Guy should stop complaining.

The fact that schoolboys kept chanting

had nothing to do with it.

I can't stand them either. But the chafing without them is distracting.

2004-08-30 06:31:01 PM
They may keep their underwear outside, but at least they change them every hour.

2004-08-30 06:31:02 PM

Yet another piece in the proof of my claim that "Pravda" is now, and has been for its entire history, the Russian version of "The Onion."

This is bogus, since everyone knows that Georgia is the homeland of all gnomes. Need I say more?

And your point is what exactly???
Hello, McFly???

Although I should've have searched at work...

I'm not a fan of Greece-E underware
/got nuthin

2004-08-30 07:01:58 PM
I should demand the Russian soldiers should leave the range ground in Gonio before spring, or we will make them leave instead

If in Georgia "leave" means "get Tbilisi reduced to rubble," then yes, Georgia will make the Russians leave.

Yet another piece in the proof of my claim that "Pravda" is now, and has been for its entire history, the Russian version of "The Onion."

No, Pravda is a respected newspaper. Some jackasses just registered the domain before it did.

http://www.rferl.org/featuresarticle/2004/08/6b850295-3a40-4de9-a1ad-6c3ba4f19 743.html

"'The fighting has been going on for three hours now. [Georgian forces are using] large 152-millimeter mortars. One entire family was killed by one of those strikes, by a direct hit -- a 14-year-old child, a 90-year-old woman, and a 70-year-old man,' she said.

"Gagloeva said the attack was coming from the nearby ethnic Georgian village of Tamarasheni, a few hundred meters north of Tskhinvali. There was no immediate confirmation from Tbilisi.

"Earlier today, Georgia said three of its Interior Ministry troops had been killed and another seven wounded in the separatist region. The death toll brings to 12 the number of Georgian soldiers reportedly killed in South Ossetia in a week.

"Also today, fighting broke out between Georgian and South Ossetian troops for control of strategic outposts in the region's northern Djava district.

"In an address broadcast on national television, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said the capture of those strategic heights would, if need be, allow his troops to 'quickly take control of the entire South Ossetian territory.'

"However, Gagloeva denied the heights were still under Georgian control. 'The Georgian side managed to take the initiative at some point,' she said. 'But as of now the Ossetian side has succeeded in retaking the position. The situation is under control, although it remains difficult because of Georgian artillery fire.'

"There was no immediate reaction from Russia, which has dozens of peacekeepers deployed in the region to monitor the 1992 Georgian-Ossetian peace treaty."

Amusing. How droll.

You are, I surmise, implying that "The Onion" is NOT "respected?" There are many more examples of "The Onion" being cited in foreign newspapers than vice versa~

I've never even looked at "The Onion," but I assumed it to be a satirical site from the way oldebayer was talking. But having read Pravda and Izvestya for a good number of years, Soviet and post-Soviet era, I can pass judgement on it. It seemed to be fairly accurate, when the story wasn't propaganda. It certainly never commented on Russia conquering Mars 30 years ago.

Was in Tbilisi in May-- and I can affirm that the place is already rubble...

Yes, it probably is. I was kind of paranoid about going to Chechnya and Georgia, mainly because they seem to have a really strong hatred of Russians. I was afraid of getting kidnapped.

Notice those underpants are BROWN?
So when they sh*t themselves it's less obvious till you take a whiff.

I didn't mean to denigrate or demean the verity of Pravda, but in recent postings seen here on fark.com, it seems fairly obvious that they have degenerated into a tabloid-type purveyor of rubbish. And I never said anything remotely derogatory about Izvestya.

/Relieved nobody has called me out on claiming that Georgia is the homeland of the gnomes.

Fun Georgian fact #1
Georgians frequently have big 5+ hour parties with friends, family, whatever. At these parties toasting is taken very seriously. One toasts the host, distinguished guests, and (invariably) *wait for it* Stalin. They don't take kindly to critism of Stalin either.

