I'd do it, but Warbirds makes a good point

2002-02-02 05:52:48 PM
Every single link. I hope fark automattically deletes anything linked to goatse. I'm sure there are several people each day that try submitting goatse but calling it something else (and I bet they're all from SA).

2002-02-02 05:54:44 PM
As soon as website starts asking for money, I go somewhere else.

2002-02-02 05:55:08 PM
hmmm.... $5.00 a month seems stiff....concidering SA charges a flat $9.95.

I'd have to say no to $5 a month

2002-02-02 05:56:15 PM
I've always believed that 90 percent of FARKers were semi-literate or functionally illiterate.

Thanks for proving that.

2002-02-02 05:56:48 PM
voted yes because $5 is: 1.cheap 2. have had trial offer which i like (i.e. current/continuing fark) and would enjoy seeing unposted links when time permits. liked the voting/top 5 idea. but also like others would want payment to be easy. either yearly or EFT/debit. monthly wouldn't work, i'm a historic late pay. btw, unlike others i've not found another site i like as much as fark. for content or comments.

2002-02-02 05:58:29 PM
come on all we need is another great web site to be ruined by making you pay for the services. Fark is awsome how it is right now. Just kep it that way

2002-02-02 05:58:30 PM
Personally, I probably would not pay for the service, but I still think it is a great idea. It can't hurt you to offer the proposed service, assuming that you leave the free page the way it is. And that is where the problem lies. As soon as your offer a pay service with more links, people will start complaining about how you are posting less links on the main page(whether it is true or not). So if you are willing to put up with the biatching, then you have nothing to lose. THe only people using up more bandwitdh would be the ones paying the money, and as long as your don't heavily advertise it, I doubt that many people will even notice.

2002-02-02 05:59:40 PM
Great idea.. I just wouldn't sign up for it.

2002-02-02 06:01:56 PM
Sgamer *pats cheek* it's ok hon... breath... just ignore the dumbasses, mkay? ;-) (and I'd better see you in May!) ;-)

Drew, I think it's a good idea. I'd make it a 6-month subscription min, and maybe add on the dumbass-filter and I'm there! Otherwise, I'll just stick to what I've got now and send my telepathic messages of appreciation and thanks. You are getting those, right?? ;-)

2002-02-02 06:06:47 PM
Sounds cool. That would mean if it's a slow day for "official" Fark, there'd always be something to click.
Whether I could always spring for it, I dunno. =( Full time school, part time job.

2002-02-02 06:09:04 PM
Drew,
You sell moderator privieldges, and "Rule For a day" priveledges. WHy not sell submission checking services?

If this 5 bucks a month included the ability to vote for accepted links and turf bad ones sort of a there'd be a lot of people signing up for it. I see it as row upon row of links, with radio buttons next to them, one to promote(+1) and one to kill (-1). If any link gets, say 15 "points" total it moves onto the main page, -10 points and it gets thrown out of the cue. Fark would suddenly become self-sufficent. anyone can submit, those who care enough to pay get to vote, and us lazy cheapskates just show up and look at the end result. You'd still get ultimate power of course, just in case PETA buys 100 "memberships" to swing the tide.

My appologies if this idea was brought up already. Got sick of reading all the whiny posts 20 submissions in.

How about a bake sale instead?

2002-02-02 06:16:26 PM
Canuck Guy:

Your version of the new Fark would sound alot like everything2.com

2002-02-02 06:33:00 PM
$5 a month? That's $60 a year. It only costs $20 to subscribe to a magazine. Isn't that a bit STEEP for a few extra funny links?

2002-02-02 06:34:54 PM
After checking up on this thread for about three hours now... I have the solution.

To everyone who still thinks that this would change the regular fark, go find a gun. Stick the pointy end in your mouth. Push the thin piece of metal away from you.

Problem solved for all of us.

2002-02-02 06:35:04 PM
Wow I like the submissions idea (a first on these 'what should fark do to make money' forums). Then, even if I don't pay, I could see links selected by voting, rather than just the fark.com team (wider range of opinions means more opportunity for them to match mine). Plus, Drew, that means more beertime.

Of course, it also probably means more coding and bandwidth, but it's something to consider.

2002-02-02 06:36:29 PM
This is I think the 3rd time they have put this up for vote. Why don't you just do it for a month or two Drew and get it over with. That way you will know if it is worthwhile or not.

There would be good stuff I'm sure since I've seen a ton of links posted in the forums that were ten times funnier than those actually posted. I think the fark admin bias does shine with a lot of the links.

BTW, I would pay for it.

I really hate most of you people

2002-02-02 06:39:02 PM
***********************************************************
fark could make model boobies and sell them.

$1.50 to make in bulk
sell em for $15

put a fark logo on them, they'd sell fast and give advertising and exposure

everyone likes boobies.

2002-02-02 06:39:10 PM
Wow.
I (foolishly) read most all the posts.
Would someone please correct my reading and logic skills.
Surely it would be impossible for 95%+ of the people who take the time to post to have not properly read the original question.

Question: Would you pay $5 for this potential new service.

Where is everyone getting: Would you pay $5 for Fark if we added more stuff?

Big difference.

