PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- Officials report that Hurricane Charley has struck Sanibel Island near Fort Myers, Fla. Earlier in the day, Charley unexpectedly grew into a dangerous Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds and a wall of water up to 20 feet high.

"Punta Gorda. He never got over Punta Gorda."

Hang tight Fla Farkers.

Thats what I thought...that once it hits land it loses its ability to draw the amount of energy needed to sustain it. I thought there may have been a possibility it gained strength in the watm shallows of the coast before landfall.

But Charley's changed the rules already a few times today...anybody know if a hurricane has gone from 2-4 that fast before?

Just got a call from my bro in Cape Coral {cellphone}. Sustained 90 mph winds but only small debris, roof tiles and such. Luckily no storm surge but the wind is actually forcing rain water to leak in around the windows. Last night he called all worried about me and just a little rain here east of Tampa, no winds yet.

Yahoo weather for Deland, FL:
Hurricane force winds expected. A wind driven heavy rain. Low 74F. SE winds at 50 to 70 mph, increasing to 70 to 90 mph. Rainfall may reach two inches.

Better get in the zone, madmonk!

Thanks pontechango. Not sure what a Trappist is, but I'm not leaving unless its absoluetly necessary. I'm not stupid or stubborn, I just love my house (trailer). I'll try to give periodic updates (rainfall, lighting, shiat flying by.)
2004-08-13 04:23:48 PM
I bet the Scientologists in Clearwater think they steered the storm away, using their magic OT powers.

jeez the mods are all over this thread. ye be warned.
2004-08-13 04:25:05 PM

trust me the cops have better things to do than drag you out of your house. They might be dragging your dead body out tomorrow though :)

Actually no, it may take them a few weeks.
2004-08-13 04:25:23 PM

Were at war in 2 countries and this olympics has spent over 2 BILLION in security. If you don't think that not only the states but the world isn't affected. My point in mentioning it in a hurricane thread is that FEMA and national security is going to have their hands full this weekend.
2004-08-13 04:25:40 PM
Trust me pals and gals. If the trailer so much as shakes, I'm gettin me, the wife, the dog, and all computer equipment the fark outta here.
2004-08-13 04:25:51 PM

I'm not stupid or stubborn, I just love my house (trailer).

Well, here's hoping your house doesn't decide to give you a great big hug...

/good luck

Man, Fark is the best place to do the refresh-refresh-refresh thing when shiat is hitting the fan somewhere. This thread is addictive.

Woah, I rode out Hurricane Alicia. Well actually my dad made me ride out Alicia. After a couple of hours of no power and rising water/flying pointy things, he decided that maybe it wasn't such a good idea. Asshat almost got us kill-ded. So what exactly is the point of riding it out anyway? Did he think we would just grab on and hold the house down as it tried to fly away?
2004-08-13 04:29:30 PM
Thanks Chopstick. It won't start gettin bad here till later tonight. But I did have to go to 4 different places to get gas. Funny how only the premium pumps worked.
2004-08-13 04:29:37 PM
N. Tampa update: A gentle sprinkle of rain (not enough to open your umbrella), little enough wind that you have to look carefully to see the leaves on the trees move at all.

themadmonk: 4. Lots of alcohol..................CHECK!

Yeah! Tonight I finish off that bottle of 15-year-old Glenfiddich. Good luck and happy boozing, themadmonk!

Just Ignorant: Luckily, the federal government will be there to rebuild those mansions for them.

True indeed - provided there's any land at all on which to rebuild them. If not I guess they can buy houseboats or something... Actually if you want to be sympathetic think about all those trailer park residents just inland. Betcha more than half of them aren't insured at all.
2004-08-13 04:29:38 PM
Good cam, Servo3000
2004-08-13 04:29:44 PM
GREAT freakin cam!!!
2004-08-13 04:29:47 PM
According to the latest projected track, it appears that it will cross over FL then back hug the east coast along GA and SC making landfall again around the Myrtle Beach, SC/Wilmington, NC area. My guess is that it will lose a little of its punch crossing FL then gain a little when it gets back over water before slamming into the coast again. Then again, I'm an engineer/musician..not a meteorontologistisis.

This thing is in Charlotte harbor, which is big enough to let the eye stay over water while the storm rapes all people. It's turned north, as it entered the harbor. Punta Gorda and Port Charlotee aregoing to see several sides of the eye. Those people are farked.

God bless sunny Florida.
2004-08-13 04:31:27 PM
Why don't these cams work for me? )#*$#$
2004-08-13 04:31:50 PM is still streaming their newscast though the have gone on to their own power generators. The eye is still over warm water in Charlotte Harbor.

Lauderdale Beach Cam shows beach goers just waiting for the influx of Cubans and Haitians to arrive in inner tubes any minute now.
2004-08-13 04:34:30 PM
You folks need to turn on the Weather Channel and watch the moron from WKMG reporting every now and then.

I'm hoping for the nearby stranded sailboat to smack him one in the back soon.

We'll get some nice video from the cameraman as he sails up into the air if the wind picks up any more. Well, until his video cable breaks, anyway. :p
2004-08-13 04:34:52 PM

2004-08-13 04:38:11 PM
Prayers won't stop a hurricane. Period.

2: I won't pray or send good thoughts to you if your there.. you stayed and that's your problem, god doesn't exist anyways.

three: I wish I could be there to go thru it and I really hope some of the webcams hold up, this internet thing has really brought the world together.. another step towards evil globalization?
