Aren't hurricanes somewhat expected in Florida?

2004-09-02 02:07:26 PM
Oh boy, a green lit ironic debate...

/it isn't ironic...

Aren't hurricanes somewhat expected in Florida?

Isn't death somewhat expected somewhere around the end of life? Yes, of course... but it still gets in the way of living.

2004-09-02 02:11:49 PM
And there's nothing ironic about dying at the end of life.

/done

2004-09-02 02:16:47 PM
I've always said that dying is the last thing I want to do.

My Cardinals beat FSU in a monsoon, so the Hurricanes have no excuse. If there is anything left of the Orange Bowl, we will knock in down when we roll in there in a couple weeks.

\ and if there any Kentucky fans in the thread, yes I am taking Sunday's game for granted :)

2004-09-02 02:20:58 PM
Hurricane? I thought the only thing that could stop the 'Canes was NCAA violations.

*rimshot*

2004-09-02 02:23:13 PM
isn't that why they are called the hurricanes?

next you'll tell me that there are alligators in florida... i'm not falling for that old trick.

Rye_, forgive me for being unclear on the meaning of your original post... I assumed you questioned the postponement of the game, not the irony of the story.

/of course it's not ironic... it's Fark, the only irony here is our misuse of the word irony

2004-09-02 02:43:30 PM
I have to disagree. I think it is correct use of the ironic tag. (Although I would have went with 'Florida'.)

I think it is ironic that a team cannot play its game because of very phenomenon they have nicknamed their squad after. Wouldn't it be ironic if the Houston Rockets couldn't play because their stadium was hit by a missle?

unseth, similarly I think it would be ironic if a game in Gainesville was cancelled because a horde of alligators had taken over the field.

\man, I gotta get back to work

Flubby
I'll take that to mean you're taking it for granted that Louisville will be 0-1 on Monday. Go UK.

2004-09-02 02:57:02 PM
flubby, I'm the first to hate pedantic wannabe intellectuals, but... sorry, no, still not ironic

Irony is a very specific and uninteresting concept

Have real Seminoles ever stopped a FSU game?

2004-09-02 03:14:31 PM
real Seminoles start every FSU game. Chief Osceola rides to the 50 yard line on his horse Renegade and throws the burning spear into the ground. Pretty bad ass. SOmething Jules Winfield might do.

"real Seminoles start every FSU game. Chief Osceola rides to the 50 yard line on his horse Renegade and throws the burning spear into the ground. Pretty bad ass."

You 'Chief Osceola' is not a real seminole. And that tradition sucks.

The real question is, has an alligator ever stopped a UF game?

It would be ironic if an event called "Sunshine Festival" was called off because of a hurricane. Or if a vegetarian is named Mike Butcher.

flubby's examples are not irony, they're coincidental. Irony requires sort of a contradiction in terms paired with an outcome that is opposite of expectations.

MIAMI -- Florida State and Miami will still play in prime time, just four days later than planned.

The nationally televised game, originally scheduled for Monday night, was postponed Thursday

Monday night -> Tuesday night -> Wednesday night -> Thusday night.

I count three days later. Must be written by a UM grad.

How 'bout them dawgs?

Geniuses take perhaps their biggest game of the year and perhaps largest recruiting tool and reschedule their game on HS football night.

Better for the rest of collegel football.

Ooh, I like this one! I'll have to cite it in my next song.

The game was postponed thursday, today. It will be played the friday after labor day, four days after it was originaly scheduled.

Thumbs up on ironic tag. Hurricanes washed out by a hurricane, yes, that's irony. Don't listen to Rye_; he spent all day invading Europe.

I'm a Kentucky fan, and I hope your team is also taking the game for granted. It will be real nice when we pull the upset.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh...C! A! T! S! CATS! CATS! CATS!

If they were known as the Miami We-Never-Postpone-Our-Games-Due-to-Hurricanes this would be ironic.

Why couldn't Kellen Winslow play this year? Could see him get HURRICOWNED!

Crap, I can't find the link of that chump getting ransacked by a Titan.

Is that huge fat dude quarterbacking again this year? He was pretty good @ KU. Of course they still won't beat UL.

I thought you Okies would have had enough of the SEC. Personally I'd love to see you guys play UGA.

//appreciates a Sooner loss anytime

I dont think this is ironic at all. If it was the Miami Cleardays and it was post phoned by hurricane, than that would be ironic. Actually not really. This is just not really an interesting article, like, some football game got cancelled due to weather, who cares.

2004-09-02 06:37:37 PM
For those harping on the Gator thing: "Florida's opener against Middle Tennessee State on Saturday also was rescheduled"
So, yeah, they mention the Gators (Florida = University of Florida = Gators).

Every time the goalie makes a save! Also, the fact that the Devils are comfortable on ice. There are probably others. Like if one of them wins the Lady Bing award (or which ever award is given to the best sportmsan.
