"Well, number one, there are a lot of sex offenders in the area," said Hartwell resident Stanley Jackson. "They're all over the place. I have small kids, and it's scary."

What, do you think they weren't there until they registered? They've always been "all over the place." It's just that now there's a publicly accessible list to scare everyone.

Can't we just give them a whole city... say, Cincinnati, for example?

2004-07-09 09:31:26 AM
I say we just give them Texas...

/don't mess with kids

Effect!

Not Affect!

2004-07-09 09:36:12 AM
ThatDevGuy 'affect' is actually correct here.

effect: Something brought about by a cause or agent; a result.

affect: To have an influence on or effect a change in

why can't we just lock 'em up and throw away the key?

Fromunda...

Because that's not "fair".. Like ya know... it's not their fault they fark little kids..

/forget locking them up... just behead them in the streets.

No thanks, JacksBlack we have enough going on in Cincy what with the racism and all. If we started importing sex offenders we'd never be out of the news.

2004-07-09 09:51:30 AM
Do you say that often, GaidinBDJ?

2004-07-09 09:59:13 AM
And in other news the sky is blue, bears poop in the wood, and Weird Al's Parents are dead.

I like the fact the headline cares more about the financial aspect of having sex offenders around, than having sex offenders around.

2004-07-09 10:01:22 AM
crikey, checked my area using the links that article provided, and there's a registered sex offender living on the street next to mine. And I have a 3 year old.

Never seen him, tho. That's a good thing.

2004-07-09 10:02:24 AM
There's really no good way to fix this problem. Any solution is going to have a Catch 22.

Note to self: don't buy a home in Ohio or Kentucky.

2004-07-09 10:12:18 AM
I say pick out a part of town nobody wants, put a high wall around it, and put all the undesirables, the homeless stinking filthy drunks, the druggies, and the sex offenders inside. you might have to guard the entrance and use sentries.

then the rest of the population can live their lives in peace and freedom.

Don't forget to decorate the outside of the walls something decorative too, murals that fit the neighborhood, nice art of whales and oceans and stuff.

2004-07-09 10:16:49 AM
Note to self: don't buy a home in Ohio or Kentucky.

because Ohio and Kentucky are the only states that have sex offenders, of course.

no wonder houses are so cheap in Clermont County.

2004-07-09 10:29:02 AM

"bailiff! whack his pee - pee!"

The Big Ern
No, but they both have a warning when buying a house to check the sex offender registry. Then, if the results don't agree with the potential buyer, they can get out of the contract. It would make it very difficult to sell my house if a lot of registered sex offenders lived near by.

I'm guessing that you didn't actually thoroughly read the article though & probably live in either OH or KY, feeling the need to defend it tooth and nail. *checks profile* Well, whadda ya know?

stevarooni: Yes, very often.

2004-07-09 10:34:07 AM
There are over 30 registered sex offenders living in the zip code for Hartwell

And probably 5,000-15,000 non-sex offenders living there. Isn't that about the statistical average? But no no, let's scare ourselves to death, it's more fun that way.

I have mixed feelings on the whole "sex offender registry" thing. On one hand, it does make people aware of those in their neighborhoods with a shady past. On the other, that could just increase paranoia, fear, and hate.

Also, a large number of the people on the registry don't have quite so dark of a past. I was surprised to recently find that my father is on the list. 26 years ago, when his first wife divorced him, she submitted "evidence" in the form of candid bathtub photos of their 1 year-old son to the judge. He was charged with a misdemeanor, but since then he has had to go into court and register as a sex offender once a year for the rest of his life. From what I understand, this kind of thing applies to a good percentage of the people on the registry.

I'm not saying that the registry is a bad thing, mind you. I just wonder if there might be a better way.

Why don't the parents just watch their kids, or tell them, "now kids playing with Father Smith next door is not a good idea"? People are just too scared of everything.

Where are all the female sex offenders.

Female sex offenders are easy.

/ hot for teacher

2004-07-09 01:05:45 PM
Female sex offenders are also usually 300+ pounds. At least they were when I searched on those nifty online forms.

2004-07-09 02:26:39 PM
well deserving of the obvious tag

2004-07-09 02:27:32 PM
Eight year olds, dude.

2004-07-09 02:28:10 PM
yeah, the female sex offenders who are not 300+ pounds are not sex offenders.

2004-07-09 02:29:34 PM
ROTFL, You just cant wright stuff funnier than that.

2004-07-09 02:29:58 PM

"Well, in accordance with 'Megan's Law,' I'm required to tell you . . . aw, sure they can stay!"

