if there is one guy who can make the rules work in his favor it's George Steinbrenner.

like him or not you can't take anything away from the guy when it comes to having a mind for business which includes surrounding himself with the smartest guys in the business.

2004-08-04 09:15:26 AM
Just so you know, when the Yankees play in your crap stadiums, they always sell out the park, or almost.

2004-08-04 09:34:27 AM
But I don't want a new stadium. I like the old one.

2004-08-04 09:38:47 AM
He's reducing the seats by 5,000, but will make up the money by doubling the luxery suites.

The headline bothers me - other teams will take his money but if he finds a way to keep it that does not violate any regulations, why is that wrong? If you had to pay $60 million just because you have more money than other people, would you not try to find a loophole? More power to him.

I agree with EatHam, I'll miss the old stadium.

Smooky I think I heard Michael Kay (I hate him) say once that when the Yankees play a particular team (I want to say the Rangers but I am probably wrong) they sell out. All other games they average about 7K to 13K people only. And people complain about Steiny? He's the only reason your state still has a team (not Smooky's town, your town in general.

Plus I like him because he called Irabu a Fat Horney Toad. That made me chuckle.

2004-08-04 10:16:46 AM
Why not? He's built the Yankees using other teams players.

2004-08-04 10:16:52 AM
Let me just get it out of the way:

Yankees suck!

2004-08-04 10:18:07 AM
Remember when Irabu had to bat, and he took his first swing a literally spun around fell over?

2004-08-04 10:18:19 AM
...and the Expos will get a new stadium that will screw taxpayers for years

2004-08-04 10:20:53 AM
This just makes sitting in Pro Player stadium last year watching my Marlins kick the Yankees ass' that much sweeter.

I think the Yankees biggest problem in the future will be lack of a farm system. They've gutted their lower-level prospects so extensively since 1997 that they have no one left to trade.

dly
2004-08-04 10:22:28 AM
funny the yankees have all of baseball as their farm system......deal with it

"Just so you know, when the Yankees play in your crap stadiums, they always sell out the park, or almost."

Just to let ya know, our crap stadium in Boston, Fenway Park, sells out whether or not the Red Sox happen to be sucking at the moment. It's really fun to go to, just real expensive to watch a game as well. Jsut because our team will never win a World Series ever again doesn't mean we won't go to the park.

Too bad that Boston is basically turning into a suburb of New York, since the Red Sox are partially owned by the New York Times, if I remember correctly.

2004-08-04 10:22:59 AM
look i hate the yankees and steinbrenner. his actions to billy martin at time bordered on asinine, as did martins. anyway, i have to respect a man that signs jose contreras, uses him until he falters(like irabu) and somehow, got another team to trade and take contreras. that deserves a wow, either that or the white sox are the dumbest team in the league.

anyone remember brien taylor? biggest bust in yankee history.

also have to mention the reason the big unit trade to the yankees never went through. the yankees make so many trades over the past few years, their farm system is almost empty with worthy talent. the dbacks wanted some prospects able to play by the end of this year beginning of next, since they would be trading a great player in the twilight of his career. But since the yankees didnt have enough prospects, and wouldnt sweeten the deal, the trade didnt go through. I would have hated it honestly, the big unit on the yanks, it just seems wrong. really wrong if you remember that wild card game, don mattingly's first playoff series, where the mariners won in five games. unit was a big part of that.
/done rambling

2004-08-04 10:23:07 AM
he called Irabu a Fat Horney Toad

It was fat pussy toad, even better. Whatever a pussy toad is.

(Thinks a minute) ewwwwww

2004-08-04 10:24:08 AM
Smooky: the Sox make love to your mouth.

2004-08-04 10:24:13 AM
Do they even need a new stadium? What's wrong with the one they have now? Really, I'm curious.

/I hate you Smooky. So very, very much.

2004-08-04 10:25:00 AM
like building a second death star.

boston sucks

2004-08-04 10:25:15 AM
LOL Maybe he should also start charging rent to visiting teams!

*laughs, points finger* Big Stein, you got us again, you sneaky devil, you!

2004-08-04 10:25:37 AM
...so the Faithful can watched themselves get pwn3d by Bobby Crosby for years to come.

