The broadcaster said a tsunami measuring up to 1 meter (3 feet) may have already hit the Pacific coast.

Why the heck is this worth mentioning? There were 3 ft. set waves consistently this morning...call me when Japan sends us something over-head.

/waiting for Hurricane Howard

Wasn't this supposed to hit California?

I was dumbfounded why they mentioned a 20-in. tsunami in the first article too. Twenty inches? Oooo, scary.

2004-09-05 01:00:44 PM
Seriously, how would you notice? Especially once it's in the open ocean, wouldn't it just get lost in all the much bigger swells? I'm confused...

Japan's getting a pacific rim job

2004-09-05 01:04:54 PM

oh shiat! in other news, San Francisco readying itself for the Big One. when asked how they plan to respond to a serious earthquake, San Francisco replies: "what earthquake?"

I felt these in Osaka. I was underground during the first one. Pretty scary.

Good farking story, I know.

Japan is about to fall into the ocean?

Little old ladies will be falling over all across Japan.
Think of the little old ladies!

If they would put a cap on the Richter scale, it would put a stop to all this one earthquakeupmanship. Damn tectonic plates always trying to outdo each other.

As the Nipponese would say...Che!

(shiat!)

I'll bet the Japanese Princess is VERY upset... just as she's getting her mental poo together, an earthquake comes and shakes her all up.

Bummer for her.

I thought 'kuso' was Japanese for shiat(crap or damnit)?

Anyway, I hope no precious video games get destroyed.

I think most people are misinformed about tsunamis. They are waves that grow huge once they hit land. Think of a wave travelling under water (sounds kind of like a misnomer), and once the ocean depth decreases, this wave hits this land shelf and rises up in the air, becomes big, etc etc.

You could say it sort of appears out of nowhere.

So.. "Seriously, how would you notice? Especially once it's in the open ocean, wouldn't it just get lost in all the much bigger swells? I'm confused..."

You most likely wouldn't see the tsunami until it hits land. It'd be like a 3 foot wave appearing out of nowhere.

// That's what they taught us in school!

2004-09-05 01:54:54 PM
Without bothering to google for the truth, I would guess that three-foot wave would also be traveling considerably fast (40-100 mph? Just guessin')

2004-09-05 01:56:28 PM
Methinks that this may have some relation to the predicted CA quake that was supposed to occur. Perhaps this is only a precursor to the CA quake?

Not funny using the same headline joke twice

2004-09-05 02:36:06 PM
Wow! I was playing FFXI right when the quake hit! While it was knocking all my pictures off the wall, I was torn between healing up my party or ducking under the table.

<hardcore>

I kept playing.

Che!

There is no natural writing for 'che' in Japanese, it is only used for foreign words and written like so: which doesn't even follow the conventions for adding a smaller character for a different sound.

YodaTuna is correct, 'kuso' is probably the best-known form for shiat/damnit.

Dictionary says: kuso (hiragana) kuso (kanji) [Crude for daiben (kanji) shiat

/Doesn't really know much slang

2004-09-05 02:58:59 PM
Well, Jeffrey's dictionary says that "che" is an interjection similar to "shiat!", but I'm guessing it doesn't literally mean shiat the way kuso does. Correct me if I'm wrong.

first the tidal waves were 20 inches.....not they are 3 feet....in Japan that means flee flee.....in California that means Surfs up Dudes.....earthquakes bad yes...but dont mention a freakin tidal wave unless its an actual wall of water..not the wood trim around the base of said wall

Strong quake hits Kinki region

/hehe

Whilst "che" isn't a "natural" sound it does exist in Japanese as a sort of exclamation. Not as strong as "kuso" (and remember to keep both vowel sounds short, otherwise it will sound as if you are saying "daydreams"), and more like "Meh" in meaning. Like if things don't work out the way you want them to.

/threadjack off

And about this "three feet ain't news" attitude. I live in a small fishing village and woke up this morning to find all the fish hatcheries and shellfish farms riped from their anchors and drifting aimlessly about the bay while their owners tried to catch them and get them back in place. Oh, and a three foot wave is apparently enough to overturn fishing vessels, as I also saw today.

Respect the tsunami.

And "Che" is a great interjection.

OK - Fark people! Read Bill Bryson's book called "a short history about almost everything"
They are actually predicting that Japan will be devoured by volcanic activity and tectonic plate shifting. It's really scary some of the things that Geoligists are waiting for. Meteors crashing into the earth killing all living things/golbal warming and/or cooling causing complete extinction . . .
You get the idea. Apparently Japan is thousands of years overdo for a catastrophic earthquake. So I guess all I have to say is "Watch this drive."

Great, our place got one at 7PM, then at midnight. A glass fell off and broken, but nothing bad. And the people say that the local area is due for a M8 this decade or something. I miss the States.
/at least you have a slight chance of escaping a tornado where i lived before
