To be honest, this is one of those situations where a lawsuit is a GOOD thing. While she may not be able to stow her own luggage, 9 times out of 10 the flight attendants are more than accomodating for people with disabilities? It certainly couldn't have been that big of a deal for them to assign a steward to assist her onto the plain, and another one off the plane. Its not like they had to get somebody to chew her food for her.

That having been said, yes, I agree with airlines that charge obese people for two tickets. If you use the space, you gotta pay for it.

I guess she wouldn't have to worry about the jackass in front of her leaning back into her leg room.

I'm pretty cool with this lawsuit, I think. Shouldn't have to happen, but at least it's not totally frivolous.

They were probably alarmed about what the stewardesses...ahem, "flight attendants" would have to do when the inevitable call to nature came during the transatlantic flight.

Ok seriously....her mental anguish came from this particular bad experience. I would think that the mental anguish would come from spending 42 years of my life with no arms and no legs. At that point don't you think you would have heard it all before??

At my university, I saw a woman with no arms or legs riding a motorized wheelchair that she managed to control somehow. On top of that, she was talking on a cell phone that she had couched between her head and her left shoulder.

As a fat dude, let me just say how pissed off I am at all the assholes who whine about their rights when it comes to being charged for extra space.

When you buy groceries, do you expect the grocery store to accomodate you so that you can buy twice the food for the price of a non-obese person's grocery bill?

Forget the imposition on other passengers for a moment - why would a fat person want to fly, cramped into a tiny seat that most average sized people can't even jam into?

I don't fit into a coach seat. Big farking deal. So you know what I do? I buy a first class ticket so that I can ride in comfort and without upsetting anyone else. It isn't rocket science.

Grow the fark up and stop wanting something for nothing.

I'm tired of disabled people whining about everything. You're a cripple, it's not our fault, and we shouldn't have to feel sympathy for you. Stupid lawsuit from a woman who shouldn't have been flying without an escort in the first place.

I have to agree with the airline on this one, as much as I hate too. Helping disabled persons is one thing, but someone that is tottaly incapacitated is another... what if she needs to use the restroom?

I submitted this with a better article (Reuters.) It explained that she gets around in a wheelchair and has flown many other times alone without problems.

And to those knownothing jerks at AP, thalidomides are now being used to treat for leprosy, but in the 1960s it was widely used to treat morning sickness and insomnia in pregnant women. Birth defects (seal limbs) resulted from use during the first trimester. It was never approved for use in the USA, so the problem here was limited to those who were treated in foreign countries. Its first approval for leprosy in the US was in 1998, so calling it a leprosy drug is misleading.

This is stupid. An English woman with no arms or legs screws around for four years due to her own inabilities in some way, finally figures it out, hires a lawyer, and files. Ok, now that I can somehow understand, but wait:

She's English. The defendant is French. The suit is not only four years after, but is now filed in Manhattan.

Part of the reason she is filing in the US might be because part of the monetary damages were accrued in the US;i.e, she had to put up her companion in a hotel. If the suit goes forward, conformance to Air France policies will probably be a major issue. Europe has been dealing with thalidomide baby's for 40 years, so it not a new issue with them.

So I'm thinking, what must this be like. When you don't have any arms or legs, you probably have to plan for a trip much differently. There must be tons of logistics involved. Packing alone must be a biatch. But you persevere and get yourself ready to go. You call up a friend to take you to the airport. You suck up your 42 years of limblessness and smile at all the people in the terminal who are looking at you like some freak. And finally you make it to the ticket counter. Accomplishment!

Then some farking Air France flunky says no, you can't fly.

You can send your idiot kids or feeble grandparents on a flight on their own and the attendants will take care of them (sometimes for an extra fee, naturally). People with IQs of 40 and others who don't understand a single word the attendant is saying manage to fly regularly. But this woman who's figured out how to cope for 42 years with no limbs can't fly?

I guess she didn't know that "Boxing Helena" surprisingly flopped in France.

This bothered me, too. Revisionist, or just plain ignorant, media.

I worked in a pharmacy in high school, and had to prepare bottles of thalidomide for a customer.

The box containing the pill actually has a picture of a "flipper baby" (so called b/c the arms and legs are deformed and look like flippers). I guess the pic is to remind us not to give the pills to pregnant women. I found it more then a little disturbing though.

Secondly It took her four years and she couldnt even get past the first step of filing a claim..... And THEN she realizes she needs the help of a lawyer. I can only imagine that this lawsuit was on the top of her priority list, right after suing the guy on the subway that made fun of her, and then suing the company that makes bathroom signs for being insensitive for not making any female toilet signs with a flipper person in a dress.
