Stell cells could potentially be used to address a lot of diseases, because they are non-differentiated cells. Parkinson's disease is a result of degredation of dopamenergic neurons that could be replaced by new stem cell neurons, Alzheimer's is more complex but also could have a potential treatment with stell cells, and plenty of other applications are out therre, dependant on if we can figure out how to coax undifferentiated cells into different cell types.

How many diseases have already been cured via stem cells? None, simple answer there. The problem is that too many people expect science to come up with a cure at the drop of a hat. They take the idea of "potential cure" to mean that scientists have already figured it all out, and just need some time to make it happen.

Science takes time, and research, by its very nature, can't promise anything. I really fail to see how people are expecting results when countries make it extremely difficult to run experiments in the first place. Invariably, failures come before successes. But the government needs to give scientists the permission to make those failures, so that eventually the next group can build upon that research and come up with a success.

I would say it all depends on what your definition of a PERSON is. IMHO, a clump of cells is not a person, an embryo is no more human than the sperm or egg by themselves.

There are many other ways to define life than at conception:
-When the embryo emplants
-Blasolysm (No idea how to spell that)
-When the neurons in the brain begin to form
-When the neurons in the brain being to fire
-When the parts of the brain assosiated with higher thought form
-When the parts of the brain assosiated with higher thought become active
-When the baby can survive outside the mother with medical help
-When the baby can survive outside the mother without medical help
-Birth

I think "birth" is kinda pushing it, there's really no change to the baby that occurs at birth to which you could point and say "He's alive now, and wasn't before".
