln $ grounded (thank God US bucks, not German ones).....kinda ironic...at least all of the engineers used feet as a measure and didn't mix it with the metric system....would have been one hell of a impact. Very sad though for all the scientists. It's like denting Dad's car on arrival at home from a loooooong trip

2004-09-08 12:28:48 PM
These NASA guys seriously need to get their act together.

/Why does NASA hate america?

2004-09-08 12:28:51 PM
I call shenanigans.

2004-09-08 12:29:09 PM
Man oh man.
Crashed with some funky stuff from the cosmos.

Jeez, the whole thing whiffs of The Andromeda Strain.

2004-09-08 12:29:11 PM
Damnit.

Yeah. Their "contigency plan" was only for "what if the helicopter couldn't snag it", not "what if the capsule smashes into the desert floor at re-entry speed."

All of it, lost. :(

2004-09-08 12:29:21 PM
You are in command now, Admiral Piett!

2004-09-08 12:29:23 PM
that sucks. I was looking forward to finding out who killed Dr. Reyga.

2004-09-08 12:29:26 PM
That was one of the coolest fark-ups I've ever seen.

2004-09-08 12:29:41 PM
Once more with feeling:

HA! HA!
/Was this really unexpected?

2004-09-08 12:29:54 PM
Best. Headline. Ever.

2004-09-08 12:29:55 PM
My taxpayer share of the crater comes to about $0.09 for approx. 1/2 square cm.

Now get off my land.

2004-09-08 12:30:00 PM
Well, at least now we know that a 500 lbs spacecraft worth millions of dollars crashing at terminal speed makes a very unimpressive hole in the ground.

2004-09-08 12:30:01 PM
Batteries not included? NOW they tell me.

I'm no rocket surgeon, but I would poke it with a stick, or maybe chuck a rock at it and run away.

2004-09-08 12:30:06 PM
Keep in mind we're spending $1 billion on the Iraq "effort" every 2 days, so NASA has yet to join the big leagues when it comes to wasting taxpayer money.

2004-09-08 12:30:09 PM
If it's dead, I hope they give it a proper burial.
I mean, just kick the rest of the dirt over it.

2004-09-08 12:30:13 PM
They spent over 1/2 a billion dollars to get some sun atoms? Why the hell didn't they ask me? I've got jars full of them that I collected on my patio this summer. They could've had them for, say a million a jar?

2004-09-08 12:30:19 PM
Well, that is nice of NASA, gonna fly in the recovery team rather than making them drive. So see, something did come out of this, some Scientists get to ride in a chopper and go WEEEEEEEEEEE...

2004-09-08 12:30:23 PM
I watched that sucker come down and it looked like it was in pieces.

2004-09-08 12:30:28 PM
So... Why couldn't these particals be passively collected from some instrument mounted off the International Space Station and then shuttled back to earth with an astronaut??

Did it have to be a $260 faliure??

We'll never know because humans are dumb and inefficient.

I think that the crash was caused by a failure in the Blast Processor

2004-09-08 12:31:21 PM
Dugway Proving Ground....

The capsule proved it could be dug way into the ground.

2004-09-08 12:31:25 PM
Am I the only one that feels loss for when something like this happens?
