This site is neither tasteless or gross. It is quite funny look at news stories of the day. all not safe for work information is clearly labled as such. It is also heavily moderated and all objectional posts are removed from the message boards swiftly.

I have no idea what that site is, but why would you even want anyone who uses some sort of filtered service posting here? That would just mean they're another Unpopular Commie Troll or censor-crazy religious nut (or their employer installed a filtering service, in which case GET BACK TO WORK). We should all just give Drew five dollars instead of trying to get Fark out of the shiat-list.

Fark.com is a news related site. Most people use it to find interesting news all over the world with out having to look at each and every website (which could take hours) just to find interesting articles.

OK, I did it. I mentioned how Fark consistently posts breaking news before even so-called "real" news sites and how when every news sites' servers were crashing on 9/11 it provided an ongoing source of news and support for those unable to get news anywhere else.

I said "This is an educational forum for intelligent conversation, why in God's name would you block it"

Tasteless? Sure. Gross? Not often, and the mods do a pretty good job of deleting anything that might be construed as unduly offensive. Tasteless/Silly might be better, or maybe Tasty/Filling.

I don't think the justification is Fark content, but rather the amount of time and resources that an employee can waste on this site. Not that I am goofing off or anything.

I'm glad I'm out of high school where they used this thing. Do they not care in universities? Or am I just lucky that mine doesn't seem to have any filtering?

Just FYI (since it was featured on NPR today). The Internet Protection act (correct me if I have that part wrong) required that schools and libraries use some type of filtering software. Bess is commonly used in many schools. They have a list of restricted sites; those not on the list are reviewed by their staff and added to the list as appropriate. Most kids complain that it only allows sites about Barney and the like to get through. Other kids complain that it doesn't let boobies through.

Scoots is right. If the kids want hate/boobies they can find it ANYWHERE on the internet. There is most definitely more "bad" content than "good" content. I don't read the comments much because they're so pointless and most people are complete morons. But a kid reading comments for things that tickle their fancy is simply uncommon. I see kids all of the time, but they aren't talking about the FARK comments sections.

Your kids could go do a GIS for sex, click to turn off the filter and have themselves some pornography. Then, once they're done doing that, they could easily go somewhere, find out how to make a bomb to kill one of their "different" friends and continue on their way. THEN, they delete the history, temporary internet files, and cookies. You never know anything about it.

Teach your kids the difference between wrong and right so that they have morals and beliefs. That way, reading the comments will not sway their beliefs in a durastically warped direction. Learn to teach them wrong and right before you try to control the world around them. Censorship won't allow anyone to view the mistakes of the past.

I'm going to start doing a spell check before I post... drastically... Fix any other mistakes yourselves.

Fark.com ... is actually not a de-facto message board, but an environment where people have the opportunity to voice their opionons, and if they agree with the benevolent-dictators-in-situ, they become visible to the rabble. As to the second issue, tastelessness, you hit the nail on the exact mathematical centre of its head. (PS: disclaimer: one of the two statements preceeding this disclaimer is factually untrue)
