Ugh, now the stone roses - they're ok, but THAT'S a band that lulls me to sleep. I can't help it. (not in a bad way)

"Goth is just a way for ugly people to seem interesting"

true dat. unless you live in a castle you are not "goth", you are probably just a tragic dress-up who belongs in the chorus of an amateur production of camelot.

...people might just respect them.

or run like hell. I know I would.

Admit it - you've used mascara.

I wish that it would be that easy, but the truth is even worse -- French Literature Major back in my college days.

/La Peste is better, and the only book that actually made me quesy reading it.

The Stone Roses are probably close to my favourite band, but Ian Brown is not the best lyricist alive!!

Yeah dude you are so rebellious; trucker hats are gay, wallet chains are assed out, and "Jesus is my homeboy" T-Shirts are so corny. I can tell your post in completely serious and not at all sarcastic. I also choose to ignore your follow up post explaining your sarcasm. You are the one that is the loser, and I am the cool one.

Sincerely Yours,

BlindMan

Morrisey = teh suck

That includes The Smiths too. They would have been okay (but never great) with a different singer.

You are a dumbass.

Funny.

Trouble with attractive goth chicks is, ain't one of them wouldn't look better without all the goth crap.

To go slightly off-topic, what's everybody listening to right now?

No points for being wilfully obscure. Many points for making me think of good bands.

2004-07-22 04:01:31 PM
I'll say it again, just 'cos I feel like it.
DRUNK FRONTMEN NAMED BOB:

Pollard > Smith.

And when he says his band is breaking up after an album, he means it.

/I do like both bands, though.

I'd already have tix for the cure's tour if Placebo had been on the bill. I still might go to see Mogwai and Interpol. Fat Bob puts on a good show, but the new album doesn't do much for me and I think I've grown out of a lot of the old stuff.

'And here I was all ready to believe the hundreds of music journalists that believe Morrissey is one of the most talented lyricists alive and that the Smiths were instrumental in bringing musicianship back to british rock...

Replace Morrissey with Ian Brown and the Smiths with the Stone Roses and that sentence makes sense.'

I love the Stone Roses too, and it's generally a good point, but I will not accept that Ian Brown is a very talented lyricist.

DarrenJames

I already apologized for the very stupid mistake on my part. I hope you can quit crying now, if not maybe we can all agree to listen to the Cure together?

Thin & average goth chicks = teh hot
Fat goth chicks = vast majority

2004-07-22 04:06:15 PM
People need to stop hatin' on the goth kids. A vast majority of them will grow out of it. I went through a goth phase, and felt very misunderstood about the whole thing. I always thought the point of being goth was to make fun of whole thing and yourself by being so obvious about it that it was just funny. Cliches are pretty funny things, and its fun to see how close you can come to the cliche.

After I was goth, i became a hippy, then really preppy, all just to make fun of the people that did it. That is why everyone fulfills cultural cliche's...noone is really serious about it.

/right?

I am listening to Biopsy right now. In a moment I shall be listening to Hocico.

I'm an undercover goth durring the week, kind of like a gothic "Sleeper Agent" sent durring 1986, to look normal and live undetected in normal society untill I am called upon to wear black once again.

I am member of the gothic reserves on the weekend. I get to dress up in my gothic uniform once a month and do my drills. I think it's important to have fat, ugly, non-pasty brown haired wannabees mixed in with the real goth crowd, because it makes teh real goths look better. That's my job as a gothic reserve, really, to help the real goths feel more superior to rest of the ugly troglodites who can't wear cool neato boots we got in London last year, with dyejob black hair and mascara 24/7, and still maintain a job that lets us pay the stinking bills and drive a car thats older than some POS built in 1995.

But I digress.

A real goth, won't admit to being goth, but everygoth they are more goth than that guy over there. Even if they won't admit to being a goth.

/currently writting my goth spotting field guide.

"Trouble with attractive goth chicks is, ain't one of them wouldn't look better without all the goth crap."

Goth is just a way for ugly people to seem interesting.

Being a goth (and a comparatively old one, I've been at it for eight years or so in the UK), this makes me want to shout "Just goes to show, you'll never understand us!"

The problem with that is that it makes me into even more of a caricature.

"Dead Can Dance does rock. Most stuff on 4AD records does...that and Projekt www.projekt.com"

maybe I just bought the wrong album. Agreed on projekt though. good label.

Pardeekid:

The Castle is still absolutely bangin' on Mondays, and even more crazy on Thursdays. Ususally can't move around by 1:00 on Thursdays. Those college kids just can't get enough of the music I grew up on! 'Course, DCFC, Interpol, The Hives, The Darkness, etc., etc. are also in heavy rotation there. That, and they play the videos for all the songs, which is teh cool. DJ Rob finds some mind-blowingly obscure old shiat.

2004-07-22 04:08:08 PM
martijn and Blindman,
Yeah I don't think he's that great of a lyricist either. I was more making the point of the Stone Roses being one of the most musically talented British acts ever.

Alright, martijn, I'll bite. Currently I'm listening to "kind Woman" by Buffalo Springfield, vocals by Ritchie Furray. Simply sublime. I'd cut off my own left testicle for a voice like that. Come to think of it, I might have to, he sings awful high.

Ha! You didn't go to my school, where the Goths were ultra-serious about their Gothicity. They formed a short-lived club called Dante's Escape Route that catered to skinny/fat albino outcasts who wrote volumes of bad poetry. The club was dissolved when it was discovered to have zero merit.

Super Furry Animals - Phantom Power
I highly recommend it.

Being a goth (and a comparatively old one, I've been at it for eight years or so in the UK), this makes me want to shout "Just goes to show, you'll never understand us!"

you have to see american goths in their native environment to realise how risible they are, particularly during summer.

2004-07-22 04:12:13 PM
Now iTunes Partay-shuffle has me listening to "Boxing" by Ben Folds Five.

2004-07-22 04:12:57 PM
I am currently listening to the Guided By Voices "Demons and Painkillers" compilation of B-sides. Maybe that's what started the Pollard tangent. Listening to "Running Off With the Fun City Girls," and I saw some comment on Fat Bob. I originally thought they meant the Fat Bob from Dayton.

Dante's Escape Route

Was that in the city or out in the country somewhere?
In the uk we have a marked division. The city goths go clubbing, take drugs, listen to music, that sort of stuff. Having a blast.
The country goths look the same, but they prefer the moping and the poetry....

I could really go for listening to "Pharcyde" right now.

About growing out of goth...its true, when you realize you have to dress for the workplace, you go preppy real quick.

Gothnet, do you like "This Mortal Coil"?

Lady Beryl-

I think the Terry Pratchett character is a reference to Neil Gaiman...also beloved by goths.

2004-07-22 04:14:35 PM
Wow, big ups to iTunes. It just hit me with "Dear Mr. Fantasy" by little Stevie Winwood and Traffic. Smooth as this rum I am now drinking.

Cheers all!

What I've listened to reading this thread -
R. Kelly - Happy People
Serge Gainbourg - Mambo Miam Miam
Foreigner - Cold as Ice
Jay-Z - Big Pimpin'

2004-07-22 04:15:46 PM
I'm listening to Tuxicity.

Britney Spears is such a remarkable recording artist. She's not just a singer; she's a writer, she's an arranger, she composes her own music, she produces her own albums, she directs, she choreographs, she's what we in the industry call "an artiste"; so versatile, so multi-talented, so.. so.. GOD I WANNA fark HER!!

I could so go for some Pharcyde right now.

/Quentin's on his way with another j, and it's ok... everything's ok