2004-08-04 10:25:54 AM
the giants sell out nearly every game, and nearly every game they play in someone else's city. is that because of the yankees?
the cubs sell out nearly every game as well, last time i checked they have only played the yanks 6 times in the last 100 years or so, not counting spring training.

just for those of you who want to say the yankees are the only team to do this. or its remarkable that this happens. the average yankee fan couldnt name three players on their team, being a bandwagon jumper, its difficult to remember all the players names on all the teams you jump too when they are doing well.

/bored
//hate the yanks

2004-08-04 10:27:28 AM
the yankees will get unit by playoff time. just watch.

2004-08-04 10:28:09 AM
skribble, since you mentioned it:

the new death star found orbitting(sp) saturn.

2004-08-04 10:28:14 AM
Grotfabrieken Rubbishhausen: Silly - where do you think genital warts come from?

2004-08-04 10:30:14 AM
Indeed... they have no one in the minors... no one. Arizona scouted them extensively, and came away with the impression that they don't have a single minor league player that would be expected to make any kind of impact in the majors.

This will be sweet... it will be like getting to watch the fall of the Roman Empire.

And buying a club may not be all that successfull at this point. Look at the core of the current team... Jeter, Rivera and Posada. All three drafted and developed in the Yankee farm system.

You can only go out and buy a team for so long, eventually the bell is going to toll for this franchise, and then its back to the depths until they can rebuild some talent from within.

2004-08-04 10:34:44 AM
yeah massd, remember the 80's, ahhh good times. the yanks sucked and their best player, mattingly, was a player every fan could like. now, ugh.

2004-08-04 10:35:07 AM
Yuck the Fankees

2004-08-04 10:37:17 AM
1. buy BoSox cable channels
2. funnel profits to build new Yankee Stadium
3. Beat Boston in the stadium they paid for

...PRICELESS...

2004-08-04 10:37:20 AM
No doubt an idea he stole from George Costanza!!

/"Jerry, I'm working for the New York Yankees!!"

2004-08-04 10:41:33 AM
Hrmm... maybe my Twins need to look at doing the same thing. It's the only way they'll get a new stadium with Pohlad running the show.

2004-08-04 10:42:04 AM
those geniuses at cbs sold the yankees to steinbrenner for a lousy 10 million,(albeit,1973) big ups to the boss.

oh yeah,

boston sucks.

2004-08-04 10:42:33 AM
I'm a New Yorker and Yankees fan but I don't really like their stadium any more. After visiting new stadiums like Safeco Field and Camden Yards, Yankee Stadium seems like a real dump. I think it would be great for them to get a new place to play as long as the NYC taxpayers don't have to contribute towards it.

2004-08-04 10:44:57 AM
Can't believe I'd ever come to the defense of this tool... but, while the article names Steinbrenner, if you RTFA, any owner can do what he's planning to do - and it appears the Cardinals are already using the "Steinbrenner plan". Gotta think the Mets will do the same.

Btw, while I've never been a Yankee fan, note that the Yankees have only won one World Series in this century. They have a lock on the playoffs, but not much else. You can give the BoSox credit for trying to keep things competitive, even though it hasn't gotten them to the Series.

If you really want to know who the biggest dickhead owner in that division is, all fingers point to Peter Angelos. He had the money to make several runs, but didn't do squat.

And yes, the Yankees are the best road draw, with more than 41,300 average attendance, about 1,900 more than the Cubs. They also have the highest home attendance average, although they're only 8th in percentage of available seats sold at 84.7% (BoSox, Cubs, Giants, Philly, Anaheim, Houston, Padres all fill a higher percentage of seats for home games).

2004-08-04 10:45:18 AM
I was at Yankee Stadium this past Sunday. They need a new park. The lower-level concourses were like mental hospital corridors, sealed tight with no fresh air. People waiting on line to see Monument Park were passing out

2004-08-04 10:46:50 AM
The headline isn't exactly accurate. George wouldn't be spending other teams' money, he'd be spending his money that would otherwise be re-distributed to lower income teams, in MLB's effort to socialize its economy.

That said, I could definitely do without a new stadium. Yankee Stadium is perfect.

2004-08-04 10:50:22 AM
The structural steel in the concrete at the base of yankee stadium is beyond repair, and they'd have to tear down the stadium to try anyways.

Buildings that bear all that weight in such an awkward fashion simply don't last forever.

On a side note, he's not taking anyone's money. He's just not writing checks to other teams that are quite as big. He's still going to be handing out over $150 mil the way things are going, so quit yer biatchin moochers.

