Shenanigans? The very first thing I learned in martial arts is to assess the situation, and remove myself from the danger whenever possible. Just get away from it.

The first time we asked our JKD teacher how to fight a man with a knife when we were unarmed, he chuckled and said, "Run!"

Martial arts training can be very effective & it seems like the girl had alot of training , like Master level blackbelt. Assuming she is in good physical shape , she would be a formidable an deadly person to fight! You could easily end up dead Voramyr in a fight against her. To disarm and neutralize an opponent armed with a knife isn't the easiest thing to accomplish like she did , so she does know how to fight very well.

It would've be a lot easier to shoot him. Oh, wait, this is England? It can't be. There's no crime there since all the serf/subjects of the Queen have been disarmed.

Sir Chevron Food Mart- you're right this would have been much better if the criminal had a gun. :P

The artical failed to mention it was a butter knife and the man was just lost and asking for directions...

The article confuses me. So she was driving and then stopped to confront him? Seems she was intentionally putting herself in the situation. Sounds rather stupid and idiotic not to mention against a majority of the self defense tenets that I've encountered in my life. That being to avoid situations and the use of force if possible.

2004-08-14 07:20:48 AM
The attacker was 5 feet and 6 inches tall, and fat, according to the police description. So she took down an Oompa Loompa. Way to go!

While im all for ass kicking goodness.
When someone is trying to do you in (with i knife no less). you really need to get away from that. People need to stop been heros. Just because you are a ninja blackbelt wateva doesn't mean your going to hold your own againts a zipped up jukie that wants his next hit.

If this happened to my old lady. She would have put some big holes in the guy with her S&W 357 magnum.

2004-08-14 09:24:58 AM
So she left her car to face a "large-build", unknown man who was armed with a knife, forced him face-down and misteriously the story jumped to the part she resumed her trip and notified the authorities.

What happened after the guy was on the ground? How could she force a "large-build", angry and armed man to stay on the ground? And how could she returned to her car and simply resume her trip?

Did she took a self-defense class or a pathological lying class. The girl is clearly talking out of her butt.

Well, it is so a true story. The memory is seared, seared! into her memory. Plus, it happened on Christmas day.

OK!

She forced him to the ground, so she should have finished him off by stomping on his head, kicking him in the ribs, breaking his arm or stomping on his pills.

Guess he ain't gonna be bragging about that in his favorite bar.

2004-08-14 11:23:38 AM
he chuckled and said, "Run!" - Sucky teacher in my opinion. grab a handfull of quarters and pennies and whip em at the attackers face ... then run. Cause if you aint faster, you'll get a knife in your back and die like a cowardly dog, than with a fighting chance to live.

Lotta "arm chair" Martial artists in this forum. Heck a yellow, even a lowly blue belt could disarm a person with a knfe. You don't need to be some super 500th level black belt ninja assassin to disarm a person with a knife. It simply ammounts to how much practice you have.

From what i can gather from the shoddy article it seems that he carried the knife in front of him (stupid) as he approached. In that situation it only takes one move to break the elbow and bring down your opponent.

2004-08-14 11:27:33 AM
Umn... I know that actually reading the article is optional around these parts, and this one isn't really all that clear, but it sounds like this guy was following her.

The road narrowed to only wide enough for one car, and she stopped to let them by. I can only assume this is when the attacker jumped out of the car, since it says in the article she was "forced to stop" when she saw the attacker approach her.

From here, it's very hard to say wether getting out of the car was a bad idea or not, but best I can tell it surely wasn't the worst.

What are you going to do? The guy hasn't shown himself to be a threat yet. Throwing the car into reverse and running him down would be making YOU the criminal fark in this case. Going offroad would probably just get you stuck in the middle of nowhere.

You have absolutely NO idea what this guy's intentions are until he reaches your window. He might be trying to kill you - he might just want to let you know that your brake lights are out. Though I'm sure plenty of Americans would have just shot the guy through the door and been done with it, right?

You also have no idea what he's carrying. Could be a knife, a tire iron, possibly a gun. She *knows* she has self-defense training. Sitting is NOT a very defendable position- and auto glass isn't going to stop a tire-iron.

So instead of sitting there, like "dead girl #1" from a horror film, waiting for her window to be smashed in, and dragged out the hole, she got out of the car and gave herself room to manuver.