Fun fact #2
Georgians will refer to people from Southern Europe as "black". What word do they use for africans you ask? They use "attractive and successful African-American". I suppose this is the influence of MTV and the like since blacks aren't a common sight over there.

Fun fact #3
Marriage by kidnapping is still practiced in Georgia. It's not common by any means, but it still happens.

Georgia is a very strange place. It's population is around 5 million (about the size of Metro Atlanta or Houston) but it has numerous groups who (like their Chechen neighbors) want independence. It'd be like Macon and Valdosta seceding from the state of Georgia.

/has girlfriend in Peace Corps Georgia
//going to visit in December!

Tupuli
I knew a Russian girl (ethnic Russian) who grew up in Georgia before coming to the states. She'd tell similar stories. She also remembers how difficult it was for even young girls to walk alone: guys would grab, pinch, fondle, etc. all in broad daylight right on the street.

She said she wanted to go back to visit, but knows that's impossible. Anyone coming back (especially after they get a US passport) is a target for kidnapping - a booming industry there still.

2004-08-31 01:14:24 PM
Well... being born in Georgia, I am indeed offended by all the Russian underwear hanging around in the streets.. especially when the Russian Army only issues one pair per person... so the soldiers "lazying around on their armored vehicles" are indeed not a very pretty sight, especially when their underwear flops on a rope beside them. And the gnomes comment... hmm.. I suppose it's true....

Goddamn it, I told that's the website, not the paper. A small group of reporters from the original Pravda that was disbanded by Yeltsin decided to register the name and write the website. The website and newspaper are not related in any way whatsoever.

So torn on Russia vs. Georgia. Russia, within the last two centuries, is history's most unapologetic sumbiatch asshole SOB cock who never deserves the benefit of the doubt. Then again this dude basically treated the South Ossetians exactly the same way Hitler treated the Jews in Germany- that is scapegoating them for all the nations' woes, so that's not an inaccurate Godwinning there- and the Ossetians actually do suffer less under Pootie Tang's watch.

I fear encouraging Captain Shirtless Tinydickavich be observing there are people running nations who are worse than he is but at least they are generally powerless.

Crotchrocket Slim: I fear encouraging Captain Shirtless Tinydickavich be observing there are people running nations who are worse than he is but at least they are generally powerless.

Define "powerless". President-for-life of Uzbekistan have boiled alive (and presumably still does, but quietly) his prisoners in the boiling oil. President-for-life of Turkmenistan have created a bona fide religion with him in the main role, with his holy book at least equal to Quran, by law. Yes, they are powerless to harm you or the Europe, but for those who live under them they are anything but powerless.

But Pootie Tang and Russia is powerless to harm you as well. Yes, Russia may consume a bit here of their neighbors here and there. Yes, even us, Baltics, may fall, theoretically. But Russia is completely powerless, and isn't particularly willing, to harm somehow Europe and the US.

There would be time when we'll have to deal with those terrible states in the south-east of Russia, and who is actually going to deal with all that? I don't think it's going to be Europe or US, eh? The West completely abandoned those countries and doesn't even care what happens there. It will be Russia, for compared to them, Russia is the holy grail of humanism, freedom and democracy. And the knee-jerk reaction "well, those are Russians and therefore wrong" isn't going to be helpful.

Sure, it is absolutely necessary to resist Russia's aspirations towards Eastern Europe - that is, us. But you need to be smart in doing that, not by throwing tantrums. Hitler's Germany, and whole Fascism in Europe, happened not because he was simply evil; it was a natural evolution of the situation in Europe, of the history, of the previous war, of the many problems arising from nationalism and... err... Well, I'm at the end of my English here, so let's just call it "the whole thing".

And the path to solve future crises lays not in the isolation of Russia and shouting "you are nazis!" at it, but in patient resolution of the underlying problems of "the whole thing" that leads to the undesirable evolution of the states.
