How much do you want to bet that half, or more, of all the major companies that work in or with the USA, have similar plans on buying off politicians.

2004-07-18 02:45:10 PM
OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING!!!11ONE

/sarcasm off

Notice how it's all Repubbies getting named? Just proves that the Democratic party is the true party of the people, from which all goodness and life flows from.

2004-07-18 02:48:03 PM
Why is there only one allusion to the actual text of these e-mails?

Where's the smoking gun when you need it?

2004-07-18 02:49:21 PM
Here's to hoping this is the beginning of the end of that moran, Tom Delay.

2004-07-18 02:50:04 PM
How about we do this: throw all campaign money for a particular race into one big pot and divide it equally among the people running. Then you'll have to compete on using ideas rather than your bank account. Plus we'll get huge entertainment from the nutlogs who emerge from the woodwork to claim their share and mount a "campaign".

2004-07-18 02:50:31 PM
To take money out of politics, take politics out of money.

2004-07-18 02:54:13 PM
Meanwhile, the Democrats raise money haphazardly over the Internet from regular Joes and through small lists of more affluent private donors.

2004-07-18 02:54:31 PM
Well, duh.

Delay & Hutchinson both ought to be permanently exiled from Texas.

2004-07-18 02:54:35 PM
Yes! This confirms that only the Republicans are corrupt, and no Democrat ever has or ever would take money from questionable sources or solicit funding from inappropriate organizations.

/yeah

2004-07-18 02:55:35 PM
I'm sure this has nothing to do with the ongoing investigation of DeLay to see if he broke Texas election law as well by funneling money from corporations through the republican party, back into the state race (in order to push through the redistricting)...

NOTHING at all to do with that...

I suppose this puts the Bush adminstration's "privledged communication" during the energy meetings in a different light.

Surely there's nothing they would want to hide!

Is everyone still busy reading the headline?

So you're saying there might be a conflict of interest when an energy company that's skirting/breaking campaign laws by donating to a major leader of the party of the sitting president is allowed to help right energy policy, while simultaneously gouging another state for millions and cooking the books halfway to sunday?

//not saying the democrats never do it, but I don't think they've ever been this blatant

2004-07-18 03:07:47 PM
This is pretty sad as I watch my once beloved Republic part move further and further away from any ideals that I, myself, hold.

Will be voting Dem. in a presidential race for the first time ever (and bitterly too I might add).

Note: Not voting Dem over this article since, as of yet, it has nothing to do with the Chimp who co-opted my party...

Is this supposed to be a surprise to anyone?

2004-07-18 03:11:32 PM
Just another farking symptom of the capaign finance ills that farking plague this country.

When are we going to get a system that actually works? It seems to me that while the republican party gets to eat this particular crow, there are abuses on bothe sides of the line.

I guess all the Farkers are at church this fine Sunday afternoon...

Is it really that hard for these news outfits to include a link to the actual text of these memos?

/waiting for Smoking Gun to save the day.

2004-07-18 03:18:16 PM
And here I always thought that people just gave money to politicians out of the goodness of their heart and expected nothing in return. Because they believed in the political system.

2004-07-18 03:18:25 PM
Hi, I'm Canadian and therefore not sure exaclty how US. party financing works. Could someone explain? Why are companies and corporations allowed to donate?

Why not have a system like us where the party receives 1.50 for each vote is received the previous year?

2004-07-18 03:18:28 PM
Just further proof that it's time to toss some nooses over the lamp posts and clean that town up.

If I were in charge the corrupt businessmen, and the politicians who accepted bribes donations to help them, would enjoy the death penalty. It will be slow. Might take a couple weeks.

Wow, that's a pretty damn good idea... might actually allow third parties to grow bit by bit...
Of course, that would slow the flow of money to politicians, and take away opportunities for businesses to influence legislation... ahhh, that's why we don't have it...

In the US people can donate up to $2000 to a campaign for a person, and much larger sums to the national "party" system, which is not supposed to use that money for any particular campaign... ummm, and that's all I have...

