Half-off on piano wire at Gunter's hardware!!!

2004-07-20 09:52:44 AM
Well, I'll be jiggered.

Too bad it didn't work.

Once all the Germans were war-like and mean
But that couldn't happen again.
We taught them a lesson in 1918
And they've hardly bothered us since then!

Using a bomb on Hitler? No dice -- you at least need a chaingun.

2004-07-20 09:54:31 AM
It worked for me!

2004-07-20 09:54:44 AM
That's because Germans love David Hasselhoff.

Only 1/3 of the Germans surveyed thought this was a good thing, huh? Unglaublich

2004-07-20 09:56:14 AM
Or maybe that's what the Germans would have us believe...

2004-07-20 09:57:00 AM
Damn straight they're celebrating it. Anything less and they'd be labelled as anti-semitic.

2004-07-20 09:58:54 AM
Yeah, I have to say.... Hitler was a terrible person and all - you won't get any argument from me there - but /celebrating/ any assassanation attempt seems.... well, a bit morbid.

The slogan promoted by the Nazis that they were 'traitors' had a long-lasting effect,'' Weiss said. But a recent poll by Der Spiegel magazine found that 33 percent of Germans now admire the Stauffenberg plotters and another 40 percent hold them in high esteem, she noted.

Wait... so 27% of Germans think trying to blow up Hitler was a bad thing?

Do they think they should blindly follow the direction their nation is going, regardless of how screwed up that direction is? Sounds like a typical Republican...

/Godwinated?

2004-07-20 10:01:18 AM
maybe they're celebrating the principle of the thing

Was this the plot that Rommel was involved in?

It's Springtime for Hitler and Germany!

Was this the plot that Rommel was involved in?

It's the plot that he was accused of being in and eventually led to his suicide, but IIRC the jury's still out on whether or not he actually supported the plot in any meaningful way.

Headline: Germans Urged to Remember Nazi Resistors

Yeah, because the Nazi capacitors are getting all the attention...

/got nothin'

Was this the plot that Rommel was involved in?

Rommel WAS implicated, but I don't think it was ever proven that he was involved...

We (the Germans) are not celebrating as in: "Yeah, let's got to the Stauffenberg-Memorial-Rave".
We are commemorating some highranking officers seeing the truth and trying to do the right thing.

And building a bomb with only one hand and only three fingers on the others left is a thing in it self.

2004-07-20 10:10:54 AM
well... That headline is a bit misleading (just RTFA). Celebrating the resistance to the NAZIs is understandable.

2004-07-20 10:11:59 AM
She dosen't know it (or me) yet, but we are getting married. As soon as I can track her down.

Its like the 'merikan cliché about the French liking Jerry Lewis.
I can assure they have never heard of that stupid prat, and I rekon the yanks are mixing him up with Jacques Tati.

(i think jacques tati is equally crap,...but there you go)

If Hitler had been successfully assassinated, then his late night talk show with special guest BRAD PITT! would have never happened!

If the July 20 attempt had succeeded, and if Pontius Pilate had left Jesus alone, history would have been a fark of a lot different.

it's only stalking after the restraining order has been issued.

2004-07-20 10:25:41 AM
... and the if OJ Simpson low-speed chase hadn't pre-empted David Hasselhoff's breakthrough North American television special, we'd... well... probably still not be fans of his.

No no, stalking is what happens once I've tracked her down; I need to find her to stalk her. And even then, I'll only stalk her if she's still carrying all that beer.

/picky stalker

I think Germany should call July 20 "What have you done to kill a dictator today, day?"

/owns at least 5 books on the July 20 plot
//Hates solid table legs
///always keeps a pair of pliers in my map case

Not if I get to the beer first and I have a head start (only 2.5 hr train ride)

Mbwhahahahaha

Hitler had the luck of the devil. I read that he missed death by seconds many times throughout his life. In WWI, he heard a voice telling him to move while having dinner with his comrades while sitting in a shell hole near the front lines. He moved, and not 5 minutes later, a shell exploded in the same hole, killing everyone.
He also ran messages between general staff in WWI, and never got shot (literally running between bunkers while being shot at by Allied soldiers). He survived being gassed with Phosogene....Then he missed being killed in the beer hall putsche while others around him were shot dead. And another general assination attempt while on a speaking engagement in the 30's. A bomb planted in a podium where he was to speak, failed to detonate.
Makes you wonder doesn't it?

Having been a waitress at a German restaurant for a year, I have to say, that waitress receives my love and awe.

The most I could get was four liters in a hand

"Today on Heetler, ve are talking vith Hollywood hunk Christian Slater...

So Christian, they tell me in your next movie.......................ve get to see your butt"

"Yes that's right"

"Can ve see it right now?"

"Well.........I don't see why not"

"Oh god he's going to do it!"

(1) Nobody likes to talk about all the good things Hitler did.
(2) Nazis were some snappy dressers.
(3) Even Bush apologists have to admit-that Blitz thing kicked ass.
Talk about the original 'shock and awe...'

Well, if LaughingGremlin is successful in stealing my future bride's handfull of beer you may have a new stalker.

For 9 litres of beer, hell I'd marry her. (its legal here, afterall)

Our so-called Leaders kill we the people all the time with their stupid wars. Only seems fair that we should return the favor more often, IMO.

Yep, those Nazis had some snappy uniforms. I remember thinking how much cooler the uniform on my Nazi GI Joe was compared to all the rest. The Australian and Canadian ones looked ridiculous.

Hey Germany! Close only counts in horseshoes!
