Stem cells aren't banned. It's only gov't funding that wasn't available until a year ago. We've been doing stem cell work for 20 years. My best friend just got a vein in his leg replaced with a new vein grown from stem cell skin. All that is new is the political issue taking a front seat.

Stem cell research is so f'ing stupid.

So don't tell the Lefty Dems that medical science uses nuclear medicine or they'll outlaw that, or burn the hospitals down to make a statement.

You want your stem cell research? Here's what you do: go get a big pile of money, go kill your own babies, get your PhD (probably should do that first...before killing the babies...lest they spoil on you), and research stem cells 'til your heart is content.

Oh, and stop biatching that the gov't isn't paying for it. Otherwise, you can show me the part of the Constitution where the Founders wrote that the gov't is responsible for funding all scientific research.

Stem cell research isn't "banned," you dumbasses, as evidenced by THIS STORY. Or did you think these guys just suddenly had a flash of inspiration and came up with this idea without so much as a petri dish?

Stem cells are what is called a "wedge issue" in politics: a tool that a party can use to beat up on the opposition. Republicans do it with crime, national security, and taxes. Democrats do it with abortion, gay rights, and gun control. And now stem cells. You're expected to react emotionally and disengage your brain when one of these hot button issues comes up. Knock it off and get your facts straight instead of just repeating whatever talking point your party has dreamed up this week.

The scariest thing I can imagine is for the State to have control of science. Truly spooky.
It should be, and mostly is, a private business affair.
That scares me too. The day Abbott Labs cures cancer, who will be able to afford it?

No easy answers.

2004-09-05 11:09:04 AM
mr_bunny, the day a lab cures cancer is the day the federal government seizes control of said technology by demand of the general public. That's one thing I think most of the American population would, unfortunately, stand for.

The health care industry is a weird thing. If a company came up with a cure to cancer and decided to maximize their profits , it would be a very expensive cure and certainly the very poor would not be able to afford it.

Now, I could be wrong, but isn't "life" one of our inalienable rights? Denying a cure to a fatal disease not based on the actual cost of the cure, but the price set to maximize profit seems like you're denying a fundamental right to another person in order to profit. Where is THAT in the constitution?

I don't know what the right thing to do is with health care. I don't trust the industry or the government with it. But it's not like other industries - if someone makes a nice TV and overprices it, screw em I'll go without. But if someone figures out how to cure alzheimer's and prices it out of the reach of a good fraction of the population... thats farked.

Too bad they're still banninated.

Maybe they're banned on Vendaz's home planet of Moronica, but here on earth the research continues. There are limits on government funding of embrionic stem cell research. Probably because embrionic stem cells are 100% lethal when injected into labratory rats and mice.

Embrionic stem cell research is something that the Clinton administration refused to fund, but I don't hear any whining over that.

Get a clue before opening your yap.

It is a vexing question for me. I'm a rabid Libertarian who believes that the less government intervention the better off we are.
Having said that, 'Promote the general welfare' could mean lots of things. It's something I've found myself on the fence about many many times. I don't like the idea of publicly funded healthcare, but I don't want to end up with a 3rd mortgage because I got Aids and needed the cure from some corporation.

Like I said, no truly easy answers. Though if I came up with the cure, I would sell it just above cost enough to get really rich without screwing everyone. Fair is fair.
I guess.

"Probably because embrionic stem cells are 100% lethal when injected into labratory rats and mice."

No, that's why treatments using embryonic stem cells are not FDA approved. The potential for effective treatments is why RESEARCH needs to be done. If it was already safe and effective it'd be way past the research phase.

Are you perhaps from one of Moronica's sister planets?

The part you are skiping over is Liberty and the right to private property.

The state does not own you. If I came up with the cure to cancer tomorrow, but decided not to tell anyone what it was, no one has the right to force me. If you think differently, you just don't understand Liberty. They government does not own you or me.

So if I decide to sell it at 2 million a dose, that's none of your business.

Owning your own life is the right. This does not give you the right to steal from others to make your life more comforatble or longer.

It's not that the government isn't paying for it that bothers me, but rather that the government is paying for research on a selective basis. Ideally they shouldn't be paying for it at all, but if they are going to they can't let silly political reasons dictate what recieves the stolen money. And I'm not sure what sort of research you are talking about, but I've never heard of dead babies being involved in stem cell research.

The drug industry has nothing to fear from the conquest of cancer. Those that think there's a conspiracy afoot to quash research are in the tinfoil-hat crowd.

The big bucks are to be made from all the prescptions that the aging poulation require. They are doing a great job marketing these pills. Once you hit 50, you can expect a new script every 2 or three years. My wife has 6 already, my mother has about 15!! At leat 25 pills. Her day must be organized around what pill is taken when.

Cancer vanquished? More people live longer to take your Valium, Paxodyl, Zoloft and other high-profit meds.

Stem cell-therapy will just be another way to keep people alive so they need more of these meds.

Pharmacueticals. It's where the big bucks are. If you are in HS now, my advice is to aim for a career there. Regardless of whether or not governments fund the research, it's gonna happen. Follow the money.

Is there not a reason that the inalienable rights are listed in the order they are?

Life is fundamental. If you discovered the cure for cancer and didn't tell anyone, it'd be incredible immoral. Should the government do anything about it? Maybe not, but if I knew, I would happily kill you to get it and distribute it. Millions of lives vs. one man's life and property. Easy call for me.

Now if you had a really nice car and I wanted it, that's a different story. No lives on the line. I respect your right to the property.

They have everything to fear from the prevention of cancer. they have nothing to fear from more research into expensive treatments for cancer.

This morning, I don't really believe in "ownership".
There is just stuff. There is a lot of matter in the world.
We humans occasionally decide it is ours.
The reality is that ownership only matters so far as you can enforce it, or as far as the government chooses to enforce it.
It is an arbitrary status assigned to matter by people.
That doesn't mean I don't like owning things, it just
means that it is not some god-given universal law of nature that nobody can take from you.

Of course, my opinion on this will probably be different once I wake up.

I'm a rabid objectivist. :) And I can tell you, just because someone has something you want or even need badly, it does not give you the right to take it by force.

Let's take your argument and substitute one thing. What if instead of "cure for X" you put in food. Does everyone on the planet have the "right" to come here and steal everything we have at the point of a gun so that they can eat?

If you do not protect Liberty and private property in a principled manner, then the rule of law has no meaning. How much of your life you own will always come down to the rule of force and the mob. Always.

I don't know about that. Imagine the tagline for a business that could tack on this to every ad:

'From the folks that cured cancer, we bring you:'

Talk about being loved by people.

Stem cells do have the ability to bring forth some interesting science. A new larynx? No problem.
Lost a leg? We'll grow you one.
Pesky occular cancer getting you down? No problem.

I just can't understand why people wouldn't want mankind
to achieve that level of scientific sophistication.

Any fundies out there want to explain why God wants people to suffer?

Is the gun already chambered and cocked? Cause I'm pretty fast... I keed I keed.

Wait 30 years. Ever hear of Monsanto? Soon they will own the grain market. Not some of it, not most of it, all of it.
Price will be set by them, and people will starve.
Do we have the right to take it from them, not yet.
When they start screwing everyone, then yeah I think we will. But that is another story. Kinda.
