(Not a big movie or TV guy here)

PPL_Wannabe, Dan Rather was once attacked outside a building by some men and as they were whoopin' on him he said they asked him "what's the frequency, Kenneth?" I think he claimed they were Russian. Alot of people think Rather is a bit unstable anyway, so the incident just added to the legend that is him. A few years later R.E.M. lifted the phrase for a song title, further popularizing it. I don't think the incident was ever solved, and somewhere there are probably non-frequency-knowin' Russians still at large, walking the Earth. It's probably all online somewhere.

Not my article submission.

"What's the frequency, Kenneth?" is a song by R.E.M. afaik.

R.E.M held for questioning.

Peaceboy: Thanks for the link... I never knew what the guy's reasoning was. Ask Yahoo is kinda nifty too.. with that and Wikipedia, I'll never have another unsolved question.

They'll never tell you the frequency. Otherwise you'd be able to stop them from sending ads into your brains and stealing all your thoughts to make Generic Sex Comedy 348.

They've been doing since the 1930s. When they realized that EM waves could be used for mind control (the first electronic computer was built in 1925; four years after the transistor. 1947, you say? Ha. They have already gotten to you.)

It's 7, by the way. It's always been 7 and always will.

And by the way, pardon the threadjack, but I'd like to issue a public warning: Do not, under any circumstances, purchase and/or install Doom 3. Doing so will eliminate whatever sense of sanity, as well as desire to sleep or turn lights off, one might have.

/end threadjack

"What's the frequency?" is so ten years ago... especially now that it's been explained.

The STUPID tag is feeling neglected lately. I had to FarkBack to get its URL.

This is that anchorman who was forced to settle out of court with Richard Jewell for slander, right?

What ever happened to him? I heard he went into goat porn.

Is it just me, or is the site woefully short on boobies links lately?

I had heard the "frequency" story explained before...but I've never heard, why "Kenneth"?

Mental note: if I ever see a news "personality" in an elevator, greet them by pleasantly saying, "What's the frequency, Kenneth?"

Withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy.

You know, only 13 e-mails out of 3500 isn't a bad ratio... In fact, I don't know if I could send 3500 e-mails without threatening someone.

I heard (I can't remember the source) a much more involved version of Tager's delusions.

According to what I heard, he believed he was from a paralell dimension, where everyone had an exact physical duplicate. He'd been sent to our dimension for some reason or another, with the receiver implanted in his head.

He attacked Tom Brokaw because Tom's duplicate in the other dimension is Kenneth something or other, the Vice President.

Here's another tidbit to add to the tale. Theron Montgomery, the 33 year-old NBC stagehand killed by Tager in 1994, was an excellent guitarist and a big Joe Walsh fan.

Whats the frequency, kenneth? is your benzedrine, uh-huh
I was brain-dead, locked out, numb, not up to speed
I thought Id pegged you an idiots dream
Tunnel vision from the outsiders screen
I never understood the frequency, uh-huh
You wore our expectations like an armored suit, uh-huh

Id studied your cartoons, radio, music, tv, movies, magazines
Richard said, withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy
A smile like the cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth
You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh
I never understood the frequency, uh-huh

Whats the frequency, kenneth? is your benzedrine, uh-huh
Butterfly decal, rearview mirror, dogging the scene
You smile like the cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth
You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh
I never understood the frequency, uh-huh
You wore our expectations like an armored suit, uh-huh
I couldnt understand
You said that irony was the shackles of youth, uh-huh
I couldnt understand
You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh
I couldnt understand
I never understood, dont fark with me, uh-huh

Brokaw isn't liberal enough. Must purge all non liberals from network news. This isn't negotiable.

/Kerry's Pappa had a dream. He could name his kid JFK and then plant the little seedlings in that boys head so that his life would be a rerun of the life of the original JFK. But then the original had a bad ending. Too late, the mechanism has been put in motion. The Manchurian son.

kenneth was the name of a sound guy who worked on brokaw's show.

lots of people speculated that kenneth was the assailant, as his job consisted of being constantly asked "what's the frequency, kenneth?".

i heard this explanation before that attention whore tager came out, so, frankly, im buying this cow.

REM got the song name from the Rather attack, not the other way around. Only the wackjob who attacked Rather knew what it meant.

2004-08-07 02:58:53 PM
The only good thing about that REM album is that it taught me about MIGRAINE BOY

Whatever happened to that? The site is gone and I haven't seen the strip in years

Here's the album in question:

I heard a rumor recently that Joe Walsh was a character in the Drew Carrey (spelling?) Show. Is this true (being that I've never watched the show)?

I don't buy it... I worked news for lots of years, nobody would use wireless mics in a studio (too many variables to go wrong - dead batteries, interference, etc), so no one would ever ask "what's the frequency". Maybe if it was a remote broadcast, but a sound man wouldn't have anything to do with that...

2004-08-08 08:03:42 AM
Tom forwared all the emails to Dan Rather.

2004-08-08 08:53:38 AM
Rather's attacker was identified as William Tager.

feh. I call scapegoat. I choose to believe Colombian drug dealers were involved. Just like the O.J. murders.