2004-07-18 03:22:43 PM
What's to flame? I mean, we all know 99.9% (and I think I'm being kind) of politicians are corrupt asshats....

2004-07-18 03:23:44 PM
Democrats take $$$ from groups that work to better the lives of Americans...Teacher's, environmentalists, etc.

Republicans take $$$ from corrupt corporations whose aim is to rob American's blind, while polluting the planet....Enron, Halliburton, etc.

GOP = Suck it!

Um, yeah, right, Dems would never take money from the big-bad corporations....

Ken Lay wants a speedy trial, I wonder if that is so he can still get a pardon from Dubya even if Dubya gets voted out?

all republicans....interesting. i'll bet $10 bucks they all consider themselves christian too....

Wouldn't surprise me. In fact,I wouldn't be surprised if he just copped a plea, in order to ensure The Shrub could pardon him. Clinton-Like asshattery, all of it.

Republican For Kerry = Nation before Party.

That was pretty farking cool.

Ok first off anyone who takes the stance of "THEY DO IT TOO!" is a moron. This is such a childish stance on a serious issue that I feel like smacking both sides. Maybe you fools on the far right can move a little left and vise versa. Ill meet you in the middle for a real disscusion. Until then burn in your ignorence, burn.

Where's the smoking gun? It ended up in that big "shred" pile that happened AFTER the investigation began.

You are being sarcastic right? I can feel it from here. Republicans have a set of sleazy contituents, and the Democrats simply have a different set. And there is a union of those two sets in some surprising places.

Vote Dem if you want, support all their candidates and platforms if you need to, but please don't be blind to whats going on all around you. It just makes you look pitiful.

What ever happened to the republicans (or any POLITICIAN) for:

Small Central Government
State Rights
No interference with the market

Can I change how I'm registered?

I just checked several news sites to try and find the text of these memos. Unsurprisingly, the few sites that actually had the story had it buried off the front page. Even Google News didn't have it. I get the strong impression that the news outlets are going to try and let this story die, much like Trent Lott's comments on Strom Thurmond. Let's hope that, like that story, the blogs pick this up and keep it going. I know I'll be forwarding it to several people

It makes me a little nuts (and gives me little nuts) that some Farkers are so eager to paint members of any given political party with a broad, indiscriminate brush. Not every conservative is a republican, and not every republican is a Bushist. Likewise, there are plenty of liberals who ain't exactly hoping for an overnight in the Lincoln Bedroom of a Kerry White House.

So, cheers to Verdelak, and those like him, who vote their conscience, rather than their affiliation.

/me? ranting, lunatic, liberal, anti-Bushist and trial lawyer. I've been told I must hate America. I'll have to get on that...

2004-07-18 03:07:47 PM Verdelak what he said. and also like leathermidgit's Republican For Kerry = Nation before Party.

as much as i dislike the Dems historic tax and spend ways the rabid right has ruined my party. i don't know just how we let the fundies get control but they must be stopped and if that means 4 (or 8) years of kerry ok.

2004-07-18 03:57:35 PM
The real conservatives in the republican party (the ones who do support small government, states' rights, etc.) have long since been replaced by fundamentalist idealogues. I consider myself a conservative, but according to the republicans, I'm a god-hating, tree-hugging anarchist. The only place left for me is the libertarian party. That's something I'm not so crazy about, but they're better than the republicans or democrats.

2004-07-18 04:00:16 PM
Ah yes Jimmy, the early 21st century was a strange time. Why, I used to sit around outside at work while I was on call, and my favorite settin' spot got disturbed one time by a giant WHIRRRRRR noise. The noise went on for weeks and weeks- turns out it was a paper shredding truck. I went up and asked 'em, who you shreddin' all that paper for? The FBI office was way on the other side of town. "Arthur Andersen" they said. I says, "hey, they's a client of mine. They sure been sending a lot of packages to them there law firms." They said "hm". I said, yup, pretty fishy doin's. Well, they ain't a client o' mine no more. Yup. True Story.