2004-08-04 10:54:41 AM
I'm not giving the BoSox anything because their fans piss me off even more than the Yankees fans.

2004-08-04 10:55:53 AM
Baseball is in serious need of financial reform in respect to revenue sharing and salary caps, franchise player rights, etc. This is why baseball is only competitive and interesting for so few teams. It's rediculous to see the way players are passed around the league and a third of a team's starting lineup is new every year. It's a little hard for people to become attached to a team or even a player when they are passed around like some high school slut. It makes for poor competition too. This is why the NFL is much more competitive. They have better (but not great) revenue sharing laws, salary cap, and at least some franchise player system.

2004-08-04 10:56:10 AM
For as much as I hate the Yankees (and I faackin' HATE the Yankees), I've been in NYC for 2 years and I have to say, I like their stadium. Seen some good games, had some good times. It's got a good old school feel, and it's not named 'Preparation-H Field' or 'Viagra Stdium' or some such shiat.

It's still no Fenway though.

BTW, anybody see Remy interview John Henry last night? I don't think he's ever watched a Red Sox game in his life. It was embarrasing.

2004-08-04 10:58:13 AM
123Repeater - Exactly. I was wondering why I never knew that Henry was actually Crispin Glover's father (McFly senior.) He had no clue as to how Veritek was doing, just trying to be "one of the guys" and it wasn't working. I was laughing when Remy and Orsillo started to just ignore him at the end of their conversation.

2004-08-04 10:59:23 AM
sheffboyrd, this has been the most competitive season in decades. Only the NL Central is a lock, with the Yanks only gaining the edge in the AL east recently. Add to that the Wildcard and over 20 teams have a chance.

Besides the NHL which has a ridiculous finals structure, name another league where 2/3 of the teams are in the running 2/3 of the way through the season.

Revenue sharing is WORKING, and owners are finally saying no to free agents asking for A-Rod sized contracts.

Baseball is on the mend. No need to make it into a dynasty free zone like the NFL.

2004-08-04 11:00:00 AM
See? People like 123Repeater are why I love baseball. I hate the Red Sox, but I love their fans. They're real fans.

/gotta get to Fenway

2004-08-04 11:03:46 AM
Oh, and Cardinal, I wanted to kill Bobby Crosby last night. That guy is on fire.

He should be a free agent just about the time Jeter starts getting old, right?

/I keed
//maybe not

Swankywank-

I can see it now. "Henry, you Irish bug!" It makes perfect sense. I thought he was on 'ludes or something. He was totally trying to be down with Remy and Orsillo, and he misquoted every stat he mentioned.

Masper- A lot of people think that Boston fans are a$$holes, but we just get too worked up. It's the only way to deal with a Sox season. People can say what they want, but Fenway sells out every game, no matter who they're playing.

2004-08-04 11:09:33 AM
Sounds like instead of screwing the taxpayer on stadiums, he's screwing the other teams. Fine with me, he's sodomizing stupid rich people instead of the rest of us.

2004-08-04 11:10:10 AM
"Smooky I think I heard Michael Kay (I hate him) say once that when the Yankees play a particular team (I want to say the Rangers but I am probably wrong) they sell out. All other games they average about 7K to 13K people only. "

Actually average attendance this year is 47,000 people. I see no need for a new stadium. I was at last nights SOLD OUT game, and dropped $120. Its not like he's losin money. The Yankees are a money making machine. Not to mention, Yankee stadium should be a historical landmark.

/Go Yanks, Leave the stadium alone!

2004-08-04 11:11:40 AM
Why not? He's been building his team using other Teams' players for years. Why not use their money for a stadium too?

They're still going to get rolled in the playoffs every year.

2004-08-04 11:13:58 AM
"They're still going to get rolled in the playoffs every year."

By who? Barry Bonds?

2004-08-04 11:17:41 AM
Go George, GO! ;o)
I agree they need a new stadium, but it's going to be sad to see the old one demolished - a lot of nostalgia and ghosts in there. I'll miss it.

2004-08-04 11:20:26 AM
bgirlperi, why do you think they need a new stadium?? Its a beautiful stadium as is. George just wants more luxury boxes.

2004-08-04 11:21:07 AM
They're still going to get rolled in the playoffs every year.

Dumbest. Statement. Evar.

How'd your Pads do against the Yanks last time, biatch?