2004-07-09 02:33:36 PM
not all female sex offenders are 300lbs

look at the teacher that was banging the 14 y/o old boy that was on Fark just last week

Anyone notice the google supplied banner ad at the top? Why in the world would you pay someone 19.95 a year to get a list of sex offenders in your area when the information is publicly available online?

2004-07-09 02:38:14 PM

Pooter: that is really unfair. Almost everyones parents take pics like that so they can embarrass you in front of future dates.

Real child molesters should just be killed, or castrated. or both.

Sex offenders in Ohio and Kentucky? Whoda thought! (no offense Drew)

2004-07-09 02:39:58 PM
The really bad part about this kinda thing is that the sex offenders do not have any rules as to where they can move (other than near schools normally) and there is nothing that can be done once they have moved into an area.

I think that if you are a sex offender you get the maximum penality for the crime with NO parole and when you get out if you do it again we put a bullet in your skull. that way these lists would be a lot less necessary. But then again one of my favorite sayings is ... "I got a rope and I got a truck" (not in a racist way in an anti criminal way)

2004-07-09 02:42:39 PM
There is 334 registered sex offenders in my city, 213 are listed as living in the State Penn.

2004-07-09 02:44:32 PM
I can't wait to read the threads on fark after Karla Homolka gets her statutory release on July 5, 2005.

2004-07-09 02:45:31 PM
Actually, why isn't there a "Violent Offenders" registry as well? I wouldn't mind knowing if the dude down the street once robbed a 7-11 at gunpoint. As long as we're into punishing people after their prison sentences are over with...

2004-07-09 02:47:19 PM
Creepy story - DC residents probably recall the sex offender who ran off to Guatemala a few weeks ago (he was from Arlington Co. and rumored to have molested 300 boys at one point). Anyway, my gf's boss was set up on a blind date with him that was supposed to be a few days after he was arrested. This woman saw him on the news and freaked (obviously). Nothing like finding out your friends set up you with a child rapist.

2004-07-09 02:47:42 PM
Yeah, they keep bidding up the price on my kid sister. Jerks.

2004-07-09 02:53:42 PM
So I guess if you are childless and plan to remain so this might be a good way to save on a house.

Jean Valjean surrenders -- and not just because he's French.

2004-07-09 02:55:43 PM
Just a little note for anyone who lives around South Dakota and the surrounding areas: the prison system there is so messed up that they're actually paroling offenders even when they don't have anywhere definate to go.

"You haven't been accepted at a halfway house? Nobody in your family will let you stay with them? Oh well, hopefully you'll find somewhere to go! See ya!"

2004-07-09 02:56:35 PM
this thread made me look up sex offenders in my city and nearby area, and I found a lot of them. Nobody familiar though. Most of them on the list do look creepy but some are not.

somebody correct me if I'm wrong, I read in a thread long time ago that if your psycho GF/SO filed a complain on you that you rape her, even if it's a lie and not proven is that you still be in the sex offender list and have to register on city that you live.

2004-07-09 02:57:23 PM
Why is it that `sex offenders' have to register, but those guilty of other crimes like mugging people, robbing banks, bulglary, selling drugs or killing people do not?

I wonder how many people find themselves the target of vigilantes due to being on the sexual offenders list. I'm pretty sure it's a non-zero number. And certainly, it's going to screw up the rest of your life.

Since only one class of crime (sex-related) has this penalty, I'd say that it qualifies as `cruel and unusual punishment. Certainly, it's unusual, and certainly it's cruel to punish somebody for the rest of their life, even though their `debt to society' has long since been paid.

Looks like there's 15 people registered as sex offenders in my zip code. 78749. I wonder how high the number would have to get to before the neighborhood associations started rolling into action. Knowing them, the figure is probably `1'.

registerd in lubbock...insert your own joke.

2004-07-09 03:08:04 PM
How, exactly, does one affect property values? Does one go around saying, "I'm worth $500,000 right now! Really! Watch me go up!"

What? You don't think the entire country should be made into a big McDonalds Playland just because people are too farking lazy to keep an eye on their spawn???

---

Sownow - you're an idiot.

---

Registries like this constitute double punishment for the same crime, and in some cases, an even harsher punishment for innocent (or at least not particularly bad) people after they've "done their time" than they got when they were officially being punished. I wonder if anyone has ever done a study to see how many "new" (i.e. non-registered) sex-offenders (for example) appear for every one that _is_ on a list somewhere? My guess is that these lists are a waste of time in terms of really protecting anybody, and only serve to permanently ostracize people who've made mistakes in the past.
