25 years ago, I was born in the "Sweatshirt Capital of the World." A few years later, we lost that title to some town in Indonesia.

I guess I could go over to China with a bottle of gin and make snarky comments until they get annoyed and just give up to get the obnoxious round eye the hell out of their country.

You know, if you'd think it would help.

Ft. Payne is north of my hometown. That article is almost entirely moot because most of those "generations of families'" offspring run around smoking meth and doing absolutly nothing with their lives while most of the factory work is done by Mexican workers who have taken over half of the town and mail the money back to Mexico. It wouldn't be good for the small handful of people that run the shops and even worse for the smaller handful of people that run the factories, but it's not really another loss for the bluecollar worker. This is the case in many areas of Alabama where factories have not completely shut down. Your average kid isn't happy working in a factory and, for some reason, the ones not smart enough for college decide the most viable option for a happy life is to become a crack head.
And for a packaged response to all of the people that are about to flame Alabama, it's a beautiful state with lots of great people there. My hometown is a very nice place also and I have a large extended family there. There are spots where ignorance is becoming the norm, however, and you see people running around doing some really stupid $#!t. I have been to many areas of the US and even overseas and I have yet to see a place or a race without their fair share of knuckleheads. I've seen alot more white trash in places besides AL actually. I will admit it can be boring if you aren't into fishing, hunting, boating, camping, bonfires, beer and country babes, but if that ain't your style of livin' I don't give a damn. And one more point, I have yet to go anywhere whatsoever that has better looking women than Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. The Southern Belles definatly have them all beat.

For our honeymoon my wife and I went to DeSoto State Park outside Ft. Payne. I knew about it because I went with my parents a decade earlier. It was a great place to visit and we ended up in the Sock Outlet, since we didn't want to go the the Alabama museum. I still have my $20 shoes, $1 socks, and $3 polo shirt. Good times.

Some day, Americans will have to decide if this is really a Nation " Of the people, By the People, and For the People", or merely a flag of convenience for stateless multinational corporations.

Dang. Go get 'em Spanky. I have to agree, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee do have the highest percentage of hot women. I have lived most of my life in north Alabama, and would be glad to live most of the rest of my life in this area. Roll motherfarkin Tide.

A few buttons, some yarn, and they could outsmart the Chinese by taking the lead as the sock puppet capital of the world:

Actually here's the official Alabama "Capital of the World" List:

Albertville, Alabama: Fire Hydrant capital of the world.
Dothan, Alabama: Peanut capital of the world
Fort Payne, Alabama: Sock capital of the world.
Opp, Alabama: Rattlesnake Capital of the World
Dothan, Alabama: Condom Capital of the World.
Scottsboro, Alabama: Unclaimed Luggage Capital of the World.

Holy crap...I am from Fort Payne.

What town are you from Spanky McCracken?

I agree with you mostly on the Meth/Foreign workers statemeny mostly. However, the older generation is stuck in the sock mills. My parents are both low-level supervisors. I wish Fort Payne would go wet and the sock mills would shut down. Seems to me like we'd have about 100 prime places to put breweries.

We have about 1500 Mexicans in a town of 12'000. I'm friends with a few of them. It seems to me as if the Mexican community here is starting to develop into something a bit more than just a remote place to work.

Alabama is a great place. Birmingham is all it's got if you want a big setting. It's developing a stronger music scene. I've always liked it here because if you ever get bored you have Atlanta, Chattanooga, Birmingham, Nashville. I couldn't imagine being born any place else. About ready to get out for awhile though. Desoto State Park is uber. There's a place called Hippy Hole down little river that is and will always be my favorite place on earth.

Let us sacrifice America's productive economy on the altar of global free trade.

Oh, and this one fits right in...

Eufala, Alabama: The Fishing Lure Capital of the World

Spanky McCracken: I've been to Ft. Payne many times-- mostly when I'm hiking around Little River Canyon and/or DeSoto Falls. It's a really beautiful area--I'd have no problem moving there if a job opened up. People are friendly, too. But the town does seem to be in danger of drying up, if no other industry springs up before the hosiery mills make a run for the border.

Besides, isn't the group Alabama from Ft. Payne?

I spent a few days in Fort Agony in the late eighties. It the place has gone downhill from then, it should be razed.

Hugh Jass, yes they are.

this is just in general.

what does it matter if the prices of consumer goods are kept down if nobody has any money to buy them because of unemployment?
2004-07-15 04:07:28 PM
I've got to chime in and agree that the southern women are the best looking in the world. I live in Birmingham and it's impossible to go anywhere without seeing a beautiful woman.

Also, Roll. Farking. Tide.

/knows nothing of these "socks" of which you speak

octavedoctor True, but loveliest girls are on the Plains. WDE!
2004-07-15 04:10:59 PM
I think the town's gotten better...We have a weird rich, poor gap because it's fairly evenly distributed...You have the Meth-heads, white trash, and sock mill workers here, and then the lawyers, doctors, and sock mill owners there.

The town is a Nazi on skateboarding. There is one church parkinglot. A lot of my friends have been given tickets or handcuffed for skating in safe areas.
2004-07-15 04:12:15 PM
Let's keep it up. We can turn this into a trade flamewar.

We've not had one of those in some while, there's been some generalized economic flamewars but not trade flamewars.

/agrees with you in that jobless consumers won't consume much of anything

Women everywhere are good-looking. Loud Jersey girls, sweet southern belles, cowgirls from the plains/Rockies, California girls, Midwest Catholic girls, I'll take them all, either singly on in pairs.

You mean the "Skateboarding is not a crime" stickers didn't protect them?
2004-07-15 04:18:18 PM
Roll Tide and War Eagle to my Alabama peeps, but the best-looking women in the world reside a little to the west, in Mississippi. I love me some Bama women, and I married one, but dang, there's something in the water over there.
