I used to have a skateboard. I rode down my driveway and planted myself in the street. A kid was walking by and he said "Do you know any other tricks." I was going to kill him but I didn't. BTW. That kid's name. Drew Curtis.

Skateboard ramps look cool as hell, I have to admit.

BUT

Did anyone see the dude pull a DOUBLE BACK-FLIP on a Motorcycle last night on TV? Admittedly, it was into a giant pit filled with foam blocks. But he did say that he's thinking of trying it during competition.

/Evel Knieval's gotta watch this stuff and just thank God that he got all his fame and stuff before all these idiots started flipping motorcycles upside-down and shiat. But Mad Props to him too, because he had a major hand in this. Not likely it would have happened without the past generations of complete lunatics

You are right about the violent part. Thats why skaters get ghetto passes. Gangsters for the most part dont fark with us. Jocks do. Cops do. Fat lazy idiots do. Rent-a-pigs do. Thats why you know this forum is a safe place to call us idiots. You call a guy a moron because he does something you wouldnt do. Well I guess your a moron too, because you are afraid to risk your life for a thrill. Im glad Danny Way is such a "Moron"... He has inspired me for years (Except in the first H-Street video when he was too good for his age) to try harder, crazier shiat.
Did you see the memo about this?

dangeresque, you scared me for a second. I thought he might've done it after I stopped watching. But it was just in the bio video thing. So I bet it kinda sucks to be there in person, and have to wait through commercial breaks and rider profiles...

You may find it boring/ghey or whatever, but I'm still waiting for a skateboarder to pull a 1440 on the vert...

I don't keep up with booting, so forgive my ignorance, but are they really doing 1440's? If so...

a) That is ridiculous and even I will admit slightly impressive.
b) You're working against your own point saying you're "waiting for a skater to do the same". The reason he won't is because his sport requires a lot more skill to do impressive aerials.

I used to ride BMX and hang out with a lot of skaters. My hierarchy of the 3 sports goes as following.

Skateboarding - high skill required, low risk (low relative to BMX)
BMX - less skill required, high risk (so acquiring the skill is harder)
Booting - low skill required, low risk

It just never impressed me much. When I was in high school, we would be at the local skatepark and some 8 year old kid who had never even touched a ramp would come out for the first time. Within an hour he'd be doing flippy-spinny tricks on the vert ramp. I'm not exaggerating. IMO it can't compare to the sports it is derived from, and is less entertaining to watch, to someone in the know, or, as evidenced by this thread, people not in the know. However, I agree with you that mainstream taste dictates (unfairly) what ESPN shows. BMX flatland requires more skill than anything else I can think of. These guys ride 8 hours a day. No ramp rider can claim that. But it's "boring" for spectators so it's gone from televised competitions. Lame.

And don't even try to tell me booting costs more money to get into than skateboarding. I don't know a damn thing about either, but they can't be significantly different.

Are people still skateboarding? I suppose it's a step-up from riding one of those scooters...

Yeah, its generally a bad idea to go to any groups hangout and ridicule and insult them. I dont really care what they do, so I dont go to the parks. If I did, I would just watch and laugh :)

Well I guess your a moron too, because you are afraid to risk your life for a thrill.

I guess I just put a high value on my life. One that is higher then a 10 second thrill. :)

My inspiration? Ben Franklin, Warren Buffet, and.. well.. this hottie I know that works at NASA (who I totally failed to score with.)

Each to their own, I guess. Whatever makes you happy. :)

Farkers,
Please scroll up and look how Bludstone and BizarroBarjockey settled what was initially a tense disagreement before it splintered into endless namecalling and such. This is a perfect example of how Fark can work if we try harder. Super props to both of you. The chocolate medallions are in the mail.

Peace and love, biatches!

I've been skating for most my life and I hold down a professional job in the IT field. So I'm not the typical violent skateboarder that some of you think is the norm.Actually if you went to a local spot, park or what have you, and actually talked to some skaters you will find that they are the most down to earth people you will ever meet. Granted you might meet the asshat but they exist in every sport...

Most skaters are not into it for a Xreme high or to do something to showboat. You should realize that its for the feeling of pulling something off that defies the norm. When you have been busting your self to pull a trick for weeks, or longer, the feeling of getting it off is immeasurable. Be it some simple kick flip trick or a uber air variation. regardless its not to impress people that could care less and can only make assumptions based on bias. Its personal and maybe that's why you don't understand. That's why some see the kid in the 7-11 parking loot tossing his stick around not pulling it off, maybe he has been trying for hours and just cant stick it. Maybe he does suck but he is trying and that's more then most people would do. They are content with just making fun instead of trying to comprehend.

X-Games has brought some notoriety to the sport, and I would have hoped some respect..as usual people still see skaters in a negative light. Oh well, I cant change your minds but really you should give people the benefit of the doubt when you don't understand.

For those that praise Danny Way, you got it right. He is the real king of skatebording. I'm not dissing Mr. Hawk as he has tremendous talent and has taken skateboarding into a new exciting direction..But pure talent wise Danny takes the cake. Just watch any of his videos or the comp this Sunday and you will see.

It seems that its ok to play football or basketball but skateboarding never gets its props. It takes so much more skill to skateboard then it does to toss a ball. Yet they get paid millions to do so. Most skaters skate for free because they love it.

That thing is freakin' nuts, you either have to have balls of steel or complete confidence in yourself to go down that farking ramp

Anybody who fails and can get right back up and try again on that thing has either had all the sense knocked out of him or is one persistant mofo

That being said, no chance in hell could you get me to go off anything like that

In the 70s a kid I knew went down a hill on one of those skinny plastic kind of skateboards they had then with no shirt on. He ended up running home with his nipple in his hand.

One of my favorite activities is watching local teens attempt and fail at tricks.

They just keep going over and over and eating it 99.9% of the time.

It's hilarious and somehow Zen at the same time.

Darwin would be proud.

Darwin would be proud.

The ironic part of your statement is that in a true Darwin-type environment (i.e. competition required for survival, literally), the type of people who are into skating would be excellent survivors.

But it doesn't matter since your statement is hugely out of context. Our society has evolved to the point where rarely does anything we do have a direct effect on our chances of survival. Our entire species has the ability to do things for fun, expression, and other purposes.

Some people choose to use this freedom to create challenges for themselves, and trying to complete those challenges.

Others choose to sit back and criticize.

Have it your way...

Danny Way's part in "Shackle Me Not" is one of the memory books. Super skateboarding.. at 14.

JohnGalt: that's because skating is *difficult*; it's not like just doing a wheely on a bike. Who are you, anyway?

I used to have a 10' half when I was a kid, used to do axle grinds on it, little baby airs, etc... I though I was "skateboarding"... hahahahah... They're dropping in on an 86' high ramp... I used to "skateboard"... hahahahahah, hahahah... they're clearing a 50' gap... hahahahah.. I use to ride these things, we called them "skateboards", we were "rad", hahahahahah.. hah....
