The US, the primary destination for Colombian drugs, finances the war effort with 400 million a year and has hailed reduction in drug crops as evidence that its war on drugs is finally bearing fruit.

The stupidity of the human race never ceases to amaze and disappoint me.

As long as there's a demand, there will be a supply.

Well it was the wrong word for the sentence!

Point I was trying to make was Prohibition didn't work during the 1920s and isn't working today.

National prohibition of alcohol (1920-33)--the "noble experiment"--was undertaken to reduce crime and corruption, solve social problems, reduce the tax burden created by prisons and poorhouses, and improve health and hygiene in America. The results of that experiment clearly indicate that it was a miserable failure on all counts. The evidence affirms sound economic theory, which predicts that prohibition of mutually beneficial exchanges is doomed to failure

Maybe its just me but don't the "War on Drugs" sound the same as Prohibition on alcohol.

Why would anyone want to ever start Cocaine, even as it's reputation grows more deadly?

Yeah lets legalize crack. That would be realll smart.

2004-08-27 10:53:27 PM
legalize it and let the morons destroy themselves.

We should have surrendered that war long ago.

Um, the war on drugs has been lost without you knowing, because the war was lost to the drug ... nicotine.

If we legalize it, then the drug lords would become even more powerful, establishing an empire and, as we all know, moving on to more serious crimes.

The 'war on drugs' never should have been started in the first place.

2004-08-27 11:01:52 PM
Well, duh. It's called capitalism.

And yes, we should legalize all drugs. The problems with illegal drugs exist because of their prohibition.

2004-08-27 11:02:34 PM
Why don't we just find a way to add poison to the coca plants.

2004-08-27 11:02:45 PM
Marijuana farmers have known about cross-pollination, plant husbandry and genetics for a long time, growing stronger and more versatile plants. It's not a surprise that the coca plant would receive the same attention. Each variety of clone gives its own particular effect. This will probably add a kick to the cocaine traffic business, if dealers can boast multiple varieties of product, each one a little different than the other.

It's a shame they didn't develop this herbicide resistance in time to save Saskra Fortissima, a now extinct plant that grew alongside Coca, and the only source of Saskra Root, an ingredient in Coke back when it still tasted good. Read more.

The "War on Drugs" could be ended more cheaply and with a lot less loss of lives if they just took that (wasted) 400 million and GAVE it to the major suppliers in exchange for not distrubuting. Same as farm subsidies. We pay you not to grow.

Of course, the Government could just get out of the buisness of dictating what people can do with their own bodies on their own time, legalize the shiat, and watch the crime rate drop to next to nothing.

But then the Government wouldn't be able to make any money. Seizures are a billion-dollar-a-year industry now. Artificially inflate the prices, and let demand take over. Then we take your cash, we take your car, we take your house. And everybody from the street cop up gets to take a piece...

Maybe it's just the way the title's phrased, but does this remind anyone else of Rurouni Kenshin?(Kanryuu arc to be specific) We really need a Megumi Takani right about now, but the recipe's a bit too widespread for that

2004-08-27 11:07:09 PM
Legalize the crap (ESPECIALLY pot) and make it a controlled substance like booze. I don't use the stuff but as a taxpayer I am infuriated that money is taken out of my check in a blatantly futile attempt to keep adults from getting what they are going to get anyway, while making a black market that makes criminals mind bogglingly wealthy. Yes, its the 1920s all over again. Giving a victimless crime victims.

And while we're taxing things, tax the farking churches.

If I recall the figures from a class I took correctly, it takes 350 pounds coca leaves + a lot of kerosene+ time to produce a single pound and half block of coca powder, which is refined into cocaine.

That's a lot of plants.

the war on drugs has has clearly worked. Less than half as many people use drugs today than 25 years ago (1979 = 14 percent of U.S pop. vs. 6 percent now). If we were able to say the same thing about AIDS or teen pregnancy or any other social problem, people would be hailing it as a success.

Only problem: stupid druggies want more drugs and want it socially acceptable so they don't have to find work or become productive members of society.

ahmen brother. especially the part about the churches

2004-08-27 11:12:44 PM
No, the problem with illegal drugs exist because they are unto themselves dangerous and unable to be used in any circumstance recreationaly and safely at the same time.

2004-08-27 11:12:45 PM
I say: legalize cocaine, then all the idiots who take it remove themselves from the gene pool. Darwin gets a boner.

Actually, the drug dealers/growers would contiinue to sell and still collect on the side. Dealers are the definition of scum and taking a dealer's word is like taking the word of Kim Jong Il.
