A few years back this happened up here at the University of Minnesota, except the bum melted our fiber dropping the internet connection to the U.

They think it might have been a homeless guy that started this doosy in my neighborhood yesterday. It wasn't just a produce warehouse, half of the building was the coolest night club Portland ever had...the Monte Carlo.

I think it's soft-g, but that might be my natural inclination after my 2nd maritni. *burg* Pass the gin!!

2002-01-21 07:54:45 PM
Soft g...at least that the way I'm pronouncing it.

You know, Ouroborus, that the natives in your area use a hard g. And they say Burn it instead of Bur net, and Lake Buckannon instead of.....

.......sorry, I have a particularly unpleasant task I'm avoiding right now.....

2002-01-21 08:07:15 PM

Doh! I meant hard "g" (got the two confused).

A brief guide to speakin' rite in Austin: Burnet is pronounced: burn-it; Koenig is: kay-nig; Manchaca is: man-shack; Guadalupe is: gwad-a-loop when referring to the street but gwad-a-loop-ay when talking about the river.

2002-01-21 08:15:27 PM
My presonal favorite is the Pedernales River. It's not pronounced "ped-er-nal-es" it's pronounced "per-den-al-es"

2002-01-21 08:17:28 PM
Ahem... Testing... is this thing on... Thanks.

THERE IS NO MENTION OF A BUM IN THE ARTICLE! WHAT IS GOING ON HERE!

Is someone going to check the veracity of these headlines? Ever? Maybe a little? I'll do it if you get in contact with me.

January 21, 2002 - Elgin police say a fire that damaged about 10,000 telephone and cable lines Sunday is suspicious. And repair crews say it might take days to get all the phone service restored.

The fire broke out yesterday morning under the Kimball Street Bridge in downtown Elgin and damaged at least three pipelines that carry the phone and cable wires.

A spokesman for SBC Ameritech says crews are working around the clock to restore service.

Curious: social inertia is one of the hardest things to overcome.

2002-01-21 10:02:58 PM
whenever I call ameritech it takes them at least 6 days to do anything, I think someone just wanted faster service.

2002-01-21 10:54:38 PM
Would that be in-ur-shuh or eye-nur-tee-uh?
I've never heard of social inertia before.
Thanks, Ouro!

Fred Flinstone:

As someone else said, I might be a "pecker-knuckles asshole" (I'm rather hoping they were talking about the erstwhile bum) but really, there's nothing about a bum in the article. Or the title: "Phone service may take days to restore after fire in Elgin". Really, not trying to be a dick, I mean it, I'm just hoping that somehow more accuracy in the headlines might show up. There's nothing about a bum on the page. I checked before I ranted.

Oh well. Guess it was pointless.
