I thought Tiny Tim was dead.

Kattan: Hello, I'm Azrael Abyss.
Shannon: And I'm Circy Nightshade. Welcome to Goth Talk.
Kattan: We should have been born in the 17th century.
Shannon: Yes. I would have been a crow, and my mornfull call would be "Caw...Caw...Caw."
Kattan: And I would be the wind. And I would go "Wooo! Wooo!"
Shannon: Anyway... How was your weekend?
Kattan: Forlorn... I had to work a double shift at Cinnabuns.

I have noticed that likeing the cure is not universal amongst goths. That'd be 'cos it's not 'classic goth' music. Though I don't want to get into the old old debate on what goth music actually is.....

Personally I absolutely love 'em.

"You've never actually heard The Cure, have you? That's ok, go back to listening to ... Death Cab For Cutie or whatever stupid shiat you listen to."

Hey now... I like the cure AND death cab... is that so wrong?

there are more people on here with the word "goth" in their handle than I thought.

There is no CURE for crappy music!

Heh. I remember the good ol' days of going to the Nile Theatre in Mesa, AZ for their Goth night on Fridays. I tended to do the "fancily dresed goth" thing, dressed up in a three piece suit with black band-collared shirt, with my leather duster over that, sometimes a black fedora, my black steel-toed boots (though thoroughly polished), my sword cane, and some really small-lensed sunglasses. Instead of the usual pentacle I had a silvery medical biohazard pendant hanging from a silvery chain around my neck. Oh, and the Djarum International unfiltered cloves with the zippo lighter with the rose engraved on the side...

It's still amazing to me how well this worked to get the ladies home. 'course, I was usually the only guy with long hair that wasn't black, and since it is red I think that caught the attention of the gals over all of the black hair.

/so goth my dog barks "Bauhaus!"

I still like old Cure. With a occasional exceptions most of the new stuff isn't very impressive at all.

And as for Mr. Smith, either lose some weight or lose the image.

"Old, fat and goth is no way to go through life, son."

2004-07-22 03:19:07 PM
not a goth, never have been, but the Cure are great.
Robert Smith sounds like a really funny guy.
(that fear of flying bit was genious)

2004-07-22 03:19:14 PM
Oooh. Speaking of Morrissey, I'm liking that new song of his:
-------
America
your head's too big,
Because America,
Your belly's too big
And I love you,
I just wish you'd stay where you is

In America,
The land of the free,
they said,
And of opportunity,
In a just and a truthful way
But where the president,
Is never black, female or gay,
And until that day
You've got nothing to say to me,
To help me believe

In America,
It brought you the hamburger,
Well America you know where,
You can shove your hamburger
And don't you wonder,
Why in Estonia they say,
Hey you,
Big fat pig
You fat pig,
You fat pig

Steely Blue eyes
with no love in them,
Scan The World,
And a humourless smile,
With no warmth within,
Greets the world
And I,
I have got nothing,
To offer you
No-no-no-no-no
Just this heart deep and true,
Which you say you don't need

See with your eyes,
Touch with your hands,
please,
Hear through your ears,
Know in your soul,
please
For haven't you me with you now?
And I love you,
I love you,
I love you,
And I love you,
I love you,
I love you

I wondered what Alice Cooper was up to these days.

Actually, you can find Alice on the golf course.

Can somebody take Robert out into the sun. He makes Alice look tan.

2004-07-22 03:20:14 PM
Goth? I just thought he was trying to look like a chick who doesn't wash her hair very often.

2004-07-22 03:20:17 PM
I don't dislike the Cure, they have some cool songs, but I bought my girlfriend the Staring At The Sea singles collection (she loves the Cure) and noticed a small sticker on the CD cover, it said: "The song 'Killing An Arab' is in no way trying to suggest violence or an intolerance toward Arab people."

First song on the greatest hits disk: Killing An Arab. Stupid marketing maneuver #1.

