While this may be the norm I refer you all to "Nashville Pussy" which is a punkish rockabilly band (or something like that) the lead guitar is a rocking girl who not only shreds but can deep throat a beer bottle while she does so.
2004-08-23 10:29:33 AM
Girls can't play guitar.

Tell that to Shannon Curfman.
2004-08-23 10:30:18 AM
Tell that to Bonnie Raitt, as well.
2004-08-23 10:35:00 AM
I can't either.
2004-08-23 10:35:21 AM
repeat to the bangles, donnas, go-gos... etc.
2004-08-23 10:35:48 AM
I would think that just based on how they fap they would natural guitar players.
2004-08-23 10:35:52 AM
joan jett
2004-08-23 10:36:26 AM
Meh, seems like someone afraid of chicks. Or the author wishes he was one. Either way, the author comes across like a dickhead.
2004-08-23 10:36:29 AM
No mystery here. It's the same reason there aren't renowned girl magicians. They don't have to try as hard as guys to impress to get a date.
2004-08-23 10:36:32 AM
sure they can, look at Prince
2004-08-23 10:37:20 AM
I can play guitar, and I'm a girl. But I'm no Bonnie Raitt, that's fer sure.
2004-08-23 10:37:54 AM
earthrhino wins.
2004-08-23 10:38:02 AM
Tell that to Jennifer Batten...

/obscure 80's reference
2004-08-23 10:38:56 AM
RTFA. The argument is that a girl has never played, much less written, virtuoso-level guitar music. Maybe girls just aren't interested in covering "Eruption" or "Race with the Devil on a Spanish Highway", but the fact is that you have to play the most difficult songs if you're going to be considered a "guitar god". He isn't saying there haven't been any female guitarists who made good music, he's saying there hasn't been a female equivalent of Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen.
2004-08-23 10:39:14 AM
I second the notion on Shannon Curfman and will throw in a plug for Kelly Richey (pops)
2004-08-23 10:39:20 AM
Jeez, tell that to L7 and the eighty million riot grrrl bands from the 1990s.

/also don't tell Nishi_Kawaguchi_ style, her guitarists will kick your ass.
2004-08-23 10:39:39 AM
It's because of their boobs.
just like golf and throwing a baseball.

/got somethin.....
2004-08-23 10:39:39 AM
I'm a big fan of female rock artists. I listen to them almost exclusively. I've never found there to be a lack of them. I'm not sure what this author is smoking. Telling a story about a high school teacher who didn't like a metal band playing in a high school talent show proves women are taught to not play guitar? please.
2004-08-23 10:39:43 AM
I disagree. there are some great female guitarists out there but please don't use the Go-Gos, Bangles, or even Joan Jett as examples.
2004-08-23 10:39:51 AM
The Donnas manage to Farking rawk with minimal guitar skillz. Petrucci like virtuosity might be overrated.
2004-08-23 10:40:39 AM
Great Kat

2004-08-23 10:41:12 AM
obviously the submitter has never heard the likes of JENNIFER BATTEN. Now that woman is truly awesome
2004-08-23 10:41:20 AM
knuclebreather that may be what he says his point is. but there are lots of b.s. comments in that article. Starting with the one right under the title In the World of Guitar Boasts, Few Women Let Their Fingers Do the Talking.
2004-08-23 10:41:44 AM
I dunno, always thought that chick in 'Zombie did a good job. And she wasn't too hard on the eyes neither... but then who wouldn't be standing next to an eye-sore like Rob.
2004-08-23 10:42:14 AM
"Take off your shirt"!!!
2004-08-23 10:42:42 AM
I don't care if Liz Phair did not pioneer any guitar styles, I say she is the best playing hottest-MILF guitar playing chick I have ever seen. She could play Puff the Magic Dragon on the rest of her albums, and I would still say she is better than Clapton, just so that I might have a very small chance to sleep with her.

earthrhino does win.

i was about to type something witty about the "a neck is just a neck" part of the article which doesn't really go too deep into the point.

and eddie is better, he did take classical so of course he's all over those strings. in this age of electronica it's kinda cool how he played that shiat live and kept his shiat sounding good.
2004-08-23 10:43:08 AM
Why can't girls play guitar?

