Yay! We're going to see them at the Ford Ampitheatre this sunday here in Tampa. Heard it's a great show. We've both been longtime Cure fans.(I'm 42,she's 47)

bbcrackmonkey - "Man, people who choose styles arbitrarily based on the music they listen to suck a sack of sloppy cocks."

You say that like its a bad thing. Makes their guys meek, and their girls easier. Goths define the term 'mostly harmless'

Also, the song that was licensed for the Fiat Punto was an instrumental version of "InBetween Days".

That dvd is awesome (I wish I could have been there), but I hope you'll agree that the real "trilogy" of albums is Seventeen Seconds, Faith, and Pornography.

/Am I the only one who finds the term "wiggers" to be just as racist as the real N-bomb?

funny story,

While they were in town on tour, one of our local dj's was driving around and saw Robert Smith in the car next to him at a light. The DJ proceeds to have a minor freak out, pointing and laughing. Robert pulls out an egg and beans the guy's window. The DJ couldn't even manage to get mad because it was so surreal, but he was quick to add, "Who rides around with a carton of eggs to throw at people that laugh at them?"

'Man, people who choose styles arbitrarily based on the music they listen to suck a sack of sloppy cocks.'

Oh I agree, it's best to choose your style based on something sensible like what all the other SIGMA TAU brothers are doing.

In thereoy you should choose your style on peronsal taste and what you like. And more importantly to whomever said the Liz Phair wasn't cute what do you find cute, livestock? a sack full of doorknobs? Either your blind, gay or insane. I would hit it like a truck!

I have to say, though, of all the bands I listened to back in the '80s, only one of them still manages to find it's way into my car or home stereo on a daily basis:

jam econo, motherf*ckers.

Ensemble Unicorn Vienna
Wolgemut
Kikki-Rikki
Radiohead
Bjork
Toronto Consort
Piffaro
Estradasphere
Mr. Bungle
Farmers Market

At the moment? The Sea and Cake. For about 3/4 of that list, I'm sure most of you went "Huh?"

"Disintegration is the best album of all time!!!!!"
- Kyle, to Robert Smith, after fighitng Mecha Streisand.

From the makers of Southpark no less. They *heart* The Cure. Robert Smith was the first celeb they ever talked to that made them totally nervous. That was one of the most exciting moments in their careers.

"I couldnt believe we were on the phone with Robert Smith." (i think Trey said that, dont remember)

If you put on Head on the Door and it doesnt take you back to a better time, then you didnt grow up in my world.

Standing on the beach
With a gun in my hand
Staring at the sea
Staring at the sand
Staring down the barrel
At the arab on the ground
I can see his open mouth
But I hear no sound

I'm alive
I'm dead
I'm the stranger
Killing an arab

I can turn
And walk away
Or I can fire the gun
Staring at the sky
Staring at the sun
Whichever I chose
It amounts to the same
Absolutely nothing

I'm alive
I'm dead
I'm the stranger
Killing an arab

I feel the steel butt jump
Smooth in my hand
Staring at the sea
Staring at the sand
Staring at myself
Reflected in the eyes
Of the dead man on the beach
The dead man on the beach

I'm alive
I'm dead
I'm the stranger
Killing an arab

for another comment...saw Plant and Page tour back in the mid 90's -
Pol Thompson was the back up guitarist and they played 'Lullaby' - did a really good job with Plant doing some amazing vocals

Father_Jack - happy to oblidge.

And the 80s it a tough contest. Erasure's 'Take a Chance On Me' was proundly flaming, yet the Priest wore LOT of leather and spikes.

So a buddy of mine wants me to go to a local Goth club with him. He's this terminally happy guy with long blonde hair and a penchant for Hawaiian shorts. He fits though, dunno why. I'm this obvious past-30 guy with thinning hair, khaki pants, and a green polo shirt. Yeah, I fit.

So while he wanders around and dances with every pretty gothette there (to the dismay of his wife), I play pool and make snide jokes to my non-dancing friends. Then I notice this mousey gothette following me. I ignore her and she follows me around for two hours, obviously wanting to talk to me. Wierd, shrug it off. Then I notice another one. Then some goth dude comes up and offers me his spiked collar. Aroo? Turn to my happy-goth buddy, and he says it's because the guy wants me to collar him. Y'know, like a pooch.

Wierd.

The best part was that it's a "gay-bar" (someone else's term *shrug*) on every night but Goth night. I was amazed, never having been into a "gay-bar". It was the single cleanest and nicest nightclub I have ever been in, with the coolest damn staff I've met. Homosexuals apparently know how to run a damn fine bar.

