Good for him. I have a Browning Over and Under by my bed.

/feelin' safe

Oh, but what about the poor burgler's rights? He should be able to freely break in without fearing for his safety. At least this is what my college law professor tried to argue.

You should've checked Fark first. H.P. Lovecraft wouldn't be terribly impressed at your investigative skills today.

It's a shame too. This older gentleman would've been much safer if the Democrats had taken all his guns.

Released without charges!?

Oh... It's in the UK. That would never happen in the US. Too many career-minded prosecutors.

Never mind the dozens of stories, including one right here in Tampa last week, where people have "shot first and asked questions later" and realized they shot and killed their child.

I guess in a way it's Darwin at work.

Gun control means using TWO hands

2004-09-04 01:51:29 PM
Wait, the old man wasn't charged? How can this be? It's all his fault the guy got shot!! The old man repressed the burglar! Ban all guns now!!11!!1111!

I'm actually surprised the old man wasn't charged, whatever happened to the good old days of civil suits?

Maturity isn't about being a grown-up, it's just how much unbelievable stuff you see happen.

No guns for me, I prefer things to be more personal, my weapon of choice is chinese war sword beside my bed. Some one breaks in....they'll never find all the pieces.

2004-09-04 01:52:52 PM
This is a great story. Someone in the British legal system has apparently taken a stab at reestablishing some sanity in regards to how they handle self defense cases. He shouldn't have been arrested at all, but he is getting better treatment than Tony Martin. This is progress.

2004-09-04 01:53:31 PM
Nevermind the thousands of thugs who've considered breaking and entering as a viable career path, then re-thought; "You know, you could get shot doing that...."

Sorry nodus, but Sarge6 is right. Sorry to steal from you, Sarge, but I thought it needed repeating.

Rather have the tools and NOT need em rather than need them and NOT have them.

The same reason my home is insured by my standard-issue 1911 .45 pistol. (close quarters only). If he gets out the front door, I can pick a flea off a camel's back @ 100 yds with my 1898 Mauser bolt-action rifle. Both quality weapons.

Well your last message gave the impression that you like to kill people.

Galland,

The Crown Prosecution Service (a govt representative) was formed to take the responsibility of prosecuting people away from the Police (who represent(ed) the citizens). Since they are a govt org, they are politically motivated. They will not prosecute unless they are pretty sure they'll get a conviction nowadays, cos it looks bad on their statistics.

Peter Hitchens's "The Abolition of Liberty" is very informative on this.

My guess is that self-defence is too devisive an issue at the moment, especially after Tony Martin and the Radio 4 poll (which called for a law allowing people to use whatever force necessary against burglars), that they don't want to touch it with a bargepole. It can't /really/ be due to lack of evidence! Self defence is an issue on which the ruling "elite" with their 24hr armed police protection and those that actually live in the real word differ somewhat. They're gonna have to let us defend ourselves eventually, but it won't be for a while, since it is against their whole plan of "social engineering" in which the offender is the real victim, and the property that is being stolen is probably "theft" anyway!

2004-09-04 02:01:26 PM
Interesting. The circumstances are quite similar to the Tony Martin case:
rural location (i.e. slow police response time)
guy burgled many times
shot the intruder as he (intruder) was trying to escape

Yet the outcome is totally different. I wonder if the CPS are worried about the possible public backlash. Of course, unlike the Martin case, no one was killed this time.

2004-09-04 02:04:43 PM
Hush up about accidentally killing my kids or neighbors, Bubbaprog! That's what a scatter gun is for. You see, birdshot won't go through the thick-ass plaster and wood in my house.

/but you wouldn't know that, as you are unfamilliar with guns, aren't you?

//forgot to mention the Shotgun...

That's a lot of guns you got there. If an intruder broke into your home, wouldn't you loose valuable time trying to figure out which one to use.
"Hmm, do I go with the Colt revolver, or the 12 gauge"
"Well, honey, if you're using the 12 gauge, I'm not cleaning up afterwards..."

C-Nut

No apologies necessary...

But there are people out there who shouldn't even get close to a fire arm, remember there are some who have been trained by the best (U.S. Military) and who can handle a situation of a break in.

I loves my Mauser -- 1918 6.5 x 55. $100 in cosmoline around ten years ago. I cut the barrel down to 18", put it in a sport stock. It's my favoritest weapon in the whole, wide world.

2004-09-04 02:10:42 PM
Nodus....

I'm not looking to kill anyone. I've seen enough of that in the military. I'm just pro-gun and thinkin ahead. I hope you never have a situation where you wished you need one.....

"The homeowner then accidentally shot three neighbours. The next morning a child playing in his yard proceeded to shoot his baby brother in the head."

well I've got a pistol a shotgun an uzi a .50 cal and an ICBM with thermonuclear weapons, under my pillow.

And one time the kgb was trying to break in and steal these top secret files i was holding for the cia, and it was a good thing i had my guns cause otherwise i wouldn't have been able to shoot them all in the head with my auto-shottie after i threw a flashbang.