2004-07-22 03:20:56 PM
I always thought goths were people who listened to death metal, played Vampire:The Masquerade, and of course did the obligatory outfit/makeup BS. People who listened to The Cure were usually just old and had crappy taste in music ;-)

2004-07-22 03:21:07 PM
I used to work with someone who used to deliver Robert Smith's papers. Apparently he owned a pink Ferrari. Ver goth.

2004-07-22 03:21:10 PM
Boy, Robert Smith has really let himself go since retiring from the Vikings.

2004-07-22 03:21:15 PM
Well, i was totally gothed out in 7th grade...and I never liked The Cure...always sounded a little contrived for my taste.

/But I did like switchblade symphony and type o negative.

2004-07-22 03:21:29 PM
*sigh* if there's one thing that rings true in that old "goth talk" sketch, it was jim breuer's "older brother" character. the way he would beat on azrael, yet 30 seconds later, be telling ariana how hot she was. a lesson i learned too late, alas : goth guy - pathetic joke; goth girl - hot (or fat, as stated above). damn, such truth...
oh, and "disintigration is the greatest album ever!"

2004-07-22 03:22:05 PM
But didn't you know? "Killing An Arab" is marketing code for "We have another CD coming out".

2004-07-22 03:22:18 PM
Only chicks can get away with the goth thing, and only if they don't go too heavy with it. I guess if you can't tell if they are going goth or punk, then they are still in control. The goth thing just does not work for guys, they all look like idiotic fruitcakes. If I ever have a son, I will slap the lipstick right off his face if he tries to do the goth thing. I'd make sure he understands that he will never get laid if he keeps that up.

Oh, and DarrenJames, trucker hats are stupid. They don't look cool and their 15 minutes was over about 5 minutes ago. I never like them. I used to consider them acceptable on the right person, but its just assinine seeing every teeny-bopper high school girl wearing one.

2004-07-22 03:22:18 PM
Van Morrisey rules! I love that song 'Brown Eyed Girl'. Man, that song is goth to the core.

2004-07-22 03:22:22 PM
they left me hanging, how did a chubby guy named Robert EVER get the nickname "Fat Bob"?

2004-07-22 03:22:42 PM
I've never thought of Robert Smith as a goth. That's the way he's always been.

...and Radiohead does NOT suck! Take that back right now!

Smookyfufu

Whiny teen angst goth devil music "I eat brains! RAWR i'm Evil" music SUCKS.

I'm assuming you've never bothered to listen to a song by The Cure before sharing this valuable insight?

2004-07-22 03:23:14 PM
if morrissey could right a decent song without jonny marr then i might listen to him. As he has been on his own for quite a few years all hope is probably gone

2004-07-22 03:23:27 PM
reggiemiller - first thing I though of as well. BTW, isn't he a doctor now?

2004-07-22 03:23:34 PM
I farking detest Morrissey. He makes me want to grab him by the lapels and scream @him: "Take a goddamn Prozac and STFU already!"

2004-07-22 03:23:36 PM

2004-07-22 03:24:16 PM
Man, there is nothing sadder than a chubby aging Goth trying to remain relevant and cool, but too stubborn to put away his goth crap.

2004-07-22 03:24:43 PM
"But Darren, its not about trying to look cool, its about rebelling and being different."

Awesome! ... but apparently its also about having a severe case of swamp ass and the complexion of a cancer patient. I prefer being a rebel in shorts, a clever T-Shirt (like one that says "Jesus is My Homeboy"), and a trucker hat. (wallet chain optional, but punking people mandatory)

So what you're saying is, the key to rebellion is to wear a uniform? Congradulations (to you and the poodle walking goth)

2004-07-22 03:25:05 PM
The one that always springs to mind was when I bet someone that I could go around the outside of a hotel jumping from balcony to balcony. It took about an hour, and once I got to a certain point it seemed farther to go back to where I could hear Mary screaming.

To jump around a hotel from balcony to balcony has to require some major Goth Balls. Mad props to the crazy drunk guy with the lipstick.

2004-07-22 03:25:16 PM
Morrisey = teh suck

That includes The Smiths too. They would have been okay (but never great) with a different singer.

