A chlorine or sweet smell? Please be a little more specific. I've smelt chlorine, and it ain't sweet. On the other hand, there is something that DOES smell sweet -- and I'd have smoked a lot more of it, except that it makes me sneeze uncontrollably.

/Was born in Mercer County, adjacent to at least one of these two.

It took me a while to sort out the reference to "bean supper". I associate beans with brown clouds.

mutt,
Chlorine put into swimming pools can react funny with improper handling or any other chemicals getting in (ammonia is a problem), causing it to vaporize into pure chorine gas, which is fatal if inhaled.

I was waiting for a quote that the Austin's plant in nearby Mars, PA had nothing to do with it. The plant is upwind and within about ~5 miles from where the mysterious cloud was sighted. Austin's makes, amongst other products, bleach and ammonia for household and industrial use.

A brown-green cloud caused by inversion? Riiiiight.

In related news: I used to work at a Renaissance faire in the middle of dairy cow country. Every morning it was foggy, and the fog wouldn't dissipate until mid-afternoon. Finally I asked one of the locals at a Rite-Aid (while in costume. Ah, the looks I got) why it was always foggy. She said "Ah, yeah. We call that the 'Yellow Mist'."

Apparently, because there's so many damn cows (you can't throw a stick and miss one) in the area, they're always pissing all over the ground. This creates a lot of warm moist air in the middle of the night (as a result of evaporating cow piss) which turns into a dense ground fog. Fog, caused by cow piss. I breathed that shiat for 8 days.

I don't work that faire anymore.

The National Weather Service suspects the cloud may have been the result of an inversion.

Well, I suspect that the cloud was caused by some redneck kids and a smoke grenade, but the cloud held together for a long time due to the inversion.

Yeah your government wouldn't have anything to hide. And with the way the clean air regulations have been rolled back whatever the hell it is more than likely is with in "safe levels anyway. Good luck with those mutie babies and all that cancer.

[The National Weather Service suspects the cloud may have been the result of an inversion.]

Yeah. Sure. Nature always produces yellow -- green clouds that smell vaguely of chlorine. Chlorine gas is yellow-green. It ain't nice to be caught in either. Some company somewhere is covering up something real fast.
