Hmmm, something is screaming "satire"!

Unfortunately, I don't really "get" Zimbabwe jokes.

Anyone want to explain if this is in reference to anything in particular?

2004-07-15 08:47:51 AM
Like hell they ban me, biatches!

2004-07-15 08:51:11 AM
The column is real. The writer seems to write most of his stories with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek. In other words: This is going to be a riot for those South African Farkers, otherwise it makes no sense.

Since this link was green lighted, does that mean it will be a light gray in Zimbabwe?

There seems to be some truth to it. I hit the editorials link on the left side, and sure enough, the article was an editorial, that started out with "if it wasn't so tragic, it would be amusing".

So, I did me a quick Google news search, and came up with these.

Mugabe bans red

Actually, what they tried to ban, was the wearing of red ribbons on TV. If you actually removed all those colors, you'd be staring at a black screen.

Personally, I would be more concerned with the introduction of ox-drawn ambulances
which sadly, seems to be true.

the best part is they themselves are colored..
they can, over time.. ban themselves from television.
this couldve used the ironic tag is done right.

Everytime I watch the WB, my TV is colored...

Mugabe is completely and utterly off his farking rocker. I feel truly sorry for the citizens of Zimbabwe.

Any truth to the rumor that these characters are going to be sporting retro "Rhodesia" jerseys in the Olympics?

2004-07-15 01:55:28 PM
Oooh...satire!

/guesses "amusing" tag fits

Oh yeah, afterthought -- I'm aware this article is Sah-tear-eh, but the "red" one isn't. Bloody lunatic.

Zimbabwe TV: Now brought to you in MONOCHOROMEVISION !!!!

2004-07-15 01:57:14 PM
"Is white in this spectrum of yours?" asked Solly. "Because if it is, we are probably going to remove it from our TV programmes, too."

So then, Zimbabwe television will pretty much consist of a black screen with audio commentary....we have something similar in the U.S.....it's called "radio".

Is this what M. Night Shama-lama-ding-dong based his new movie, "The Village," on?

/Just wondering...

2004-07-15 01:58:26 PM
I think there's a guy in the "4 Whites Only" thread who would enjoy this...

<No really, I'm OK now>

What an advanced and intelligent race of people.

2004-07-15 01:59:40 PM

Banning red on TV is one way to prevent the spread of Communism. And of Loverboy album covers.

Amazing pete, I thought I was the only one who called him that.

/I don't always get my jokes either. But they still make me laugh.

Robert Mugabe is currently in a competitive race with Thabo Mbeki and Joseph Kony to see who is the most insane African leader.

So far Joseph Kony is ahead by a mile, but the fact that Thabo Mbeki is the president of South Africa and denies that HIV causes AIDS puts him further up the ladder.

Isn't wit a reqirement of satire?

If not then anyone could write any old tosh and pass it off as satire...

"Man has landed on the Spoon." What? Oh it's satire...

"Clouds are made of puffy spunk, says scientist!" What? Oh it's satire...

"The aformentioned article contains ironic sarcasm and wit!" What? Wait. No it doesn't.

The sad thing is, this could be true. Mugabe is a complete and utter asshat.

But his Swiss bank accounts are probably quite full, so what does he care?

2004-07-15 02:09:25 PM
I think it's a great idea -- but why only ban the colours on TV?
Real life is also offensive.

"White is the colour of racism" = brilliant

Does anyone remember that book The Giver where there was a futuristic society with no color? Yeah.

2004-07-15 02:11:52 PM
Hmm, Zimbabwe History

White leadership = 'Breadbasket of Africa' economically/politically stable.
Black leadership = Starvation, genocide, totalarinism, ox drawn ambulances.

Which is more politically correct?

2004-07-15 02:13:41 PM
does anyone know the origin of the phrase "tongue in cheek"?

2004-07-15 02:15:31 PM
dookiehead409 I hated that book so much....

That just begs the question: exactly who wants to get lucky with a guy wearing binding pleather pants? Apparently times have changed since the early 80's.

Tongue In Cheek

The commonly told tale about this phrase is that it derives from the acting practice of thrusting one's tongue into your cheek to keep from laughing at an inappropriate moment. There is no evidence to support this story or the idea that the phrase originates in the theater.

The phrase dates to 1748 when it was fashionable to signal contempt for someone by making a bulge in your cheek with your tongue. By 1842 the phrase had acquired its modern, ironic sense.

SirOblivion, to blame it on race is silly. Does the name Nelson Mandella ring a bell?
This guy is just an asshat, the white guys who ruled were pretty much asshats to.

I regret to inform everyone that due to this article, Mr. Solly has been let go from his position. There will be no further broadcasting of any kind in Zimbabwe until he is replaced.

Fortunately, Mr. Solly has already begun negotiations with the FCC to take an senior position in their enforement department.

Solly was quoted as saying, "I am overjoyed that I will be able to continue the strive to purify the airwaves as seen fit by my new exalted ruler. I feel I am a shoe-in for this title, and have found that the rhetoric and moral leanings of my new exalted ruler are very much in synch with that of the great Mugabe."

Strange how Rhodesia - I mean "Zimbabwe" has gone totally down the pan since the evil white man stopped running it...

I'm never sure what did in Africa the most - intertribal warfare, the introduction of the Muslim faith, Europian colonialism, or white/black racism.

If the modern world hadn't bothered with Africa, I'm pretty sure that sub-Saharan Africa (no way could the northern shore avoid Europe) would have remained content living at a subsistance level and using spears on each other once in a while. Thanks to the rest of the world, they have gunpowder and additional justifications for slaughter.

Now, in a climate of unresolved hate and ignorance, we have the world's largest attempt to breed AIDS-resistant people.

I don't suppose someone with a better knowledge of the continent than I would care to share an example of a peaceful and prosperous African nation?
