Trailer park folks should stand down. If it's name is the plural of France, it's likely to just give up ...

Just Ignorant

I don't know why, but they didn't put Hugo on there, I know the track was extremely close to Frances. Hugo ripped the Charleston area a new one in 1989.

When not wasting time on Fark, I run a network for a small(ish) municipality in the Orlando metro area. We're already in emergency mode. Latest email I saw from the head of one of the local counties' fire / rescue department (who's also a certified meteorologist) stated that "if I had to imagine a worst-case scenario, this is it". If it follows the latest path as predicted by NOAA, it's really going to suck to be in Orlando come Saturday. Estimate is that if it makes landfall as a Cat4 it'll still be a strong Cat3 when it gets here.

We're expecting a goatf*ck of evacuees from the coast. Escape from storm surge (out of frying pan), then go to Orlando (into fire).

/will be wearing brown trousers on saturday, just in case

That would be awesome but there's a big high-pressure system sitting to the north of the storm preventing it from turning. It's supposed to weaken, but nobody knows when or how much, that's why nobody's saying where this big old biatch will hit land.

Hurricane drinking game.

Day of: Drink every time a newscaster says "Hunker Down"
Day after: Drink every time a newscaster says "Dodged a bullet"

It makes for some fun during the chaos.

This is what I have to say to my ex who was afraid of earthquakes here in California and is now living directly in the path of this hurricane, and also Charley three weeks ago:

HA HA

I love living in a place where snow is the worst of my fears.

... To all those in the path of this raging biatch, please take care, stay safe.

So there's a chance that it could hit VA, already bathing from Gaston...enjoy your new beachfront property in Richmond! God's punishment for being capital of the South?

2004-09-01 03:33:16 PM
So there's still a chance it'll hit Disney World? Hey, there would be a silver lining...

2004-09-01 03:36:10 PM
Too bad it won't hit NYC tomorrow night...eyewall pounding Madison Square Garden.

DerangedHermit, you're right. They used Able, Baker, Charlie, etc. from 1950 to 1955.

azrien, In 1995 they went all the way up to Hurricane Roxanne! I'd forgotten about that, but I just saw something about it last night on "Storm Stories".

How come you never see or hear anything about all the people in poor Caribbean countries like Haiti, whose houses are built out of old pieces of aluminum siding and cardboard?

I mean, looking at the picture, there's a bunch of very stressed out people in the Turks and Caicos Islands at this very moment.

Ya just can't reason with the hurricane season...

I lived in Key Largo during Andrew. Really worried about all you Floridians. Such a drag to leave all your stuff and enter gridlock for a week just to find a f'ing motel.

2004-09-01 04:14:07 PM
Projections this morning were that this could be more destructive than Andrew, due to it's current strength.

Andrew was the most expensive in history.

Good Luck Florida, yer gonna need it.

You all chill on the rumours - there are no evacuation orders up and running for madatory evacs yet. Tommorow the tolls are going down (YEA!!!!!!!). However, as a life time resident of the sunshine state, I would suggest that you please do relocate to another area, far, far away, as soon as possible. People are already leaving Orlando, turning up missing, and there are little if no supplies left in town. You can NOT ride out a catagory 4 storm if you are on the coast. I know you are pointing fingers at Charley and making gestures at Punta Gorda and the people who rode that out. Trouble is this is NOT a Gulf hurricane - this one is much, much worse. There is also a case being made for this reaching cat5 when it starts to enter the gulfstream.

And for you Andrew people. Yes, Andrew was a cat 5 - that has been determined, but know also that Andrew did make landfall in an uninhabited area down by Florida Bay. You all in homestead got middling cat 4 winds and microburst, tornadoes, and hellfire. You did not suffer the eye of that storm and yes, you all lost everything but yes, you survived.

You will NOT survive a cat 5 storm on the coast. You need to leave. If this is a cat 5, I am leaving my beloved home 35 miles inland from Titusville. Remember the tidal surge. This is NOT a unusually high tide as some have reckoned, it is a tidal wave, in this case 14 or 18 feet high, and it will devastate whatever it touches. And yes the storm will drive it inland and across.

So be safe my Florida family. And do leave. Lets all meet up in Georgia and have a barbeque.

so what are the odds of me catching a flight out of orlando saturday morning?

2004-09-01 04:25:01 PM
MarkAnthony

The same as Friday sweetie. You won't.

2004-09-01 04:27:35 PM
A nice roof collapse on the RNC would be spiffy...

2004-09-01 04:29:43 PM
I'm in the direct path (Jax), but I'll probably evacuate Friday morning or so, like most people, but if I stay I'm making one hell of a blog (I live right by the beach)!

/Probably won't survive if I stay
//Probably is going to evacuate, even though I'll still be five minutes from the beach after 6 hours of traffic :(

2004-09-01 04:38:15 PM
I'll be bunkered down in Orlando yet again.

Any Orlando Farkers up for a hurricane party? Email is in profile.

2004-09-01 04:41:01 PM
I'm ready for it.

Come and get me, Frances!!!! Show me what you got, punkass!

2004-09-01 05:10:46 PM
Dude they are saying this thing is going to hang over us now for 24 hours. wtf?

Dude - this is going to move the beach? Like closer to Bithlo. I am not shiatting you. If this is a cat 5 hurricane, the map will change. Permanently. SPLIT!

2004-09-01 05:30:31 PM
Correction: 1995 actually went up to Hurricane Tanya. Roxanne was last one to hit land that year.

2004-09-01 05:45:45 PM
Again, SC and Georgia Farkers keep an eye on it!

2004-09-01 05:47:35 PM
Good luck to those in the affected area.

When you unfortunates pick up the pieces, consider rebuilding in a hurricane-resistant manner. They look funny but they're really strong.

As I live in tornado alley, I've decided that my next house will this type of building (partially underground too).

Beautiful..

Scotto

The tracks shown on that map are more specific than just location. Category and Month-of-year are factored in...

I live in Venice. Can take in one or two evacuating Farkers for a couple of days. Bring a sleeping bag and you may have to help me clean. My contact info is on my web site, which is linked to on my bio page.

The shuttle fleet is in trouble.. all 3 orbiters are in the OAB building... designed to withstand max winds of 105 mph...

The 1700 hrs briefing shows the "feet dry" point for the hurricane is closer to KSC with the center of the eye passing 7 miles south. Not good since the eye is 22 miles in diameter.

The VAB is 500+ feet tall and almost as wide - that is a lot of sail area, plus the winds at 500 feet can be as much as 20-30 knots higher than on the surface.
It's also currently covered with 15 stories of scaffolding.