Who cares!
2004-08-23 10:43:18 AM
where the f'k was the science?!
2004-08-23 10:43:24 AM
Kaki King is an amazing guitarist- virtuoso level, and she's doing things with hitting the fretboard that are unbelievable.

Bonnie Raitt is nothing special.
2004-08-23 10:43:47 AM
The only thing I learned from this article is that I can't play guitar because of Hillary Duff. I'll never be in my fantasy rock band now. Damn you Hillary, damn you!
2004-08-23 10:44:01 AM
All of you are missing the point. He isn't saying there aren't good female guitarist. He is saying that there aren't any you would even consider near jimi hendrix and such. Of course all you farkers are gonna name some female guitarist that nobody has heard of before and say nah ah there is so and so. If 95% of people haven't heard of them, then they can't be considered great rock guitarist. I can't think of one female rock group that has sold more than one top 50 album in the last 10 years.
2004-08-23 10:44:10 AM
That article was about 1500 words longer than it needed to be.
2004-08-23 10:44:11 AM
I see zero science here.

Subjective rankings are fun for everyone.
2004-08-23 10:44:28 AM
Girl can play, they just don't feel the need to play endless sessions and imagine they are rock and roll Gods. It's like Yngwie Malmsteen, 99% technique 1% soul.
2004-08-23 10:44:51 AM
i never heard a decent woman banjo player either tho.

don't knock the banjo.
2004-08-23 10:45:22 AM
Hey Alice, you're right. *shakes fist in Hillary Duff's direction*
2004-08-23 10:45:39 AM
Ani DiFranco - stunning acoustic player
2004-08-23 10:46:11 AM
I realize she's not terribly popular outside of classical guitar circles, but Sharon Isbin would give Robert Fripp a run for his money. Sharon Isbin (pops)
2004-08-23 10:46:19 AM
As far as players, the Dixie Chicks are up there for musical prowess. But as the article states, it's not revolutionary.

Flaccidor : I see your Jennifer Batten and raise you a Phantom Blue. :)
2004-08-23 10:46:21 AM
Must've never heard of the Throwing Muses, Belly, The Breeders or has never met any hippie chicks...
2004-08-23 10:46:39 AM
quip from the article:
they don't have the mind-set to practice and work to go [testicles] to [testicles]. Not letting guys take over. 'Get the [heck] out of my way, now! I'm going to kick your [rear]!

heh it's been through the ultimate version of the fark filter.
2004-08-23 10:46:51 AM
Talented male musiciancoontalented female "musician" with tig ole bitties.

A theory I've dumbed down to "Tits over talent."
2004-08-23 10:47:08 AM
And if any of you folks in Austin, College Station, Houston, Dallas, and parts of Louisiana get the chance, I suggest an evening with Tracy Conover...
2004-08-23 10:47:14 AM
Of course, the music industry doesn't have ANY gender bias...
2004-08-23 10:47:22 AM
I agree that there have been very few female guitar "pioneers". I would think Nancy Wilson (if just for Barracuda) would be among them. The "Here comes the science" cliche on the link title was wasted though - there's no real explanation in the article about why, other than "there just aren't". I think saying it's a man's game is bullshiat (although I would gleefully shout the "take off your shirt" line, I suppose), and I don't think girls lack the talent in some innate way. I guess just most of them aren't motivated enough.

Come on, girls - get to work! Prove us wrong!

BTW I don't know whether it's Ani Difranco playing guitar in her songs or if she has a lead guitarist, but some of that stuff is pretty good.

the science is that Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest guitars contains only two ladies.
2004-08-23 10:49:27 AM
Who saw Ali G last nite?

Ali G started beatboxing with the folk singing women at the anti-abortion rally.

He even threw the word "abortion" in while this broad was playing a guitar..

Comedy gold.

This article is about as insightful as the Modesto Bee's recent piece, "Why do Mexicans have so many children?"
