I didn't know a non-profit, tax-exempt entity could go bankrupt

2004-07-08 11:41:23 AM
Religon is a tough business.

2004-07-08 11:42:20 AM
Great headline!

2004-07-08 11:42:45 AM
Let's hope this is another "beginning of the end".

Possibly one of the best headlines ever.

2004-07-08 11:42:56 AM
Good headline, old news. Nothing to see here...

Sounds like that church took it in the butt

2004-07-08 11:43:22 AM
ah yes, Catholicism....The religion of peace...of pubescent ass.

2004-07-08 11:43:37 AM
Not that many will really get this, but maybe they and CrossGen can get together and weep a while.

/is about as concerned for the Vatican as she is for Mark Alessi.

A friend of mine just got back from Vatican City. Huge marble sculptures, famous paintings, everything gold....

if that Pope ain't pimpin', I don't know who is...

2004-07-08 11:44:42 AM
fark that, they shouldn't be allowed. They're just using this to duck out of the lawsuits.

The farking Church has billions of dollars.

Tax churches, that way, WE won't have to be taxed as much. Ever major religion is the same as Big Business.

2004-07-08 11:44:53 AM
Just to be accurate, its only one Archdiocese that filed for bankrupcy.

I think its the 2nd or 3rd one. There are hundreds of Archdioceses.

2004-07-08 11:45:26 AM
I hope the popemobile is put on the auction block. Hell, I'll bid extra if the pope is included.

2004-07-08 11:45:58 AM
They deserve to lose their asses for the way they handled the hole pedo priest thing. Now if only we could sue them for farking up mass I'd be happy.

/Catholic, pissed off at the stupidity of those in charge.

2004-07-08 11:46:24 AM
Shame that even if the entire "religion" went away, it wouldn't automatically turn all of the sheep (I've always found it funny that "followers" are specifically referred to as sheep, and they eat it right up) into free thinkers.

Just goes to show - the majority of the planet deperately wants and needs to be told what to do, what is right and what is wrong.

/King for just one day

I blame WalMart and their constant price cutting of dogma ...

/more nothin'

2004-07-08 11:46:44 AM
Well, it's not THE Catholic Church, it's a church which happns to be Catholic.

I cringe slightly at the phrase "morally bankrupt." I don't like all of us Catholics being tarred with the same brush.

2004-07-08 11:46:56 AM
So you mean the "deposits" into "alter-boy" type accounts wern't enough?

2004-07-08 11:47:07 AM
Smookyfufu

I do agree with your 2nd point. I never understood why churches aren't taxed.

How would that undermine separation of church and state?

The whole point is that the church can't govern, and the government can't tell you what church to go to, etc.

Taxes are still taxes. Churches are businesses.

2004-07-08 11:48:07 AM
This is asinine. Why doesn't the damn Vatican just sell a painting or two and pay what they owe?

Out-of-context quote of the day:

"The bishop hasn't begun to touch his pot. He is lying," Slader said.

/disturbing in so many ways

Has anyone really explored the question as to why the Catholic Church became (or always had been) such a haven for boy-touchers? I mean, does the church just attract this type of people into the priesthood, or might it be the sexual represive attitudes of the church that could have led to something like this?

2004-07-08 11:49:11 AM
Yeah, its a good headline until you realize its a blatant Family Guy jacking. Not even a good jacking at that.

I cringe slightly at the phrase "morally bankrupt." I don't like all of us Catholics being tarred with the same brush.

If it helps any, I don't consider most Catholics morally bankrupt. I reserve that judgement for the church itself, as I do for most organized religious institutions.

I love it when submitters to fark, which regularily features sex, drugs, and most other vices, talks about someone ELSE being morally bankrupt. Keep it up, morans.

2004-07-08 11:50:42 AM
I think they should change the priest robe color to pink

2004-07-08 11:50:58 AM
Is that the verse where Jesus says to pay to Caeser what is Caesar's?

Church, heal thyself.

2004-07-08 11:51:33 AM
Kudos to the headline writer.

LeftyLiebowitz:

There's a show airing on HBO occasionally - I caught it a couple nights ago. I think it's a BBC production, but it's called 'Celibacy' IIRC and it questions exactly that. Why the Catholic Church has so many problems with sexual health.

It was actually a really interesting show.

2004-07-08 11:53:29 AM
You know, I just found out that a priest at my old church was diddling little kids and they paid the family across the street from where I grew up $600,000 to hush up. Before, the whole pedophile priest thing was something far away and I was just angry about it. Now, I want to crush the Catholic Church for the wrongs it has done. I want to grind it into the ground and let it die out.

2004-07-08 11:53:55 AM
You guys are so biased against Catholics. If this were any other religion, every hippie on the block would denounce the headline writer's insensitivity and failure to take into account the millions of good deeds the Catholic church undertakes yearly.

How can they file for bankrupcy? They have more money than God.

Doesn't matter, the Catholic Church has more money than God.

I believe its because of the celibacy vows that Priests have to take...

Or, they're just predators and know they'll be around children all the time. Who knows.

It's painful for me to remember.
