I want to add to my above post...

I mentioned a very young age group, ignoring the problem of older kids who are overweight. I stand by my claim that young kids do not have issues with food the way adults do, and so do not typically "binge." Little kids are the best example of eating when hungry, stopping when full, and being active. Little kids are less likely to be fat than adults. However, there are a lot of overweight young kids. In this case, of course the kids do develop issues because they realize they are different. My little sister is - and always has been - overweight. She has always felt bad about it, even when very young. And because of this, even at a young age, she was like the "neurotic mothers" mentioned above who binge. I actually remember helping at a birthday party, where most kids really literally were just being goofy and forgetting they even had cake, and my fat little sister was hovering over her cake, as if it was gold. So kids who already are overweight are of course going to have issues with food. But the natural tendency for young kids is just to be goofy kids....the reason more and more are getting fat, and thus not being normal, active, typically thin kids is because more and more kids are learnig from their increasingly overweight parents.

And this spreads into the older years, and spreads further into adulthood. Which is my theory as to why more adults are overweight than teens, and more teens are overweight than little kids...

Now, if the parents took responsibility for their kids, then this would not compound to such a problem. Healthy habits are more stable in people who have had these habits for a loooong time. So if friggin parents started caring about their kids' health, this would not be a problem.

My little sister is a classic example...she's te only one out of nine kids who turned out fat. Now, she is also the only one who was primarily raised by my junk-food loving dad, who stopped working to care for her. She has eaten like my father her whole life, and became very overweight. He just says its her natural build...uh, right, Dad. She has actually been losing weight at age 12, all by her own choice. I was very surprised the last time I came home to visit. She gets no help from my parents, who load up the house with junk that she somehow has disciplined herself not to eat. Its just sad to me that a 12 year old should have to do that....it would be so much easier if my parents weren't irresponsible shmucks.

Gelatinous: chocolate isn't poison enough to harm a dog.

Sorry, the information at this link does not entirely agree with your statement. Important bits: "2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems." Believe me, before I posted, I checked the facts, at least a little bit. I don't have punditis.

"chocolate drops" are actually a brand of dog treats that resemble chocolate, but are actually completely safe.

Now THAT I was not aware of. Thank you.

Isn't it enough of a treat to watch as the doughnuts float down the river of boiling grease and through the wall of glaze? That's always been the most fulfilling part of my trips to Krispy Kreme.

user name-
Your parents may be setting your sister up for an eating disorder. Many that suffer from anorexia start off by refusing real junk, then they go overboard and start seeing that nearly everything is junk, or they won't eat anything beacuse there's nothing but junk in the house.

Your sister sounds really smart, hopefully she realizes all of this but if I were you I would spend a lot of time with her.

Yeah, I do worry, and I lecture my parents about it. They just refuse to accept responsibility. I think by kid #9 they are worn out, and she is so far in age from the rest of us, which is also a problem. It actually makes me very mad at my parents when I think about it. She still has treats occasionally, she just in general doesn't eat the crap my parents do. I came home once and she was packing her lunch for camp, and she had like a sandwich and grapes, with some little snack on the side. I was so surprised at her discipline, because we of course had oreos and all this other shiat. But she takes care of herself. I just worry because that was the age I started to notice my body, food, etc...and I feel like its intensified for her because of her weight. Thanks for the concern. I'm already convinced, its just a matter of convincing my parents.

Now I feel bad. I do love them of course, despite their faults! Perhaps they should have stopped at kid #8??

Yeah Childhood Obeisity is ALL Krispy Kremes fault, it has nothing to do with vacuous minded, toffee headed, malodorous nitwit parents and their inability to control even themselves, much less their own children, and their assinine goal to sue everyone else for their own short-comings. Sometimes I find myself very close to accepting the need for a license to have children, but then I realize the only thing less competent to choose that option than parents in heat would be a government sponsored committiee, I guess we are just screwed any way you look at it.

They should given the to kids who do poorly. The coffeehouse at my
university used to give free milkshakes for midterm deficiency notices.

They only have 140 calories each, for Christ's sakes. That's as much as a NutriGrain bar. Moderation is all it takes; don't eat a whole friggin box.

In my opinion this is what parents need to do to in relation to their children.

1. Move the TV out of their bedroom
2. Move the ability to connect to the Internet from out of their bedroom.
3. Move the video games out of their bedroom
4. Move the phone out of their bedroom.

A child's bedroom should be for sleeping or some reading. The problem today is that parents by giving their children everything have ended up designing their Childs own little hide away whereby he/she does not need to interact with the rest of the family or find other things that do not involve sitting on ones arse to do.

A family should have a TV (not one for each room). Do you know what that does it teaches them to negotiate; that they can't always get what they want and that they may have to wait. Same goes for all the other items i.e. Internet connection, video games, phone etc. Also by only having one which means sometimes a child cannot do what he or she wants they may actually do something else i.e. communicate with their family, go out and play etc.

In my opinion parents give too much to their children. Tell them No, not just in relation to food but also in relation to material goods (even if you can afford it).

I also believe that little rules such as no
