What the hell is a pooh? I just don't get it. Shouldn't he be Winnie the Bear?

Now Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo makes sense. He is a poo.

Eeyore, Grivas informs me that you're depressed....

depression is a very bad thing. It's like a virus. If you don't stamp on it it spreads throughout the mind, and then one day you wake up in the morning and you ... you can't face life anymore!

"The curious name of Winnie-the-Pooh came from Christopher Robin, from a combination of the names of a real bear and a pet swan. During the 1920s there was a black bear named "Winnie" in the London Zoo who had been the mascot for the Winnipeg regiment of the Canadian army. "Pooh" was the name of a swan in When We Were Very Young."

In the long run, it's not really going to matter. Disney has the connections - and if they can't license Pooh, they'll just license more of their other characters.

Example: Minute Maid bought licensing for Pooh and other characters from Disney on their kids juice line. If Pooh leaves, I doubt that Minute Maid will go off to the new owners of the Pooh name (who WON'T have any rights to the Disney-drawn image of Pooh) for licensing -they'll just come out with Pocahontas Punch or The Emperor's New Juice or some other Disney character.
Disney may moan and complain if they lose licensing rights, but it's not gonna bankrupt them.

So the basis of this lawsuit is that the Pooh characters are popular? Does the licensing agreement say something like "you get X% as long as Pooh merchandise doesn't sell more than Mickey merchandise".

Like most things from the Post, we are only seeing just a little bit of the story. Not even enough to provide a slant either way.

"No-one has the right to pull Pooh from Disney..."

*Heh*

I thought pulling Pooh was a matter of private choice for consenting adults

Disney better watch out. I hear Pooh's attorneys have an itchy Tigger finger.
If that doesn't bring up disturbing images, nothing will.

2002-01-29 12:10:10 PM
That's just about the scariest thing I've seen in weeks.

Still though, it's fun to imagine Disney filing for Bankruptcy alongside Enron...two giants of the most unregulated industries in the country, Utilities and the Media, on their knees begging for snacky-smores.

All what a grand time to be a Lefty.

2002-01-29 12:11:55 PM
There's just a wealth of fascinating quotes in this article:

"incredibly popular 'Pooh's Honey Pot' ride"

"Pooh is the 'most lucrative'"

"Pooh generates as much as a quarter of Disney's total annual revenues"

"in merchandise licensing, two thirds of our revenues come from our Mickey and Pooh properties."

"do not have any right to pull Pooh from Disney"

Okay, maybe I'm a little immature, but this sure is funny to me :)

2002-01-29 12:18:42 PM
Gee, if Disney loses their Pooh, maybe they'll have to try to make cash from original ideas. Haven't seen that in ... uhmm ... a real goddamned long time. I could be out of date on my Disney trivia, but isn't Lady and the Tramp the last original movie they made? Everything else has been re-telling of fables or other stories (usually bad re-tellings at that) or else stealing, er, I mean "borrowing" other people's ideas and using them in some spiffy new way, with music by Tim Rice or Hans Zimmer of course.

My mate showed me a site showing the anime movie that was ripped off for Atlantis. Hardly a subtle borrowing. And even though I do like The Lion King a lot, personally, even I admit there's no denying it was a rip-off of Kimba the White Lion.

And as for Pooh? If he drops off the face of the earth, that'll be fine by me. Same thing goes for Disney really, though I know the citadel of glee won't topple that easily.

2002-01-29 12:20:29 PM
I was on Pooh's Honey Pot ride for about three minutes, but then I just had to get off. Sorry Pooh.

2002-01-29 12:24:02 PM
Q. What was Tigger doing with his head in the toilet?
A. He was looking for Pooh!

2002-01-29 12:28:29 PM
"Now class, when we want to say yes in French we say 'Oui-Oui"

"HAHAHAHA!! What do you say when you want to say no, poo-poo? Excuse me while I take a wicked Yes".

-Family Guy

Oh yeah, Disney is the anti-christ, die Eisner, blah, blah, blah.

2002-01-29 12:29:31 PM
Disney mauled by Bear.

Seriously, I hope Disney gets it ass kicked. I was in a store this weekend and saw Pooh character dolls with Toy Story costumes on, i.e. Pooh as Buzz Lightyear.

I vomited and left.

2002-01-29 12:29:35 PM
My favorite Disney joke:

Mickey and Minnie were in Divorce Court. The Judge says "Mr. Mouse, you are here to seek a divorce from Mrs. Mouse, claiming she is insane?" Mickey replied, "I didn't say she was crazy, Judge, I said she was farking Goofy."

2002-01-29 12:29:36 PM
All you Disney haters need to get a life. Tell your kids and grandkidshow you are for shutting down the parks and kicking Mickey on the street just because they are a corporation and all that crap. Yes they need a kick in the ass once in a while but bankruptcy is just not called for. losers...

2002-01-29 12:32:55 PM
Disney may be in deep Pooh....Pooh-Dah... Pooh-Dah

Finiamh - Go learn about how Disney screwed Florida (and continues to do so) before assuming people suspicious of Disney have no good reasons.

2002-01-29 12:36:11 PM
Best. Disney. Character. Ever.

2002-01-29 12:46:57 PM
Pooh pooh platter.

2002-01-29 12:48:15 PM
Finiamh needs to learn to separate cute, cuddly cartoon characters from multi-national media conglomerates. It's a subtle art.

2002-01-29 12:52:03 PM
If I avoided every corporation's products just because they did something wrong, I wouldnt eat or be able to live much now would I.

2002-01-29 12:56:18 PM
Let Squaresoft release Kingdom Hearts first. THEN snub Disney out.

2002-01-29 12:58:34 PM
I don't know, is Fark a multi-nation-mega-corporate-conglomerate?

2002-01-29 01:17:45 PM
JOHNDX, she was in Roger Rabbit right? Yeah, she is a sweetie....for a cartoon, I mean...yeah, a cartoon character...that's all.....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

2002-01-29 01:19:54 PM
Deserves them right. I hope they lose the right to all the anime created by that one guy [My Neighbor Totoro,Spirited Away].

EDITED ANIME SUCKS!

2002-01-29 01:30:05 PM
... Eskenazi and her litigator partner Bert Fields, who has never lost a case.

When did Perry Mason change his name?

2002-01-29 01:30:43 PM
I love you the Disney lawyers say that the termination of the Pooh licensing is unjust and unfair, even though the contract with Disney says that the heirs of Pooh have every right to terminate. Lawyers are soooooooo damn funny sometimes.

2002-01-29 01:32:53 PM
Finiamh, that's a crappy justification. You're basically saying "It's OK with me if you imprison people in sweatshops, pollute the environment, market violence to kids and/or subvert the political process, 'cause you make neat stuff."

2002-01-29 01:57:51 PM
Interesting how Disney refers to Winnie the Pooh as ?Pooh? rather than Winnie... I wonder why?
Oh, wait, I got it figured out...

2002-01-29 02:00:48 PM
Nothing could make me happier than to see Disney lose its ass on this.

Disney sucks. It's sucked for quite some time. Michael Eisner's avariciousness is finally coming home to roost.

Walt Disney is pissing on you, Eisner. Greedy schmuck.

2002-01-29 02:00:48 PM
Yeah, the tick Jessica Rabbit!!!!

mmmmmm, mmmmmm, good
for a cartoon n all, ya know....
