you can't become a millionare by letting your website run wild west (read: no rules)

2004-08-06 02:45:45 PM
Im glad you posted this Drew- it reaffirms that this whole "issue" is much ado about nothing. Keep up the good work.

New slogan...

" Whoring Ourselves via Big Whiny Rants for Site Hits."

2004-08-06 02:47:47 PM
see...i was right...

Fark is cooler than you.
2004-08-06 02:48:11 PM
Thanks for the clarification, Drew. It's all I personally wanted to see.

Appreciate it.

It's a great site.
$5 that are well spent evey month IMHO.

If it bothers you that damn much, then the answer is pretty obvious as to what you should do about it.

No complaints here, this was a tempest in a teapot to begin with anyway. I trust Drew's judgement. If a some paid links keep this site running smoothly and puts food on the table, then more power to you.

Fark is a powerful internet force and Drew has every right to use that influence to his benefit. If it were me, with the substantial traffic Fark can generate for a site, I'd be charging a premuim.

I heart!
2004-08-06 02:51:19 PM
So this means this crap is over with now, right?
2004-08-06 02:51:26 PM
I think the problem with Fark is the lack of cute pop-up ads with waving kitties.

[image from too old to be available]

More waving kitty pop-ups!
2004-08-06 02:52:08 PM
i find it amusing how little TotalFarkers cared about this.

and yes, let's hope this is the end of it.
2004-08-06 02:52:08 PM
in my book, fark has continued to be awesome -- never dull. if drew gets a chance to put his son storm through college, even better.
2004-08-06 02:52:14 PM

What I'm referring to there is stuff like AP and reuters, which every newspaper carries, and to a certain extent Knight Ridder. The idea would be keep the tagline, change the target site but keep the same article. If that makes sense.

Sure does. I think...

We're also looking to add multiple-headline voting contests. That's a whole other thing though

Now that's very cool. Who knew flamewars had another level?

Thanks, Drew.
2004-08-06 02:52:18 PM
Any way you slice it I like Fark.

Now if we can just get Drew to come to Texas for a Fark party...
2004-08-06 02:52:32 PM
Well said Drew. Thanks for keeping pop-ups off of Fark and TF. Thanks for clearing the air. Thanks for jacking the threadjackers. Thanks for weeners. Thanks for err... uhhh... ahh hell with it.... Fark On!
2004-08-06 02:53:39 PM
Well put Pooter!
2004-08-06 02:53:45 PM
Well put Drew.
2004-08-06 02:54:11 PM

Show us your boobies!

I am so disappointed in you Smooky. You're letting me down.
2004-08-06 02:54:24 PM
There has been questions for some time about the askmen and ifilm links, as to the possibility that they were paid for. Has this question been addressed?
2004-08-06 02:54:24 PM
"Fark Sells Out. France Surrenders"

Oh, yeah. Definitely the Worst. Headline. Evar.

/rock on, Drew & co.
2004-08-06 02:54:47 PM
I love this place. snif'
2004-08-06 02:55:21 PM
Askmen and ifilm links have never been paid for. The askmen are so horrible that we think they are funny, and the ifilm links are the only movie type place that can handle 80,000 hits in a day.
2004-08-06 02:56:05 PM
So this means this crap is over with now, right?

Yeah, I'm just dying to get back to 10-year old getting bit by Weird Al's parents' helper monkey at the French Surrender farmer's market while John Kerry fudged his war record witht he help of Fb-

ifilm links are used so I can test if the Realplayer plugin works for Firefox on Linux yet. It doesn't, so keep them coming so I can eventually get it working!
2004-08-06 02:57:30 PM
Well done Drew and company.
2004-08-06 02:57:45 PM
Nothing like a serious response to a serious allegation while still incorporating the word "boobies" no less than two times.

Kudos, Drew.
2004-08-06 02:57:58 PM

You don't have to show us your boobies. Mme has pictures.
2004-08-06 02:58:59 PM
Cool. Thanks for the explanation Drew. Wired had me worrying that people may think that I'm paying you to greenlight my 194 links in 7 months. ;)
2004-08-06 02:59:37 PM
Yeah, I'm just dying to get back to 10-year old getting bit by Weird Al's parents' helper monkey at the French Surrender farmer's market while John Kerry fudged his war record witht he help of Fb-

Damn, you and me both brother.
2004-08-06 02:59:58 PM
Good work Drew, now we won't have to see 2000 articles about this posted on TF.

Anyone have a spare gmail invite?

2004-08-06 03:00:00 PM
I think the only story (nay, lesson) here is that people don't like to feel hoodwinked.

It's clearly been a running joke that links might be sponsored [AskMen, Cosmiverse, etc]. And I think that any rational people would realize that any large site not claiming to be a impartial news outlet may very well be selling links now and then.

I could care less about selling links. As long as Fark remains funny (unlike, say, the tedious product placement in the "I, Robot" movie) it's no big deal.

Seems to me the only reasons this story "had legs" was that it sounded like submissions/comments about the issue were being mysteriously yanked for various reasons. That's enough to fire up the rumor mill, and then things go downhill.

Now that Drew has commented, and there is no apparent vast ad-selling conspiracy, the story will quickly die down.
2004-08-06 03:00:16 PM
Thanks for the clarification, Jeff!
2004-08-06 03:01:34 PM
yay for Drew!

yay for Jeff!

Anyway, I submitted this earlier with a better headline but since the fark admins don't like me they don't approve my links :D
2004-08-06 03:02:42 PM
It's done, finally

/or is it?

2004-08-06 03:02:53 PM
This headline needs an "Ass-kissing ensues" line.

//Drew's #1!!1!!
2004-08-06 03:03:34 PM
Thank you for your honesty, Drew.
2004-08-06 03:05:06 PM
educated, some of us cared enough to write feedback to Wired. We'll see if any of it makes Rants & Raves.
2004-08-06 03:07:51 PM
If the same material -- e.g. clip, news story -- is available in several locations, we may enter into a commercial agreement to prefer one host site over the another.

Isnt that just about every news story.
2004-08-06 03:08:54 PM
heh.. the Liters are still going nuts in every thread about this.
2004-08-06 03:09:18 PM
You mean its possible to actually read the articles before you comment on them? I'll have to try that sometime.

2004-08-06 03:09:53 PM
Congratulations Calacanis! You wanted attention for your stupid blog site, so you asked for some advertising on Fark. When you are told that content could be bought you post a diatribe about it on your blog instead of talking it out with Drew and understanding an honest mistake. Instead of acting like an adult, you get a Wired article out of it, and now, lookie here. You get attention on the main page for free. Well done! I hope you are reveling in your underhanded attempt to get you noticed. I hope you realize your little ploy has revealed you as a big fat asrsehole to the population of fark.

Waaah waaaaaah fark sells content. Well whoopty freaking do! I think you will find we dont give a crap so long as whats posted is funny.
2004-08-06 03:10:05 PM
Wow. Bendy.
2004-08-06 03:10:22 PM
Drew needs to buy a swingset for his nuts...
2004-08-06 03:11:01 PM
Thanks for the response Drew. BTW, virii is not a word. :)