Goth's are alright though. Some of them gothettes are tasty too...

'I don't dislike the Cure, they have some cool songs, but I bought my girlfriend the Staring At The Sea singles collection (she loves the Cure) and noticed a small sticker on the CD cover, it said: "The song 'Killing An Arab' is in no way trying to suggest violence or an intolerance toward Arab people."

First song on the greatest hits disk: Killing An Arab. Stupid marketing maneuver #1.'

I guess the only stupider maneuver would be imagining for one second that you can find six americans in one place familiar with Camus. (sigh)

I believe the tracks on Staring at The Sea are laid down chronologically. Can you guess which track they recorded first?

The Cure's still an amazing band, after all these years. I have yet to hear a Cure song I didn't like.

And even though he's old enough to be my dad, I'd still fark Robert Smith.

First off, whoever calls The Cure goth have no idea what they are talking about. Their original fans were Wavers, who continued well into the 90's. At that point, the Doc Martin, shaved head look came into play at any TRUE Waver show (Depeche Mode, Morissey, The Cure, Jesus and Mary Chain, etc.).

Once the Goths developed, someone how they got lumped with The Cure because they starting hanging with Wavers and kinda/sorta wore something like Robert Smith. Hence, by leeching onto the alternative music crowd, they found a crowd that was accepting of their Gothness, as the alt crowd accepts everything except maybe an obnoxious jock or something. REAL Goth music is unmistakeable (if not intolerable).

So, meh, The Cure has been around for at least one generation before the evolution of the Goth movement. I know this, because I am a long time Cure fan and was perplexed at seeing Goths (who were at least 5 or 6 years younger than me) being lumped with the Cure.

Before I step off my soap box, The Cure rules. I hear their influence on so MANY different bands today that it is almost indecent. I hard a song by Korn not too long ago that I SWORE was the cure until the singing started. Not to mention how much EMO and the other crap coming up has electronic built into that is SO Cure or DM.

/Give Props to my man Robert Smith!
//"Killing an Arab" comes with a disclaimer saying it in no way promotes violence, but rather is almost word, for word, based on Camus' "The Stranger" (yes, I am an American who had to read it in high school).
///What other singer in history was so DAMN proud of wearing supermarket, no-name, sneakers like Robert Smith? NO ONE! Take that you Goths!

Ooh, jamspopon, check out Bloc Party's Website. It's the most ludicriously po-faced, pseudo intellectual nonsense since the Manics released Masses Against the Classes.

Awww, they think they're Communists.

I was a Goth/Industrial DJ in DC from 96-2001 (Xian From Industrail Revolution@Ballroom), and I will be the first to point out that Goths, by and large can be pretty self depricating. Now, when the 'scene' starts to take itself seriously, well, fark em. Let em all march off cliffs.

Anyway, it just makes me sad that people won't evolve if they are going to continue to put out music.

Which is why I've moved on to Trip Hop and Drum n' Bass.

Anathama,

now, I may be wrong, but the presence of colorful tattoos and nautical stars would probably classify those girls more around the punk/hardcore breed of attention whores...
Doesn't make much of a difference, they're still "way deeper," than you, and "misunderstood," and i'm sure there's a good amount of cutters among them

moonduck: If you are ever in Frankfurt (Germany) I highly suggest the Blue Angel. It is the nicest gay bar ever. I've never seen a seedy bar on the outside look so clean on the inside. We went not knowing it was a gay bar....(I'm straight and so was everybody I was with except one guy and he just moved to Heidelberg and knew nothing about Frankfurt)

The bartenders were a hotty lesbian and a really manly gay guy (he looked like a biker...he was HUGE (muscular not fat) and had tats everywhere...gay as a $3 bill though...Kind of reminded me of Big Gay Al)...Anyway, the place was nice. I couldn't believe how clean it was and how kept everything looked. The strangest part was people knew we were straight and we very accepting...the people were really mellow about the whole deal (although one dude kept making fun of my American accented German..it was all in good fun...I think).

I did know them quite well way back when. I saw them live a few times up on U street somewhere when they were still booking, and they always were horrible.

No, my biggest claim to shame is that the band Godhead used my garage to practice in Alexandria VA. And that I had the misfortune of having to live with their goddamn a$$hole of a german keyboard player.

I have even better taste in music. ;P

The Cure's new album is prolly one of the best of the year, but it's not one of my favourites. Amazing it may be (sounds like KMKMKM to me), but it's not their best work, as many have claimed. I can't wait until the LP version I ordered came in, since the tracks that were left off the NA release are apparently even better.