2004-07-22 03:25:23 PM
I was never a goth but I did enjoy the Cure back in the day, even went all the way to Detroit to see em in concert back in 95 or 94. 2 hits of acid later my friend and I were in the parking lot wondering what the fark we were doing in Detroit at a Cure concert. Damn I miss random road trips!

2004-07-22 03:25:28 PM
What's with these old fat farktards like Robert Smith and Morrissey still trying to act like disaffected youths? Did they run out of money or what? It's called evolution, you idiots. You oughta try it.

Of course, I suppose seeing Smith and Morrissey looking and acting the exact way they did twenty years ago is better than watching Liz Phair's anti-Britney act where she is trying to show that girl singers can be smart and cute. Uh, newsflash Liz. You were never smart and you still aren't cute.

2004-07-22 03:25:36 PM
And there's my answer. Thank you for Killing an Arab!

First song on the greatest hits disk: Killing An Arab. Stupid marketing maneuver
Staring at the sea has been out for years before the current conflict. Killing an arab is a reference to the book "To kill an arab", which I believe is a philosophical classic that inspired robert smith when he was at school/university.

Your comment just makes you sound ignorant.

To which you wrote:

Now, with you placing them on par with Kenny G. and Garth Brooks - I'm assuming YOU'VE never heard Death Cab For Cutie? Ugh.

What the heck, here's another one...

2004-07-22 03:26:11 PM
Best Goth story I have is from a trip to Hershey park (The Sweetest Place on Earth). I was waiting in line for a rollercoaster and two Goth kids were in front of me and they both had tears tattooed next to their eye's and they were dressed all in black on a 90+ degree day. Made me chuckle inside.

2004-07-22 03:26:26 PM
Trouble

Youre obviously not a fan of sarcasm, I thought when I said "punking is mandatory" and then described the Ashton Kutcher uniform while saying I was a rebel, people would have picked up on it.

It appears you have gotten punk'd....and "served" because im actually breakdance fighting your message right now.

2004-07-22 03:26:31 PM
On the subject on the Cure, they had one of the coolest videos for "Why Can't I Be You". If you don't remember, they had guys dancing in costumes representing each word of the title (e.g. a giant "Y" and a "U", etc.) For the "Can't" the symbol was a giant pair of lips...vertically positioned. Think of saying can't with a British accent.

Can't believed no censors objected to this.

2004-07-22 03:26:50 PM
Full marks to breakfast and Trouble for missing Darren's point completely

2004-07-22 03:26:51 PM
I'd rather be a goth than a walking billboard for Abercrombie and Fitch.

I swear, seeing groups of guys and girls walking around with the name of the company they bought the shirt from on their chest makes me sick to my stomach.

2004-07-22 03:27:11 PM
Christ, he looks like a cross between Alice Cooper and Meatloaf.

The first thing that popped into my head when I saw those pics was that skit on SNL that Molly Shannon and Chris Kattan did, where they had a goth talk show... does anyone have any pics of that? It would be greatly appreciated.
/also likes the Cure

A) scroll up
B) yeah...its kinda funny that you observed and mentioned this. it also makes it glaringly obvious that youre a pretty young guy. after all, robert pretty much INVENTED the whole new-wave goth look.

i find it pretty pathetic that people are ripping on him for how he looks. he's had the same look and style since like '82! he didnt give a farking shiat what you thought of his style before half of you stopped thinking bigbird was the coolest. you can't rip on a dude for dressing up all goth when he did it before you anyone knew what goth looks like. he could play guitar with his penis painted to look like avril lavign and still be more respectable than half the shiate popular today.

/not counting dead and euronomous

2004-07-22 03:27:32 PM

Ian Curtis is dead, but Robert Smith still walks this earth.

No justice in this world.

2004-07-22 03:27:33 PM
I once heard an interview with Henry Rollins. He suggested Robert Smith "make all possible haste to the gym" to get in shape and lose the stupid make up.

Made me laugh.