2002-02-02 06:39:14 PM
Seems like with the auctions you have to moderate for a day or a month, this is slowly evolving into a pay per veiw page. I can see Fark going to a subscriber only page soon. I hate this cause I have been here for a good while now. I enjoy getting the latest "news" and other interesting tid bits going on in the world. Beer Me .......

2002-02-02 06:42:04 PM
I think I'd be into it except $5 a month seems a bit pricey for me. Now, I know everyone says $5 isn't much but I guess it all depends on your situation. However, treating it more like a magazine subcription $20 for a year or 10 months or something like that would seem more reasonable for me anyway. Then I'd at least consider it. Anyway, you could always raise the price after the first month.....

2002-02-02 06:51:15 PM
why just make it available now.

2002-02-02 06:51:22 PM
Allright, NEW SALE, BUY MY ACCOUNT, all proceeds go to the fark fund! Be one of the first 5340 accounts on fark.com!!! Whoo-whoo!!! Pretend you've actually been here longer than you actually have! It's a goldmine! Bidding starts at $20 of 4 boobies.

2002-02-02 06:52:00 PM
Hello close bold tag... where are youuu????

2002-02-02 06:58:37 PM
I don't think I'd buy into this scheme. It seems that most of the articles posted anymore are sports related or simply advertising Fark-related promos on the radio or Tech TV. There's more self-promotion lately then I remember, and it's getting old.

However, the quality of Photoshops is better than ever.

2002-02-02 07:00:36 PM
Seems a bit backwards. Who wants to pay to sift through all of that crap to get to the good stuff. The moderation and filtering out of the useless stuff is where the sites value is to begin with.

Drew
If you are still watching, if you are going to go through with this thing, why not offer one free week of it? Just so everybody that is fence posting on this idea can try it out.
It might turn out to be one of those things that if you try it and it stops you can't be without.

Like all these people who complain about how bad fark is, but what do they do when the site goes down for like 1 hr. How bad do they freak out?

It could be one of those things you can't do with out once addicted.

1 thing, if somebody submits something that is obviously NSFW and doesn't mark it as such, can you ban them from being able to sumbit anything again? I am a tad bit worried about getting 600 links a day and going through them at work and hitting a NSFW that isn't marked as such.

Just run this promotion of free time from Feb 15 to Feb 22, and no longer. So nobody can just make a new account to get another free week???

Personaly for me 5.00 is not much of a test invenstment, but some people are tight with their money and might want to just see what it is like for first, or think it is stupid, try it and see it isn't as bad as they had thought?

Oh and I would really dig on getting a nkosika[nospam-﹫-backwards]kraf*com email addy. Do a 5.00 for the email addy or 5.00 for the links, or 7.50 for both. Something cool like that.

2002-02-02 07:16:25 PM
I think that before adding a pay service (I mean, isn't that what TotalFark.com is already?), maybe redesign the site to make ads feature more prominently, therefore making it more enticing to advertisers.

2002-02-02 07:27:21 PM
I'd say go for it. Filters out the retards and oboxious kiddies quite nicely and it is a great web-site you have going here.

Some additional bonus to 'members' might be nice, though. Forums? Wubba? I don't know.

2002-02-02 07:29:02 PM
Or is this about 'rejected' links? In that case, no. :P

2002-02-02 07:30:14 PM
I'd be willing to pay. But $5 a month may be a little too much. You'd probably get more takers if it was $30 or $40 a year.

2002-02-02 07:32:28 PM
not gonna pay for that

2002-02-02 07:41:15 PM
nope, fafk is pretty sweet the way it is.

2002-02-02 07:41:28 PM
gogi ill get an e-mail off to u tonight

2002-02-02 07:43:21 PM
damn it I suck at typing, I meant Fark *hangs head in shame*

2002-02-02 07:51:02 PM
At 8.5 page view hits.. find a CREATIVE way to pay for the site.

2002-02-02 07:51:30 PM
million that is...

2002-02-02 07:52:44 PM
I'm sorry..5$ is just 1/2 of a hooker's price
in the place where I travel in holliday's time

2002-02-02 08:01:02 PM
How about this. Charge a $10 yearly fee for the right to be able to submit links. That way the queue will be a lot easier to manage with a lot less crap.

2002-02-02 08:08:03 PM
I will support whatever subscription model FARK uses, so I vote yes, cuz I will pay.

On the other hand, I have no interest in seeing ALL the submitted links. I'm not that board!

2002-02-02 08:09:33 PM
Drew OFFER IT, theres over 200 YES votes, at 5$ each, thats 1K$'s per month more you would have
OFFER IT.

2002-02-02 08:09:39 PM
I'm not against the creation of this separate site for those who are interested, but I personally couldn't do it. Sorry, but I'd like to if I had the money and the free time to surf.

2002-02-02 08:14:17 PM
Whoever screwed this thread up should be beaten with a rake to pay for their mistake.

2002-02-02 08:17:24 PM
Would I subscribe? No, I don't think I would. Do I think it's a stupid idea? No, I think it's a great idea. 11% of the almost 2000 voters have said they'd subscribe. If every one of them followed through, that'd be about $1000 a month extra for Fark.

2002-02-02 08:18:24 PM
I think everyone who posted a negatively should be billed five bucks.
