Outstanding headline.

You are in a maze of twisty passages, all alike

2004-07-08 07:11:50 PM
Sorry Teekno.

The twisty passages were from Adventure, aka Colossal Caves. Not Zork. [At least, none of the real Zorks, the post-Infocom graphical abominations don't count.]

Just my .02 Zorkmids.

Apparently these guys had dungeons and everything. Nasty terrorists.

http://www.csd.uwo.ca/Infocom/Articles/NZT/nzt1.html

Thanks for all the colossal cave and dungeon references guys. It really brings back the memories.

Oh and the babel fish ref from hitchhikers was cool too.

2004-07-08 10:26:28 PM
Don't need to get an Apple ][ emu, you can d/l all the text based Zork adventures from a few different web sites. Just google it.

I wish they'd put up the HHGTG, damn babblefish always going down the drain.

West of House
You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door.
There is a small mailbox here.

>open mailbox
Opening the mailbox reveals a leaflet.

>read leaflet
What leaflet?

>get leaflet from mailbox
Ok.

>read leaflet
The leaflet reads:

"In the name of Allah, exterminate the Zionist pig dogs in the house west of field!"

>wear suicide vest
Ok.

No need to fire up the old computer play Zork on-line here. http://thcnet.net/error/index.php

It is a bit slow but then the original was a bit slow on my old box.

Thanks, Guy Incognito for bringing back loads of 7th-grade computing horrors. My mom had a Performa 475, and that machine stunk. Wasn't nearly as bad as adminning a lab full of Centris 610s. Put me off of Apple hardware for years.

Until you've dealt with the Tandy 1000, you don't know real pain...

2004-07-08 10:29:52 PM
WTF is a grue? GIS for that word returns a bunch of construction equipment/cranes.

Performa 475 was a POS (for that late day) 040 machine that Apple tried to foist onto consumers, IIRC, when it was patently obvious that the next wave was going to be 601/603 processors.

Centris machines were made gruesome by some crappy, useless sound card that disliked most software, IIRC.

Thanks, Mr. Scully. Have you returned to your core competency, selling sugar water?

WTF is a grue?

As transcribed from the Encyclodpaedia Frobozzica, a compilation of all things from the Great Underground Empire, also known as "Zork":

The grue is a sinister, lurking presence in the dark places of the earth. Its favorite diet is either adventurers or enchanters, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its horrible fear of light. No grues have ever been seen by the light of day, and only a few have been observed in their underground lairs. Of those who have seen grues, few ever survived their fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

Grues have sharp claws and fangs, and an uncontrollable tendency to slaver and gurgle. They are certainly the most evil-tempered of all creatures; to say they are touchy is a dangerous understatement. "Sour as a grue" is a common expression, even among themselves

2004-07-08 10:34:11 PM
funny hitchhiker references guys. i loved that game.

2004-07-08 10:34:51 PM
Okay... I just read the article. The guys sold some stuff to some people. I still don't get the grue reference.

2004-07-08 10:36:49 PM
Fnord

While I don't know whether they originally were found in Adventure or not, I do know that Zork I: The Great Underground Empire had a maze of twisty passages, all alike. I spent far too long on that damn maze as a kid.

Four words:

Leather Goddesses of Phobos.

Alexis: A company named Infocom made alot of old Text-based games including Zork. A Grue was a monster from Zork that lurked in the darkness.