You work with what you've got. Complete evasion is the best option, but it's not always possible. Not knowing the complete facts about the encounter, it's hardly fair to criticise this woman for defending her own life from some criminal asshat...

i would love it if this story were true, but its obviously made up.if she was able to "put him down"or whatever, why didnt she continue to beat him up till he was incapacitated?
no,she just lets him go on his way?doesen't get his licence plate #? vague discription of the "attacker"?why she didn't just drive away to begin with?call the cops on her cell fone??it all adds up to a big bs story.

I agree that the article's vague, but it's not impossible.

If she took Aikido she could have used an arm bar, which looks something like this (couldn't find a better pic, sorry):

You learn that as a white belt, is excellent against a knife attack, works great against people who are heavier than you, and since it hyperextends the elbow the person receiving it will not WANT to continue the fight.

2004-08-14 01:16:54 PM
Big deal, he had a knife. I'd have been a lot more impressed if he'd been brandishing a raspberry.

"Release the Bengal tiger!"

2004-08-14 01:17:00 PM
I'm glad that she got away, and most people in this thread agrees with me, but that was really foolish. and the first rule of self defense is..... 1. Dont be foolish (i.e. - fighting a guy with a knife)

/bring a gun to a knife fight, don't go to a gun fight

2004-08-14 01:42:53 PM
She can't "proceed to beat his to a pulp" as then it would be "unjust force" and she'd be the one going to jail with a hefty lawsuit even though she was the attackee.

She did the right thing.

Aikido. You know, tomiki ryu, chi society?

2004-08-14 02:43:25 PM
An arm bar is simple to do and quick.

when an attacker thrusts at you, Usually it's from waist high cause they're dopes and don't know better. You twist. One hand pins the wrist against your body while the other arm pushes pressure on the shoulder or elbow area usually against the natural direction the elbo bends. This causes great ouch and well, for a fat overweight guy he's probably not all the flexible and probably had a few tendons torn in the process.

Now why the girl didn't get the license plate... Well she was probably shaken up a little and had some hardcore Adrenaline pumping. Geting away, and alive, was far more important than getting the license plate number. Or kindly asking the guy to keep his face smashed into the gravel whille she calmly walks over to her car, and grab the cell phone, look for paper and a pen and call the police while getting his license plate number.

The best bet, would simply leave the rather stunned guy where he is, dash for the car and take off before he comes to his senses and slashes, rapes and/or kills her. There were "No houses in the area" and it was well wooded.

If you'd read the article I posted above Devir, you'd have seen the stats that more people die, overall, from knife wounds than gunshot wounds. Having had a knife pulled on me more than once, I can attest that the article above is very true. Tunnel vision, memory lapses, all mental abilities fairly much go out the window.

Most martial arts practioners, even vaunted black belts, would be seriously injured or killed by even a mediocre knife practioner. And MusicMakeMyHeadPound, if you really believe that your knife attack is going to come waist high and linear, (well suited for Aikido randori) then I've got some bad news for you.

Some advice, go find any low level Arnis or Silat practioner since they incorporate knives from day one of their training, give him/her a bit of chalk or a magic marker and have some fun practicing your moves. You'll come away very, very humbled by the power of a knife.

"Most martial arts practioners.....seriously injured or killed by even a mediocre knife practioner"

Indeed, however this guy wasn't a knife practioner, he was someone who needed a weapon to hide behind. If he had any confidence and formal knife training he wouldn't have felt the need to pull a knife in the first place, odds are he has no formal knife training and hoped that the knife itself would scare people off, not get them mad and motivate them to fight back.

Also even though she "won" this conflict, I think she did a very risky move in grappling with a guy, odds are he had the strength advantage, and I think it would be better for the weaker person in a conflict, especially if unarmed to start with striking.

Not and arm chair either, 8 years and counting.

2004-08-14 03:42:09 PM
Leverage is stronger than strength.

Chances are though that this guy was hiding behind a knife. It's an intimidating weapon and in most cases all you need to do is brandish it.

and a good 80-90% martial arts in the US is a joke anyway. The problem is it's their income. So belts have to come fast. um, never mind, rant stops there cause it'll get bad.

Hurray for "blame the victim" mentalities. This is like the Japanese contractors in Iraq getting publically dressed down when they got home for being kidnapped.

According to the law, you are allowed to defend yourself up to and including the death of an attacker who has obvious intentions of killing you. The last time I was attacked (by a coked up kid) I poked him under the chin with my switchblade and the cops just ignored that when I filed the arrest warrant. (The kid was arrested and jailed.)

LOL! Good one.

As a shodan in Isshinryu, I concur that it is proper procedure to run away (or in her case, just drive away) from someone with a knife.

Please feel free to disagree with me, all you Steven Segal wannabees.
